OS 2: Finding Khushi

Part 13

Section 1

Buaji opened the door to a decked-up Mami, Anjali, & Nani. Behind them stood Arnav, removing his sunglasses.

"Hai Re Nandkisore! Kaa hua?", Buaji asked, worried. It was early in the morning, and the Sangeet for Payaliyaa & Akash Bitwaa was after two days... So why...?

Nani smiled. "There is nothing wrong, Madhumatiji! We just wanted to talk to you."

"Please come in!", Buaji opened the doors wide, and escorted them in and seated them. Then she called, "Garima, see who is here, Nandkisore!"

Garima came pushing Babuji in his wheelchair, and smiled to see all of them. She greeted them with folded hands. Babuji smiled at them.

After they all settled down, Nani said, praying that what she was about to say wouldn't affect Akash & Payal's wedding. "We came to talk to you about a rishta. For..for Chotey!"

Buaji's face became a picture of happiness. "Lavanyaji has returned from London?", she asked, smiling at Arnav. "Badhai ho, Devyaniji! Both your grandsons are going to get married." Buaji looked at a smiling Garima & Babuji, and said, happily to Arnav, "How happy Titliyaa will be to hear that Lavanyaji has returned!"

Amma nodded. She blessed Arnav, " May you and your wife have a very long and happy married life!"

Babuji & Buaji nodded in agreement.

The Raizadas paled. They looked at each other. Arnav opened his mouth to speak and correct the misunderstanding, but Mami pinched him on his thigh, signalling him to shut his trap.

Finally, Mami said, "Khushi is not here, Hello Hi Bye Bye?"

"No. She has gone to work.", smiled Amma. "And Payaliyaa has gone to the market."

"We came with a proposal for Khushi...", Mami said, looking at Nani.

"For Titliyaa! How kind of you!", Buaji exclaimed.

Amma & Babuji looked at the Raizadas in astonishment.

"Devyaniji, we never expected such a grand proposal for Payaliyaa. We thought that we would look for and find an ordinary boy from an ordinary family like ours for both the girls, Nandkisore. If Payaliyaa did not like Akash Bitwaa, and if you were not kind enough to overlook our lack of wealth, we would never have dreamt of marrying off Payaliyaa into such a well-known family.", said Buaji.

Amma & Babuji nodded.

"That is all we are looking for. Sanka Devi should get a good boy from a good family, hopefully an ordinary, middle-class family like ours, Nandkisore!", Buaji said.

Nani looked at Anjali, Arnav, & Mami.

"Don't worry about wealth & status, Madhumatiji. It should be the bond of love between the boy and the girl that should be considered important.", Nani soothed Buaji.

"Who is the boy, Devyaniji?", asked Amma.

Buaji, Amma, & Babuji looked eagerly at Nani for her answer.

Nani took a deep breath.

"Hamre Arnav Bitwaa!", Mami said, sparing her Saasumma the pain.

The Guptas stared at the Raizadas, their mouths open.

"Before you asks about Lavanya Kasyap, let me tell you that they did not get engaged. Sagai se pehle hi, they decided that they would not suit, and Lavanya Kasyap flew to London. By hawai jahaz.", Mami made it very clear.

"But...", Buaji said finally.

"Arnav Bitwaa and Lavanya Kasyap did not knows each other bell (well). When they knew each other more, they understood that they did not match.", Mami cut in, trying to kill the opposition.

"But... but... Jiji...", Amma stammered.

Buaji looked at her.

"Khussi Bitiyaa was employed to teach Lavanyaji our taur tareeke so that Arnav Bitwaa could marry her, wasn't she?", asked poor Amma.

The Raizadas squirmed.

"Lavanyaji was staying in your house to learn all this, wasn't she, Devyaniji? And Khussi taught her everything, didn't she, Nandkisore?", Buaji asked, a perplexed frown on her face.

Nani nodded.

"Khussi said that Lavanyaji & Arnav Bitwaa's engagement was announced on Diwali night... by Arnav Bitwaa... at the party...", Buaji looked at him.

Arnav said, "Yes." The lump in his throat made speech difficult.

"Phir kaa hua, Bitwaa?", Amma asked. "You wanted to marry Lavanyaji... Then why a proposal for Khussi..?"

Arnav wanted to tell them that he had never wanted to marry Lavanya, had never loved her, only liked her, never known what love was... Before... before that night at Sheesh Mahal... That he had not recognised this fire in him, had fought it with all he possessed, but had thankfully failed... But how could he? Half the time he did not make any sense to himself. How would he make sense to Buaji? Or Amma & Babuji?

How could he tell them that he hadn't understood the damage he had done to Lavanya's reputation? She had been willing to enter into a live in, finding nothing wrong in it as the culture and society that she had been brought up in were accepting of such relationships. But they were not in London. They were in India. And his family was orthodox. He should have known better'. He should have thought of Di, of Akash's future...of Lavanya's reputation... of Khushi's pain... of his own happiness...

He should have known better. He should have thought about the consequences of inviting Lavanya to stay in his house before doing so. He had been so bent on trying to forget Khushi that... that he had almost committed the worst mistake of his life...

Finally, he said, "Lavanya & I... we are too different. We would have been unhappy together. We found out in time. So we decided not to get married."

Mami, Nani, & Anjali nodded.

Buaji, Amma, & Babuji looked at each other.

Finally, Buaji said, "Nandkisore, it looks bad. Khussi came to train your bride, and now your bride is gone, and you want to marry Khussi..."

Nani blinked wet eyes. Anjali bit her lip. Mami pressed Arnav's hand.

Amma nodded. "Jiji, if people say that Khussi pushed Lavanyaji out and snared Arnav Bitwaa..!"

"Hai Re Nandkisore!", Buaji whispered. "All your friends met Lavanyaji and heard you announcing your engagement, Bitwaa. Then if you get married to Khussi, people will talk. They will blame Sanka Devi for coming between you and Lavanyaji!"

The Raizadas had no answer to give. They were familiar with the ways of the world, and could not dispute these statements.

Buaji looked at Arnav's pale, anxious face. She could not find the heart to refuse him outright. So she said, "Why don't we talk this over with Titliyaa when she gets home, Nandkisore? I will let you know what she says."

The Raizadas had to be satisfied with this.

Smita,😊

Here is my interpretation to Section 1 of Part 13

When Buaji opened the door it was to see the Raizada Ladies Brigade in the forefront. Arnav at the background was removing his aviators. Knowing that the Sangeet for Akash and Payal was two days later and still seeing them at her doorstep early in the morning, Buaji got worried and asked what happened. Nani with a smile put her mind to rest. She said that there was nothing wrong and they just wanted to have a talk. Opening the doors wide she invited them to her parlor. Once they were comfortably seated she called out to Garima. Pushing her husband's wheelchair Garima came out and greeted them and Babuji smiled. Nani opened the talk with a prayer sent to her Godess Devi Maiyya with a request for it not to cast a shadow on Akash and Payal's wedding. She said that they came to talk to the Gupta's about a proposal for Chotey.

Buaji was overjoyed. Beaming a smile she asked whether Lavanyaji had returned from London. She congratulated Nani for both her grandsons getting married. Buaji looked at the smiling Garima and her brother and told them her Titiliya would be extremely glad that Lavanyaji has returned. Amma nodded and blessed Arnav to have a long and happy wedded life with his wife. Babuji and Buaji agreed with her.

Hearing this the Raizada's became whey-faced. They looked at each other and when Arnav was about to correct them he was pinched on his thighs by Mami as a signal, not to utter anything. Finally Mami asked, where was Khushi Bitiya. She was told by her Amma that she had gone to work and Payal had gone to market. Mami nodding at them, looking at Nani said that, they had come there with a proposal  for Khushi. Hearing this Buaji exclaimed with happiness that, to think of getting a proposal for her Titaliya was extremely kind of them. Amma and Bauji were astonished and looked at the Raizadas. Buaji told them addressing Naniji that, they had not expected such a proposal for Payal, from a wealthy family. They were on the lookout for a boy from an ordinary family like theirs for both their girls. If Payal had not liked Akash bitwa and if they had not overlooked their lack of wealth they would not even have dreamt of marrying off Payal into such a renowned family. Babuji and Amma concurred with her. She continued to say that, that was what they are in search for her Sanka Devi. A good boy from a good family, hopefully from middle-class family like theirs. Their expectations made Nani look at her family. She told Buaji that not to worry about wealth and status. It has to be the bond of love between the boy and the girl that needed to be considered. Amma asked her as to who was the boy. All the three Gupta's were eager to know and looked at Nani. Nani took a deep breath thinking how to break it to them. Seeing her dilemma, Mami took it upon her to place the proposal. She said that it was their Arnav Bitwa. Gupta's were agape and simply stared at them. Before they could question,  Mami made it clear that Lavanya Kasyap and he hadn't got engaged. Before the engagement itself they decided that they were not suited and Lavanya Kasyap flew back to London. When Buaji was about to ask, Mami plunged in with her explanation that both of them hadn't known each other well. Once they came to know they realized that they were not made for each other. Mami tried to quell the opposition. But Amma had questions to ask. Though she stammered in the beginning, deriving strength from her sister-in-law, she asked them that Khussi Bitiya was employed to train Lavanyaji about our traditions so that Arnav bitwa could marry wasn't it. Hearing this, the Raizada's were ill at ease. Buaji continued it. She asked them with a confused expression, that Lavanya was with them to learn all those things wasn't it? Khussi taught her all those things didn't she? When Nani nodded she said that Khushi had said that Lavanyaji's and Arnav Bitwaa's marriage was announced at the Diwali Party. Saying so she looked at Arnav who felt a lump settle in his throat, but managed to say yes with great difficulty. So Amma asked him what happened when you wanted to marry Lavanyaji why was a proposal brought to Khussi.

Arnav who wanted to tell them all that made him do it was at a loss as he knew they wouldn't be able to understand how his mind worked as he himself was now unable to understand the logic behind his actions. How could he tell them that he never had any intention to marry Lavanya in the first place as he never loved her but only liked her. How could he say that he had never known what love was before The Angel fell into his arms at Sheesh Mahal. How could he tell that he had not recognized that the fire that had lit and warmed his heart which had lain frozen had begun to thaw. Unknowingly he was fighting against the tide with all his might and thankfully he had not succeeded as he usually did. How can he say all these things to Amma, Babuji and Buaji?

Could he tell them that he hadn't realized the damage done to Lavanya's reputation? Could he tell them that Lavanya had willingly entered into a live-in relationship as it was not a social stigma for her, for it was not looked down upon where she had been brought up? But that was London and they were in India. Could he tell them that he had failed to recognize the fact that being in India that it would be frowned upon? Could he tell that he had not thought of the repercussions of his actions, knowing that he himself hailed from an orthodox family, Could he tell that he had not thought that his actions would have a bearing on his Di, Akash's future, Lavanya's reputation. Could he tell them that he had put Khushi under severe pain and staked his own happiness.

He now knew he should have known better. He should have thought about the consequences of having  Lavanya in his house before doing so. He was fighting himself against the emotions aroused by Khushi's presence and he had thought forgetting Khushi was the solution to be in control of his emotions. By trying to do so he was about to commit the worst mistake of his life, but luckily he had not done so.

With all these thoughts flitting in his mind he collected himself to answer their query. He told them in a simple straight forward way that, Lavanya and he were very different. They had different outlook and would have been unhappy together. This they had found out in time and had mutually decided not to get married. Though Nani, Mami and Anjali bobbed their head concurring with what he said, the expression on the faces of the Gupta's said that they had some reservations.

Giving a voice to their reservation, Buaji told him that it looked bad. Khushi who had come to train his bride-to-be, with her out of the way, would now become his bride. Hearing this, tears pooled in the eyes of Nani, Anjali bit back a sob, Mami clasped Arnav's hand and gave it a squeeze that asked him to be brave and she was with him all the way. Amma too voiced her opinion addressing Buaji she said that, what if people said that it was Khussi who pushed Lavanyaji out of Arnav's life and trapped him! Realizing the enormity of the scandal they might have to face, Buaji addressed Arnav and in a shocked whispering voice said that all his friends and acquaintance had met Lavanyaji and heard the announcement of betrothal, and now if you get married to Khussi, it is bound to set the tongues wagging and they would be pointing their finger at her Sanka Devi, as the one to break his and Lavanyaji's relationship. The Raizada's could not refute her statement, as they had been the target in the past of such malicious attacks of wagging tongues. Buaji looked at Arnav who was pasty faced and anxiety written all over him. Her large warm heart found it difficult to refuse outright and so she said that it would be better, if it was first talked with her Titaliyaa when she comes home and then would let them know her opinion.

This update is about being a RECIPIENT.

First Arnav becomes the recipient of good wishes for his marriage though it was a misunderstanding.

"By all means marry; if you get a good wife, you'll     become happy; if you get a bad one, you'll become     a philosopher"

                                    ~ Socrates

The Raizada's become recipients of gratitude from Guptas' for overlooking their lack of wealth and status while seeking an alliance for Akash with Payal.

"When we give cheerfully and accept gratefully,           everyone is blessed"

                                     ~Maya Angelou

The Gupta's become recipients of the proposal for marriage between Arnav Singh Raizada and Khushi Kumari Gupta.

The Raizada's become recepients of probe into the past of Arnav with Lavanya.

"The past is never where you think you left it"

                                      ~ Katherine Anne Porter

Arnav comes under microscope for his actions and becomes the recipient of the repercussions of his deeds.

The Raizada's become recipients of reservation of Gupta's on how the past of Arnav with Lavanya, could cast a shadow on Khushi's character and her future.

"Character is like a tree and reputation its shadow.     The shadow is what we think it is and the tree is the   real thing"

                                    ~ Abraham Lincoln

Arnav becomes the recipient of the large and warm heart of Buaji who did not want to reject him outrightly without giving a chance for him to fight for it. His pale face filled with anxiety tugged at her heartstrings. He becomes the recipient of the lifeline thrown by Buaji. If it was left to Garima she would have outrightly rejected the alliance.

"Be a good human being, a warm-hearted                     affectionate person. That is my fundamental belief.   Having a sense of caring, a feeling of compassion       will bring happiness of peace of mind to oneself         and automatically create a positive atmosphere"

                                      ~ Dalai Lama

The update ends with everything resting in the hands of Khushi Kumari Gupta, the chit of a girl who dared to defy the business tycoon, Arnav Singh Raizada and sent him in a tizzy by bombarding him with certain home truths. A girl whom he had reviled, ridiculed and lacerated, but had the capacity to bounce back without compromising her dignity and self respect held the answer to whether he would be the recipient of her largesse of forget and forgive nature and above all her love.

"Forgiveness is an act of the will, and the will can         function regardless of the temperature of the             heart"

                                     ~ Corrie ten Boom

All Arnav Singh Raizada could do was wait, with patience a virtue he lacked, to know whether he was the recipient or not!

"After you find out all the things that can go wrong,   your life becomes less about living and more about   waiting"

                                      ~ Chuck Palahniuk, Choke

So for Arnav Singh Raizada, a go-getter,  it is time to wait...

"Waiting hurts. Forgetting hurts. But not knowing     what decision will be made sometimes be the most     painful..."

~ Jos N. Harris, MI VIDA

That's it from me. Hope you enjoy it.
