Part 10
Maan rang the doorbell and Brij opened the door. What a coincidence! Brij had been on his way out to find Maan, to invite him to the wedding, and here was Maan standing on his doorstep. God was definitely looking down on Brij, or so he thought.
Sweetly Brij said, "MaanJi, you have such a long life. I was just thinking about you and you appeared before me". Maan looked at him in amazement and smirked. "Brij is to something, but what?" he thought. "Be careful Maan".
"So MaanJi, come in, come in. Have a seat. Will you have something to drink? Rajji, oi Rajji ki bacchii. Get MaanJi something cold to drink", Brij said without pausing or giving Maan an opportunity to respond!
"No, no I am fine. Please Brij, I am here to meet Mohan Lal Handa. Could you call him for me? I have an appointment."
"Daarji, you want to see Daarji? But what about?" Brij asked nervously.
"I would like to have my discussion with him directly if possible. Please would you call him?" Brij anxiously left to find Daarji, wondering what work Maan had with Daarji. Was her here to blackmail them about Geet?
In the meantime, Rajji came with a cold drink. She bent down to put the drink on the table in front of him. It was at that point Rajji looked at Maan. She was mesmerised. She had never seen anyone so good looking this close to her. She giggled nervously at him and then left hurriedly to sit back down with the girls and Geet. Raji went close to Geet and whispered in her ear." I have seen the man who saved you. You didn't tell me he was very handsome. I nearly fainted seeing him". Geet looked at Rajji and whispered a bit louder than she thought, "Maan?" She hadn't realised that just at that moment the mehndi wali had asked her, her groom's name...
"Mr Handa.."
"Puttar, call me Daarji. Everyone in the village calls me Daarji"
"Daarji.."
"Puttar, will you have something to drink? Eat something maybe? This is the 1st time you have come to our house, so you cannot refuse our hospitality. Rajji, bring some snacks for Maan"
"Daarji, no need for this. Actually, I am here because..."
"Puttar, I have to say thank you to you for looking after Geet last night. She is a very silly girl who gets herself into bad situations. But she will soon be married and someone else's responsibility"
"Daarji, no need to thank me. Actually..."
"Puttar, as you have done us a great favour by looking after Geet, I insist you attend Geet's wedding. I will not take 'No' for answer". Daarji thought this was an ideal opportunity to invite Maan to the wedding, since they had already promised Dev and Naintara he would be there.
"Daarji, I will see...I am actually here..."
"Ah, here is Rajji with some snacks. She is Geet's younger sister. Once Geet is married, she is next in line"
Rajji again nervously giggled looking at Maan again. Rajji ran off, embarrassed, trying not to fall in the process. Had she heard correctly? "Was Daarji trying to suggest that Maan marry me? Hai Babaji, meri life banjayegi" she thought.
Maan thought "she is a very strange and silly girl. Do the Handas breed silly girls for a living? And do the Handas have the monopoly on talking? Do they ever let anyone speak? I need to take the opportunity and speak before I am interuppted again" .
"Daarji, I am here to talk about some land near the old GT road that I would like to buy from you for a hotel that I am building". Maan rushed the sentence out in one breath to avoid being interrupted again. Brij who had been listening silently heaved a sigh of relief. Maan's visit had nothing to do with Geet!
Rajji rushed to Geet's side. "Geet, Maanji is talking to Daarji...I think Daarji is trying to fix my marriage to him. Hai, kina sona munda..." Geet looked at Rajji with a shocked expression. She couldn't understand why this bit of information about Maan was upsetting her, but it was. Geet quickly got up with the excuse of going to the washroom. She decided to take the long route to get to the washroom...just past the room in which Daarji and Maan were having their meeting. She needed to find out whether Rajji was right. Was Daarji talking to Maan about marriage? Why should it bother her, if he was? How did it involve her? Why was she feeling disturbed? Should she not be happy for Rajji? She was too confused to rationalise all these thoughts in her head, but she decided she needed to know whether they were discussing marriage.
Maan heard the sound of payal and noticed Geet walking by, in her dark green lengha. She looked stunning-very different from the drowned rat yesterday or even the innocent village girl of the morning. He felt inside his pocket and found the payal. "Geet" he called out authoritatively. Geet stopped walking suddenly and Daarji and Brij turned toward Geet. Geet looked shocked and Brij started getting angry at Geet for stopping, but before he could say something, Maan went towards Geet. "Here is your payal. I found it in the tent". Geet's hand moved forward to touch the payal, and maybe his hand, but she remembered the mehndi in her hands and showing her wet hands, shook her head in refusal. Maan nodded, put it on the side table and sat back down facing Daarji. They continued their conversation, as Geet ran to the washroom. Her heart was beating rapidly and she could not explain to herself why.
Daarji and Maan had come to an agreement over the land. Daarji wouldn't sell the land to Maan, since he didn't own it. Geet would the rightful owner of the land once married. Nevertheless, Daarji was able to agree to lease it to Maan for 40 years. However, once Geet was married Maan would have the option to discuss the issue with Geet's husband who may be willing to renegotiate. It was not ideal for Maan, and quite risky, but he needed the land at this moment, so he agreed.
Maan got up to leave and said "Daarji, I will get my lawyer to draw up the agreement and send it to you tomorrow". Escorting Maan to the door, Daarji took a promise from Maan to attend the wedding.
"Puttarji you not only saved our Geet, but he was now you are our business associate. I will not take No for an answer. If you do not come, then I will not sign any deal with you" Daarji stated.
Maan had no choice but to agree to attend the wedding. It would be an opportunity to see Geet again, Maan thought. Then he remembered, she was the bride!
