OS 2: Finding Khushi

Part 5: A Battle of Wills

Arnav ruthlessly cancelled his lunchtime appointment, and walked into her office during her break.

Khushi was tidying her table when she felt a familiar gust of wind ruffle her hair. She looked up, and there he was.

Arnav Singh Raizada...

She stared at him. Six feet of a lean body in dark formal clothes. And his eyes burning into hers. It had been so long...

"Di needs a private secretary.", he did not waste any time. He mentioned an obscenely large amount as salary. "She wants you."

She looked at him. His face looked as though it had been carved out of stone.

"I have a job.", Khushi said finally.

"This will pay better." He was curt.

Khushi nodded. "But I don't want it."

Arnav threw a bundle of notes on her table. "Come with me.", he ordered.

"No.", she said, shocked & hurt eyes on him. "Never."

Arnav stepped forward to take hold of her arm. She drew back.

"Don't touch me, Mr. Raizada. I am not your girl friend, Lavanyaji." Her eyes were cold. "And I am sure Anjaliji can arrange your sagai & wedding without my help."

Arnav lowered his eyes. He gulped.

"Lavanya has returned to London.", he said softly.

Khushi stood, silent, careful to keep her tears at bay.

"Our.. our sagai has been cancelled.", he said.

Khushi stared at him with astonished eyes. Arnav looked away.

Finally, Khushi whispered, "So you made her cry too..."

His eyes flew to hers. "Khushi'."

"She wanted to marry you. And you knew it. You pretended to give her what she wanted, and then took it away from her...", she continued.

"Khushi'' Lavanya and I, we wouldn't suit'"

"How come you didn't think of that when you announced your engagement, Mr. Raizada?" Her tone was cutting.

"Khushi'.", he protested.

"Anyway, all this is not my problem. Your dheela character is your problem.", she stated in an impersonal voice.

"Khushi'", Arnav fumed, his tone warning her to mind her words. But Khushi was beyond all care.

"And your anger. And the foolishness your anger drives you to.", Khushi said.

"Don't talk to me like this!", ordered a glowering Arnav, feeling the pinch.

"Kyon? What will you do if I talk to you like this?", Khushi challenged.

He stepped forward to take her arm and haul her close, his body, mind, head, and heart hungry for her... for her nearness... for her scent... for the softness of her silky skin... for her smile... for the twinkle in her eyes...

Khushi darted behind the table, avoiding him adroitly. She had lots of practice at this.

"You did your best to throw me out of your house & your life. For months. And now, finally, I am out. Then why are you here?", Khushi did not mince words.

Arnav looked at her determined face. She wanted answers. But unfortunately, he did not know the answers. Or he was not willing to find out the answers... or give them to her...

His silence irritated her no end.

She said, "You hate me, don't you? You want me out of your life. You find my low aukat and third-class, middle-class mentality despicable, don't you? One moment, you push me away and the other moment '.."

Her voice died away at the look on his face as they both relived the moments by the pool on Diwali night.

Khushi looked away, swallowing the lump in her throat.

"What do you want, Mr. Raizada?", asked Khushi, finally. "Do you even know what you want?"

Arnav stared at her. He knew what he wanted. Her in his house, among his family. Filling his house with laughter. Although he couldn't say why or how... There was much he wanted to say, but... He had never been one to make speeches. Or declarations. Words always abandoned him in moments of need...

"Chodiye! Kya farak padta he? What does it matter anyway?", Khushi said. "Good bye, Mr. Raizada."

"Come home with me, Khushi.", Arnav ordered.

"No." She was equally adamant.

"You will regret this.", Arnav warned, determined to get her back within his sphere of influence.

Khushi stood still, staring at him. He turned to go.

"One minute, Mr. Raizada.", she said.

Arnav turned around, hopeful that she had seen sense.

Khushi gathered up the bundle of notes and handed it over to him. Her fingers grazed his as she placed the cash in his hands. His breath hitched. He watched the pulse in her throat throb.

They stood looking at each other.

Khushi received a phone call from Shuklaji, the owner of the house Buaji and her family were staying in.

"Ji, Shuklaji. How can I help you?", Khushi asked. How did he get my phone number? And why is he calling me? He should be dealing with Buaji''. These thoughts ran through her head as she listened to him.

"I have sold the house that your Buaji is renting to Amezing Developers.", Shukla dropped his bomb.

"Oh!", murmured Khushi.

"The rent has been hiked to Rs. 20,000.", Shukla continued.

Khushi gasped.

"Your rent is due tomorrow. The owner of Amezing Developers wants you to pay it by 4 in the evening at his office.", Shukla said.

Khushi felt her heart stop.

"Who is the owner?", she asked, her sound weak and feeble.

"You might have heard of him. Arnav Singh Raizada, the tycoon.", Shukla said.

Typhoon, not tycoon. Born to wreak havoc and cause destruction in her life... Her eyes grew wet. Devi Maiyya was playing with her... The more she tried to stay out of his life, the more she was being dragged into it...

Shukla cut the call after giving her the address of the office, warning her once more of the deadline.

"Twenty thousand! Hai Re Nandkisore!", Buaji gasped, her asthma kicking in. She collapsed in the chair.

Khushi ran for her inhaler, Payal ran for a glass of hot water, and Amma tried to make Buaji more comfortable. Babuji watched them with helpless eyes.

After Buaji had started breathing normally, Khushi asked, "What shall we do now?"

"How will we pay such a huge amount every month, Jiji?", Amma asked.

"We can't.", Buaji stated, her head in her hands. "We will either have to shift to a smaller house or return to Lucknow. Delhi is getting too expensive for us, Nandkisore!"

Amma, Khushi, & Payal nodded. Khushi's salary & Buaji's pension wouldn't be enough now that the rent was hiked.

"We will worry about that later.", Buaji said. "First let us get the money to pay the new owner tomorrow."

Amma nodded, left the room, and came back with a bangle in her hand.

"Pawn this at our usual jewellers, Titliyaa, on your way to the office. You can go to the developer's office during the lunch break and give the money.", Buaji said. "Do you want me to come with you?"

Khushi looked at her sick Buaji. "No, Buaji, I will go alone." After all, he was fighting her, not her Buaji!

Khushi looked at Kishorilalji.

"I can give you only 17,000 for this, Khushi."

"But I need twenty, Kishorilalji!", Khushi said, her eyes desperate.

"Do you have something more to pawn?", he asked.

Khushi looked at the clock. 3.30. She had just 30 minutes to meet the deadline. There was no time to go home and get another piece of jewellery.

She looked at her bangles. Glass. Her neck was bare. Her feet'.

She looked at her Amma's payal, her last nishani, her only heirloom... Then she looked at the clock. 3.35...

Khushi quickly took her payal off, and handed them over to Kishorilalji, her heart weeping. She had never been without them after her wearing them at the age of eight.
"Khushi Kumari Gupta...", she told herself. "You have already lost your parents... And now your family will lose the roof over your head. What is a pair of payal compared to that?"

She took the money that Kishorilalji handed over, and raced after a rickshaw. It was drizzling. The fine rain wet her suit as she threw herself on to the seat. "Go fast, Bhaiyya!", she begged the driver. "I have to be there before 4pm."

Arnav sat in his seat in his new office, and looked at the clock. Five to 4...

She wouldn't be able to raise the amount. She would have to come to him to ask for time, and he could make her come home. He heaved a sigh of relief. She would have no choice, and she would finally be back where she belonged...

He leaned back in his chair. Tonight, he would have to talk to Di & convince her of her need for a private secretary...

The phone in his room rang. The receptionist announced the arrival of Khushi Kumari Gupta.

"Send her to my room.", he instructed. He calmed his thundering heart, and waited.

Smita,😊

Here is the interpretation for Part 5

Cancelling all his appointments, Arnav walked into Khushi's work place during her lunch break. Khushi who was clearing up her table, felt a soft breeze blow indicating the presence of the only person capable of making her feel so. When she looked up she knew her instincts were right on target. Arnav Singh Raizada, the man who haunted her dreams, the man who made her dream of him first and later shatter it, was present. His six foot frame clad in his trademark three piece suit had his eyes on her with such intensity that his caramel eyes took on a darker hue. She stared at him taking him in and memorizing all the details.

Without wasting time, he opened the conversation saying his Di, needed a secretary and she wants her offering a really tempting remuneration that was beyond her expectation. She looked at his impassive face and said that she already had a job. Hearing her reply, Arnav told her in a curt voice that his offer was way better than what she was doing and it paid well. Khushi bobbing her head agreed with what he had to say and later said that still she doesn't want it! Throwing a sheaf of notes on her table he ordered her to go with him. His audacity to throw money at her and his thought that a bundle of notes could make her go with him left her shocked and hurting. With a pain filled eyes she refused to comply and when he tried to grab her by her arm she pulled herself away from his reach. With eyes dripping icicles, she told him not to touch her. She was not his girlfriend Lavanya. She went on to say that she was not needed by Anjali, to arrange his engagement and wedding. The arrow found its mark. Her talk pierced Arnav's heart. Gulping the guilt, he informed her in a soft voice that he and Lavanya had broken up and she had returned to London. Khushi stood silently assimilating what he had to say and tried hard to keep her tears at bay. Hearing him declare about the cancellation of the plans for engagement, a stunned Khushi looked at him with sharp accusing eyes. She just managed to whisper that he had made Lavanya to cry too. His eyes flew to her and called out to her. But Khushi was way too engrossed in what she was saying. She told him that Lavanya wanted to be his wife and he knew about it. Yet he held it like a carrot and took it away. This time Arnav's mumble that Lavanya and he weren't suited was heard by her. She asked him scathingly, how was that they were not compatible not thought while announcing his intention to get married to Lavanya. She addressed him as Mr. Raizada, as an ex- employer. His protest was cut short by her saying that the laxity in his character was a problem that he needed to worry and not her, in an impersonal manner. Arnav's warning against her usage of such words to describe him went unheeded. Continuing her tirade, she told him that his anger was the root cause. It drives him to do foolish things. Though knowing whatever she told him were accurate, he bristled and ordered her not to talk like that. Khushi was beyond listening to his threats and orders. She challenged him by asking what he would do if she talks? He stepped towards her to engulf her in his embrace, close to his parched body, mind and heart that was yearning for her proximity, yearning for her scent that sent him to raptures, yearning for the touch of her silky soft skin, yearning for the smile that was exclusively meant for him, yearning for the twinkle in her eyes that transported him to the world of their own.. But Khushi once again douched the fire within him by darting behind the table nimbly with practiced ease.

She told him that his wish to throw her out of his house, since a few months had come true. Then why was he hell bent on getting her into his house again. Seeing her determined face he knew that she sought answers from him. But unfortunately he himself was not aware of it. Neither was he willing to find out nor was he ready to give her even if he knew.

His silence riling her, she asked that he hated her didn't he? He wanted her out of his life. He found her low status, middle class mentality way below his social circle didn't he? Then why was it that one moment he would push her away and the very next.. she couldn't continue as she found he too was reliving those wonderful romantic moments by the pool on Diwali night. Khushi turned her face away. Swallowing the lump in her throat she asked him, what was it he wanted or was he even aware of what he wanted. Arnav stared at her, and was silent, but knew what he wanted. He wanted her to be in his house, amidst his family, her presence that would bring in laughter with it. He was a man of few words. He was not one who was bestowed with a flair for words and in his moment of need the words eluded him..

Khushi told him to forget that she asked such questions. What difference would it make! It wouldn't be of any significance now. She finally bid him adieu. But Arnav Singh Raizada was not the one to listen. He ordered her to go home with him. Her refusal to comply, brought in a threat from him saying that she would rue at her decision. Arnav was determined to place her within the reach of his influence. But Khushi resolutely stood still and when he turned to leave, she asked him to wait for a second. Arnav thought she had come to her senses and turned around, just to see her gathering the bundle of notes and place it in his hand. Her touch while her fingers grazed his had him hitch his breath. Along with him he noted she too had been affected. The pulse in her throat was throbbing. Knowing that mere touch affected the other they could do nothing but stare.

The call received from Shuklaji the landlord of their house informed Khushi that their house had been sold to Amezing Developers. It was a bolt out of blue. While receiving the call Khushi had wondered why Shuklaji was calling her when the lease was under her Buaji's name. Shukla told her that the new owners had hiked the rent to Rs. 20,000/- and it was due the next day. The owner wanted the rent to be paid by 4 p.m. the next day. Khushi felt stumped but still asked him as to who the owner was. When she heard it was Arnav Singh Raizada, the tycoon, she thought he was more of a typhoon rather than tycoon, born to cause upheaval and hell bent on causing mayhem in her life. It was a bane that plagued her life. The more she tried to distance herself the more she was being pulled into the vortex. Tears pooled in her eyes and she thought that the Goddess in whom she had implicit trust was playing with her. Before cutting the call, Shukla giving her the address of the office warned her of the deadline. When the family heard about the hike in rent, Buaji's asthama played up. Giving her the inhaler they tried to make her comfortable. Her father watched this with helpless eyes. Once her breathing became normal, Khushi asked what their next step would be. When Amma asked how to meet such a huge amount every month, Buaji told her simply that they just couldn't afford it. So the solution lay in either shifting to a smaller house or return to Lucknow as Delhi was getting too expensive for them. The rest agreed with her. With just Buaji's pension and Khushi's salary it was difficult to meet the ends with the hiked up rent. Buaji told them that they could worry about it later. The matter that needed immediate attention was the rent to be paid the next day. Amma brought out her gold bangle and Khushi was asked by Buaji to pawn it at their regular jeweler and pay the money during her lunch break. She even asked Khushi whether she should accompany her. Seeing her Buaji sick Khushi told that she could manage, knowing that it was her fight and not her Buaji's.

Looking at Kishorilalji, their jeweler who had just told her that the bangle would fetch Rs.17,000/- she said she needed twenty. He asked her whether she had any other thing to pawn. Khushi seeing that it was half past three and there was no time to go home for another piece found she had only a pair of Payal, her mother's, her only heirloom. She was filled with sorrow to part with it. Since there was no time to waste, she quickly took it off, steeling herself by thinking that she had already lost her parents and now when her family was about to lose their roof over their head what use was the payal to her. Still her heart bled at parting with the payal that had adorned her ankle since she was an eight year old. Taking the money, without minding the drizzle, hailing a rickshaw she sped towards the Developers office to be on time.

Arnav Singh Raizada, who was sitting in his new office, saw that the time was five to four. He was sure that she would not be able to raise the needed amount, would come to him seeking more time and then bingo according to his plan he could manipulate her into coming to his home. Heaving a sigh of relief, that he has her cornered he relaxed. He thought his next step was to convince his Di of her necessity to have a personal secretary. While these thoughts were whirling in his mind his phone rang. The receptionist announced that Khushi Kumari Gupta had arrived. He instructed that she be sent to his cabin. He calmed his heart that had started pounding vigorously as soon as he had heard that Khushi had arrived.

In this update at every gauntlet thrown by Arnav Singh Raizada at her, Khushi Kumari Gupta tries to find a way to overcome it.

In the beginning Arnav orders Khushi to work in his house as his sister's PA but she refuses.

He offers her an enticing salary she spurns saying she already has one.

He offers her money to quit the job, she gives the wads back to him.

When she accuses him of playing with the feelings of Lavanya and casts a shadow on his character, he warns her against usage of such words. She refuses to heed.

When he tries to hold her, she avoids it adroitly.

When the rent of her house is increased after he bought it, and she was given a deadline to pay within a day, she and her family manage to raise the amount and take decision to shift.

That's why it is AT LOGGERHEADS

That's it from me. Hope you enjoy it!
