Part 22
Before sitting in the car, Maan called Ms Roy over. She beamed at him as she approached him. Finally he had noticed her, she thought. Her happy thoughts were soon dampened when Maan told her not to forget to submit the marriage certificate to the court in Amritsar, after which he dismissed her. She thought of ripping up the certificate as the cars drove away, but thought better of it, since she knew of Maan's anger.
Geet sat in the back of the car with Maan. Suddenly she felt very shy and anxious sitting beside Maan, who was her husband now. Before the ceremony, she would have happily chewed his ear off with her non-stop chatter, but now things were different. She couldn't behave the way she did before or could she? She sat thinking about this while chewing her lip and creasing her forehead. Maan looked at his wife. "How funny does that word, wife, sound? After Sam, I never thought I would marry to have a wife, and today I have one, without planning for one!" he thought. "At least Daadi will be off my case now!"
Neither spoke to each other, but stayed lost in their own thoughts until they reached Handa Haveli. Maan got out of the car first, and held his hand out to help Geet. Geet was hesitant at first to accept his hand, but decided to extend her hand for him to take. As he took her right hand in his, his gaze fell on her henna adorned palm. He noticed the letters, M A A and N, and smiled. Geet saw him smiling and followed his gaze to her palm. He was looking at his name and she blushed at the thought. "He has found his name already Babaji...ab raat ko kya hoga" and she suddenly felt quite light-headed. Rajji had noticed Geet blushing and started teasing her mercilessly. "Didi, kya hua? Jiju ka haat nahi chorna?" Everyone started laughing which made Geet blush more, if that was possible. She quickly got out of the car and let go of Maan's hand. As she walked towards the haveli, Maan's gaze again fell onto her outfit. "When I get a chance, I need to find out why she is wearing this...this...mess" he reminded himself mentally.
They were welcomed into Handa Haveli by Rano who conducted aarti at the door. Once inside the hall, both were seated side-by-side. After taking refreshments, the traditional games and further teasing of the newly-wed couple began. Once evening approached, dinner was served. The Handas spared no expense on the lavish spread and dishes from all continents were served to impress their new damaad. The way they behaved with Maan now was with full respect as if the case they filed against him had never existed. During dinner, Geet made a mental note of all his eating habits, noticing that he hated spicy food and preferred the bland continental foods. "Hey Babaji, will I ever eat my chat-pata food again? I better make the most of it now...this may be my last good meal for a long time" she thought looking skyward.
Once dinner was finished, Geet was led up to her bedroom. It was decorated with bouquets of flowers and scented tea-lights. Rose petals adorned the bed and there was a canopy of flowers hanging from the ceiling over the bed. Geet felt her heart race as she thought of what would/ could happen tonight. "Will he ask me whether I am ready for this relationship or will he expect me to submit?" she wondered. She felt her mother and Taiyji lead her to the bed. They sat her down in the centre and covered her face with her dupatta. "Now wait here until Maanji comes...and don't uncover your face yourself. That is Maanji's job" Rano giggled. As Rano and Taiyji left, Taiyji tuned back and said "Remember your place, Geet. You are a wife now, and your job is to obey your husband". They left and closed the door. Geet sat on the bed, thinking, not only had they closed the physical door, but they had closed the door of choice for her. She should only obey...
Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of the door opening and closing again. "God, your sister Rajji, is such a cut-throat business woman. It is a good thing I am rich, otherwise she would never have let me in" Maan said light heartedly. When he received no response, he looked at the figure sitting nervously on the bed. He noticed she was nervous, by the fact that she was shivering.
"Geet, it's quite late and we are both quite tired. Why don't you go and change your clothes? By the way, where is the lengha that I ordered for you?"
"Jee? This is the lengha."
"No, it's not. The lengha I ordered matches this sherwaani. Also, this multi-coloured mess, is not my style"
"Thank God!" Geet said out-loud, thinking about his style choice.
"What do you mean?" Maan asked as he was puzzled by her response and as he couldn't see her face, he was unsure of why she responded in this way.
"Thank God, this was not your choice. Otherwise, I was thinking you have very bad taste" Geet said, without thinking. Realising what she said, she quickly added "I mean, I thought that you had very unique style sense"
Her response made Maan chuckle."From your response, I assume, you didn't choose the lengha. So where did it come from?" Maan asked.
"Ms Roy brought it" Geet stated matter-of-factly.
"Really? Then there must have been a mix up at the shop. I will check up with the designer, when he requests his payment." In Maan's mind, Ms Roy was an utmost professional, so the outfit mix-up could have nothing to do with her.
"Geet, please go and change. Your outfit is giving me a headache" Maan joked.
"I can't. Mamma, said that you have to lift up my dupatta and I cannot change if my dupatta is covering me" Geet pouted.
"Fine. I will lift your dupatta." Saying so, Maan approached the bed and lifted the dupatta off her face. As he did, his dark brown eyes met her hazel ones...
