Part 14
After questioning, Maan was released by Inspector Pandey on the promise that he would not leave town until the case was investigated fully. He was also warned about contacting the Handas especially Geet. Maan went back to his guesthouse alone. He needed to get in touch with Geet but how? And he would need to be careful, otherwise Pandey would definitely arrest him!
Based on her experience of similar cases, Ms Roy, thought this was a case of blackmail. The Handas were trapping Maan, but for what? "What do they want? Money? Land?" Ms Roy thought. She decided to contact Mr Singh, counsel for the Handas, to see whether they had any demands. Depending on the demand, it may be worthwhile giving in, to see this case and accusation go away. Once the case was resolved, Ms Roy would be the hero, so to speak. "Maybe, Maan would notice me then?" she thought dreamily. Ms Roy was about the same age as Maan and had known him for a few years now. She originally met him, while defending Dev in a divorce case, where he was cited as the 'other man'. Maan had accompanied Dev on his first visit to her law firm. She fell in love or lust with him, the first time she laid eyes on him. He on the other hand, didn't seem to notice her. Once she won the case, she decided to shift from civil law to corporate law, so that she could work with Khurana Constructions to get close to Maan. Despite her efforts, he still only saw her as a company lawyer rather than a friend. "He doesn't even know my first name. Let me win this case, and then Maan will know my name...I'll make sure of it", she thought.
Naintara and Dev were sitting in their chauffeur driven car leaving HP. They had dispatched his mother Pammi to Canada the night before. Naintara poured some champagne into 2 glasses and handed one to Dev. The clinked their glasses together. "Cheers. We may not have got Geet's land, but we have managed to tie Maan up in this legal mess, that I don't think even he will be able to get out of.." saying this, Naintara sipped her champagne. Dev looked tense. "But Maan has good lawyers..." Naintara looked at him indulgently "Dev, even if he does have good lawyers and manages to get the case dismissed, the Handas will not spare him alive...remember this involves their girl's reputation. All we have to do now is wait. !..All his property will be ours as his surviving relatives, other than Daadi. Finally we have the last laugh Maan" she toasted Maan and took another sip of champagne. Dev, was not convinced, but decided that it was best to stay quiet.
Rajji was tense. She clutched the letter in her hand and was crying uncontrollably. "What should I do? I have to do something. I need to get help. Who should I talk to? Mumma and Taiyji will only tell Brij veerji and Brij veerji will kill me. Hai babaji, what will I do now?" she thought hopelessly.
Maan was walking up and down the hallway in his guesthouse trying to think of what to do. It was not that he didn't trust Ms Roy, she was more than capable of doing her job. But he should be fixing this mess. He should be finding a solution. He felt helpless. He decided to pour himself a drink. Maybe that would help him relax a bit. He opened the bottle and was about to pour some scotch into a glass, when he heard a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" he called out. There was no answer. He left the bottle and went to the door. Opening it, he saw a girl whose face was not visible because there as a dupatta covering her head. "Who are you and what do you want?" asked Maan. Without answering, the girl pushed her way hurriedly past Maan and shut the door. Maan looked at her shocked.
