OS 2: Finding Khushi

Part 9

Khushi walked home in the dark after a hectic day entering data about cereals and their purchase and supply. Her head ached. How many kinds of dal could man eat?

Rubbing the back of her neck, Khushi walked on, lightly kicking a few dry leaves flying on to her path in the wind.

The skin of her neck pricked. She rubbed it, frowning. How could he be anywhere here? He would be either at his home or the office, barking into his phone at poor Amanji.

"Khushiji! Finished your work only now?", asked a cheerful Happy Singh.

"Ji." Khushi made an effort to smile at the kindly man.

Behind him were two familiar cars, parked in the empty space adjoining his garage. Did they belong to...?

Khushi chided herself. Why should his cars be here? Khushi, Khushi..., she told herself. Get a grip over yourself. Clinging to his coat at night, seeing him everywhere, hearing his voice... You have always been sanki. Now you are ripe for a bed in an asylum!

Khushi walked up the steps to her house. The door was partly closed, leaving only a small gap between the two flaps. She raised a hand to push it open.

The door opened before she could touch it, and Arnav Singh Raizada stood on the threshold to welcome her in.

Khushi hit her head with her hand.

Arnav Singh Raizada opening the door of her house for her! Next she would imagine him doing aarti for her and escorting her in!!!

Khushi smiled in derision at her own fertile and vivid imagination, and tried to enter her house by walking right through the apparition. And crashed into his chest.

She raised wide, shocked eyes to his amused ones.

"Kya hua, Khushi? Lost your eyesight along with your dimag?"

Khushi pursed her lips & pushed him away.

"What are you doing here?", she hissed.

"Just came for a visit.", Arnav said casually.

"When did the great Arnav Singh Raizada start visiting my Buaji's house in Laxmi Nagar for no reason?", she asked, a frown creasing her forehead.

"Don't frown. You will have wrinkles.", he said, hiding his glee.

"Hhmmmppfff", she snorted, and walked into the front room, pushing him aside.

And came to a sharp halt.

Nani, Di, Akashji, & Mamaji smiled at her. Mami grimaced.

"Khussi Bitiyaa!", Nani exclaimed, and got up to hug her thoroughly.

Anjali followed, cupping her face in her hands and complaining, "So you are too busy for us, are you?"

Akashji greeted her with a 'Namaste', and she greeted Mamaji politely.

"What happened, Khushiji? Why are you silent? Surprised you, didn't we?", Anjali trilled.

"You can say that!", Khushi murmured.

Arnav hid his smile.

"Titliyaa, get tea for all.", said Buaji.

"Ji, Buaji." Khushi escaped the room with alacrity.

Buaji & Amma followed her into the kitchen.

"They have come with a proposal for Payaliyaa!", Buaji muttered.

Khushi gasped. "Who is the boy?"

"Akash babua.", said Amma.

All 3 stared at each other.

"Why?", Khushi asked the question that was running through all their heads.

Buaji sighed. "Apparently he saw her in the market and liked her, Nandkisore."

"Akashji is very nice. Just like Jiji...", Khushi smiled at Buaji. And muttered under her breath, ...and not like his brother, the Rakshas Laad Governar!"

"Did you say something, Khushi?", Amma sked anxiously.

"No, Amma.", Khushi smiled. If this wedding took place, she would be tied to the Raizadas. Forever and forever. And if there was something longer than forever, then that too! Compulsory meetings at festivals and anniversaries, forced attendance at the numerous satsangs and the daily poojas that Anjaliji organised...! With the Rakshas smirking at her! Hai Re Nandkisore! Her life would be done for!

"I think Payaliyaa too likes him.", said Amma, a worried look on her face.

Khushi gulped. A vision of her freedom floating away danced through her head. Her heart and her hopes sank without a trace.

"But I don't think his mother likes this proposal very much, Titliyaa! What kind of a lady is she, Nandkisore?", Buaji asked.

Khushi sighed. To speak the truth or not?

If she told them about Mami's nasty, vindictive tongue and ambition for her only son, that would be the end of this proposal. The Guptas would never send Jiji into a house with a Saasumma who hated the very thought of her.

But if Jiji liked Akashji... And if Akashji liked Jiji... How could she shatter their dreams? Just because she did not want to step into RM?

Khushi smiled with great effort.

"Mamiji doesn't know Jiji. And Jiji doesn't know Mamiji. Maybe Mamiji will like her very much once they get to know each other.", Khushi said, crossing her fingers behind her back. "I will make tea."

Khushi stared into the pan of water on the stove.

She felt him come to stand by her.

She stared at the water, stubborn in her effort not to look at him.

"So now you will be a part of my family, Khushi Kumari Gupta!", he said softly, with satisfaction flooding his husky voice.

Khushi straightened her lips in fury. The boiling water had nothing on the anger bubbling inside her. Devi Maiyya was going to get an earful at night! And no jalebis this week!

"Now how will you go to Lucknow? Will you leave your Jiji behind and shift to another city?", he whispered.

Khushi dumped tea leaves into the boiling water, switched off the stove, and glared at him.

"Yes, we will be related. What a misfortune!", she said.

Arnav raised his innocent eyebrow.

"What shall I call my Jiji's Jetji? Jiju? Or Bhaiyya?", she asked with a venomous look as her hands deftly placed the cups on the tray.

"No! Not Bhaiyya! Or Jiju. That's Akash.", Arnav was quick to respond. "Call me Arnavji... as you used to call me before...", he murmured.

Khushi flicked her head in disdain, and lifted the tray to leave the kitchen.

Arnav took the tray from her, his hands touching hers and sending tingles up her arms. She stepped back to escape the fire. He then took it to the living room.

At dinner, Khushi looked at the faces around the table.
Buaji & Amma were happy for Jiji, but worried if she would be able to adjust to living in such a rich family and big house... Naniji & Anjaliji had done much to allay their fears, but... Now they would have to arrange the wedding at the earliest. Clothes... jewels... food... invitations...

Babuji was pleased that Jiji would get her heart's desire.

Jiji looked shy and lost in dreams, the food on her plate neglected.

Khushi sighed. She was dead! Shagun was over. The Raizadas had filled Jiji's lap with expensive clothes and jewellery, gifts, and what not. Next, it would be sagai. Then sangeet. Then mehendi. Then haldi. And, finally, shaadi. Then pag phera. Don't think it ends there, Khushi, she thought. With your luck, there will be another dozen rasams in which the sister of the bride had to smile at the brother of the groom!

Khushi rested her head on her arm. In her efforts to go away from him, she had ended up very close to him. Any closer, and she would be sitting on his lap! She hit her head. He Devi Maiyya! Why did this happen only to her?

Khushi got into bed to lie awake, worrying.

The sagai was to take place in 4 days' time. Just 4 days. And she would have to dress up and accompany her Jiji and family to RM. She grit her teeth. He would stand there and smirk at her. If only she could knock that superior smile off his face!

Anjali asked Nani & Mami, "Why did Chotey go to the kitchen?"

"I was thinking the same, Anjali Bitiyaa! He seemed to spend a lot of time there with Khushi Bitiyaa...", mused Nani.

"Hello Hi Bye Bye! My two bitwaa, go went, gone for 2 girls from chota phamily!!!", Mami lamented.

"Don't be sad, Manorama. They are both good girls."

Mami snorted. "They dalled their dore on my bitwaa. One came to work here and got the other one in through the doorwaa too!"

"Mami, don't say such things about Khushiji!"

Mami snorted.

"Anjali Bitiyaa, we need to watch them closely during sagai.", said Nani.

"Haan, Nani. Do you think that is why Chotey refused to marry Lavanyaji?"

"We will find out on the night of the sagai. Manorama, keep your sharp eyes on them.", Nani requested.

"Saasumma, Manorama Baand ijj at your serbice (service)!", Mami promised.

Smita,😊

Here is my interpretation for part 9

When Khushi walked home in the dark her head was filled with the entries of grocery items she had done. She felt revulsion to mankind for eating various types of dals. Ugh! The hectic day had given her a head ache. Rubbing the back of her neck, Khushi trudged towards her home trampling the dry leaves that the cool breeze brought with it.

Suddenly she felt her skin prickle. She wondered how could it be? It was a sensation she got only when he was around. How could he be anywhere near here? He would either be at his office or at his home always keeping Aman on his toes.

She heard Happy Singh asking her whether she was returning from her work just then. With a smile she answered to him yes, she was. Her eyes went towards two familiar cars that were parked in the empty space adjoining his garage. She thought that they belonged to him but she rebuked herself, for thinking it to be his cars. She told herself to stop dreaming about him. Clinging to his coat at night, seeing him everywhere, hearing his voice, her world seems to be enveloped by his thoughts, feel, touch, sound. She told herself that she had been weird always but this has gone beyond limits. Her hallucinating him has made her into a classic basket case fit to gain entry into an asylum.

Climbing up the steps to her house she found the door slightly ajar. As she raised her hand to push it open, the door had opened up and she found the man who invaded her thoughts both day and night stood there welcoming her. Hitting her head with her hand to clear away her stupid thoughts as well as her delusional vision she thought what more would she be conjuring up! Will it be Arnav Singh Raizada opening the door of her house for her, welcoming her with Aarti and escorting her in!! Mocking at her thoughts and her illusion bordering reality, with a smile, she tried to enter her house by walking right through the spectre. And lo! crashed right into the hard chest. Her eyes wide open with shock raised to see an amused pair. She was asked what has happened to her? Whether her eyes too have gone on a vacation along with her brains?. Khushi clamped her lips shut, pushed him away giving him a scathing look. In an undertone, she asked what he was doing there? When he casually replied that he was on a visit, with a scrunched up forehead she asked when did Arnav Singh Raizada start to visit her Buaji's house in Laxmi Nagar for no reason. Her reaction to his presence made him want to whoop out in laughter. But hiding his glee he told her not to frown as it would bring in only wrinkles.

"It takes 32 muscles to contract to give out just a frown, but 25 muscles relax to smile. So why not smile?"

Snorting at his remark walked into the living room only to be halted at the scene. The Raizada clan had graced her living room. Nani, Anjali, Akash and Mamaji had smiles on their face and Mamiji grimace written all over hers. Nani exclaiming her name wrapped her in a bear hug. Anjali followed suit and then cupping her cheeks in her hand asked her was she too busy even to visit them? Akash greeted with a Namaste and she greeted Mamaji politely. Anjali who saw Khushi at loss of words chirped, what happened to her to be so silent. They had managed to surprise her didn't they? Khushi who was taken aback to see them at her house murmured she couldn't be more correct. Arnav hid his smile!

Buaji asked her to prepare tea for all of them. Khushi grabbing the opportunity just escaped promptly. Buaji and Amma followed her into the kitchen.

She was told by Buaji that the Raizada's had come over with a marriage proposal to Payal. Khushi hitched her breath and asked who was the boy. When Amma told her that it was Akash all the three stared at each other and Khushi gave voice to the question running in their mind, as to why this proposal was brought? Buaji answered what she had been told that he had seen Payal in the market place and had liked her. Khushi smiled hearing it and said to her Buaji that Akashji was really a nice person, very similar to her sister and under her breath she told herself unlike his brother, the Rakhshas Laad Governar!

When her Amma asked her anxiously, what was it she was saying she just shrugged and smiled at her. She thought if the wedding took place then she would be bound forever to the Raizadas'. It made her think of all the times that she would have to meet them compulsorily. There would be no skipping functions! She would have to put up with Laad Governor's smirks, quirks and fancies! What had her life come to? Amma's voice saying Payal too likes him penetrated her thoughts. She saw her mother was worried. Khushi realized that she was done! She felt that she was losing her freedom and her thoughts made her feel heavy hearted and away went all her hopes flying out of her window! Buaji had observed that Manorama was not inclined towards this proposal. She asked Khushi as to what sort of person Mami was. Khushi was caught in a dilemma. She was wondering what to say. If she told the truth that Manorama had a nasty, vindictive tongue with high aspirations towards her son's marriage, then Gupta's would never consent for this marriage. They would not be willing to send her sister as a goat to altar to be sacrificed. If her sister and Akashji liked each other and she tells the truth then their dreams would shatter into pieces. How could she do it just because she didn't like to step into RM.

With a pasted bright smile, and crossed fingers behind her back, she said that as both Mamiji and her sister were not acquainted they were bound to be distant. But once they get to know one another they maybe able to bond well. Saying so she started to brew tea.

While the water was boiling she felt Arnav nearing her. The stubborn streak in her made her keep her face averted towards the pan and not acknowledge his presence. Opening the conversation he told her softly in his husky voice that she would be now part of his family. His voice gloating with victory had her blood boil. The rage that was bubbling within her was outdoing the boiling water in its temperature. She knew that her Devi Maiyya was going to be her target. As a punishment her Devi Maiyya would have to forego her offering of jalebi's for a week. Penetrating her thoughts, he whispered to her how will she go to Lucknow now? Will she leave her sister behind and settle in another city?

She took out her anger on tea leaves by dumping it in water with force and switched of the stove to let it steep. Glaring at him she retorted, that it was a misfortune to be related! When Arnav raised his eyebrow in answer, spitting venom she continued to say, what she should call her sister's brother in law? Jiju or Bhaiyya. She was talking to him while arranging the teacups on the tray. A horrified Arnav quickly responded that she couldn't call him Bhaiyya nor Jiju. Jiju was for Akash and asked her to call him as Arnavji as she usually does. He was appalled that she could even think of calling him Bhaiyya while he was harboring lascivious thoughts on her! Flicking her head in absolute disregard, she lifted the tray. Arnav took the tray from her, his hands deliberately brushing hers, sending her senses in a tizzy. Khushi back stepped to escape being swamped by his nearness. He then took the tray to the living room.

At dinner Khushi observed her family.

Her Buaji and Amma were happy for her sister but were worried if she could adjust to living in a rich family and big house. Though Nani and Anjali had allayed much of their fears they had to arrange for the wedding as well as the trousseau at the earliest.

Her father was pleased that her sister got what she had wanted.

Her sister was in her own world of fairy tale lost in her dream with the food on her plate neglected.

Khushi knew that she was a dead duck. At shagun the Raizada's had plied her sister with expensive gifts. Next the rituals of sagai, sangeet, mehendi, haldi would be followed culminating in shaadi and then pagphera. She thought looking at her luck, fate would not stop there but would have many such rituals requiring for the sister of the bride to be pleasant to the brother of the groom. All her attempts to put a distance between them, had only ended in being much closer than before. She thought at this rate she would end up sitting on his lap! She wondered why her Devi Maiyya was putting her through this wringer?

When Khushi got into bed, sleep was elusive. Her thoughts went to Sagai that would take place in four days time. In just four days she would have to dress up and go to RM with her family and bear the smirk that would be on his face. She thought how wonderful it would be, if only she could wipe off that victorious smile off his face!

Meanwhile at RM Anjali asked Nani and Mami why her brother had gone to the kitchen at Gupta House? Nani said that she too had the same thoughts. She mused that he had spent quite a lot of time with Khushi Bitiya over there. Hearing their conversation, Mami who had hopes of getting girls' from rich family as her daughters'-in-law, told her dreams were shattered. She bemoaned that her two boys have fallen for two girls from middle class family. Nani's soothing words that both the girls were good was of no use. Mami with an ungainly snort told them that they have cast their web on her sons. One came for work and brought the other in too! Anjali who liked Khushi didn't like Mami demeaning her. She protested and asked Mami not to think so of Khushiji but only receive a snort in reply.

Nani told Anjali, that they needed to observe Arnav and Khushi closely during the Sagai. Anjali agreed with her and posed another question as to whether that was the reason behind her Chotte's refusal to marry Lavanyaji? Nani told her that they could find out during Akash's Sagai and told Manorama to be on the lookout with her unparalleled hawk eyes. Mami in her inimitable way told her mother-in-law that, Bond, Manorama Bond was On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

This update is all about ON TRACK

Khushi is being greeted by Arnav in her house. The entire Raizada family has gathered there with a proposal for Payal.

Marriage between Akash and Payal would ensure Khushi staying before his eyes. So his plan is right on track.

With the new relation Khushi is bound to the Raizada family. It has put her in a dilemma. She thinks that however much distance she tries to create, she is made to get closer to her Laad Governar. At that rate she thinks, any more closer she may end up being on his lap! Her thoughts too are right on track.

Khushi's thoughts on her family being both happy and a bit apprehensive are also right on track.

Raizada ladies having their doubts on Khushi- Arnav relationship and the reason for Arnav's refusal to marry Lavanya are also on track.

And finally the Raizada ladies are on track behind Arnav to find out all about his feelings.

"Right is right even if no one is doing it; wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it"
