OS 2: Finding Khushi

Part 4

Arnav walked into the house, Akash following him.

Nani, Mami, & Di were waiting for them in the living room.

Akash went to join them, but Arnav made to take the stairs to his room.

"Chotey!", Nani called.

Arnav shut his eyes. He knew the tone. She was furious. And Di would join her in cornering him today.

"Yes, Nani?", he looked at her, his face impassive.

"Ms. Kasyap packed her things and left the house at noon.", Nani bit out.

Arnav nodded.

"She said that you had both decided that you did not suit.", Di said.

"She said right.", said Arnav.

"You both decided? We don't believe that. You decided. And she went home crying. Isn't that the truth?", asked a wise Nani.

Arnav nodded. "I told her that we wouldn't suit. That we would be miserable living together. She thought about it and agreed with me."

"But she loved you!", gasped Anjali.

"She doesn't know me. And the little she knows is not very comforting.", Arnav said.

"You love her!", shouted Di.

"I don't.", Arnav was definite on this point. "I never did. I liked her. I still do. That's all."

Nani & Di glared at him.

"I thought it was better to stop the sagai before it happened than to get engaged & married and then divorced.", Arnav said.

Nani & Di looked at him with open mouths. But Mami nodded.

"Arnav Bitwaa is right. When he marries, he should marry willingly. Bhat ijj the ujj (use) of marrying when he does not want to get married,Hello Hi Bye Bye?"

"He should have thought of all this earlier, Manorama. Not after bringing Ms. Kasyap to stay here and announcing his engagement to her publicly!", Nani spit out.

"Saasumma! Ms. Kasyap is flying to London." Mami flapped her hands as though to show Ms. Kasyap flying. "And hamre Arnav Bitwaa ijj here, working, working, and working. Ab pachtaye hoth kaa, jab all birds chuk gayii khet? And flew away after having dinner?"

Arnav sat in his room, the laptop in front of him.A slight breeze ruffled the leaves of his plants and the surface of the pool.

His mind was churning, his head was pounding. Day and night, all he could see were her tear-filled eyes as she stood in his garden and looked into the hall when he was letting the whole world know that he was marrying Lavanya Kashyap.

And her pain-filled eyes as he stood on the veranda of her house and insulted her so thoroughly that she wouldn't dare to look him in the face again.

And her cold eyes as she stood in her office and made it clear to him that she was out of his life and staying there.

Eyes which condemned him for not having the guts to face what was brewing between them '. for taking refuge under Lavanya's pallu'..

Arnav knocked the laptop off the table. It fell on the carpeted floor. He stood up and paced the length & breadth of the room.

Why couldn't he get her image out of his mind? Why were her words ringing in his ears? Why couldn't he stay away from her?

He grabbed his car keys and rushed out of his room.

Mami, Akash, Di, & Nani watched as Arnav made a beeline for the door, not even noticing them. As he did every night.

Nani sighed, "This boy! When will he find peace? Driving around most of the night and working all day!"

Anjali said, "Why is he so upset, Nani?"

"It ijj not Ms. Kasyap. That ijj pukka.", said sharp Mami. "Akash Bitwaa, ijj there some other girlwaa in the ophice (office) that Arnav Bitwaa ijj interested in?"

"No, Mate. Bhai does not talk to any girls. He only shouts at everybody.", Akash said.

Nani & Anjali sighed.

"This ijj a mystery.", Mami declared. "Inbestigation karega padi!"

Arnav drove rapidly to Laxmi Nagar. He stretched his neck to get a good peek at her front door. It was open. Golden light in the front room revealed Devi Maiyya's idol and the furniture in the living room.

As he watched, Buaji came out of the house, a plate in her hand, and hollered, "O Sanka Devi! Aren't you coming home for dinner?"

Khushi replied from Happy Singh's workshop. "I am coming, Buaji!"

"If you don't come now, I will feed your dinner to the dogs, Nandkisore!", Buaji retorted.

"One minute, Buaji!"

He saw Khushi run across the road to her Buaji. She opened the latch of the gate with her elbow, her hands being covered with grease.

Buaji hit her head with her hand.

"Lo, dekho, Nandkisore! Parmeswari is covered in dirt! How will you eat food?"

Khushi giggled. "You feed me, Buaji. Just like you used to feed me & Jiji in our childhood."

Buaji glared at her. Arnav felt a smile stretch his lips.

"And this is not dirt, Buaji! This is grease."

"What were you doing, playing with grease, Nandkisore?"

"Happyji & I were operating on a car, Buaji. Grease in a car is like blood in a man."

"Grease ki bachi, come here!", Buaji pulled her by her ear towards the cot in the yard and pushed her on to it.

She sat next to Khushi, and began feeding her.

Payal came out, a tray with 3 tea cups on it. She joined Buaji & Khushi, and all three began talking & laughing.

Arnav sat watching them, smiling whenever Khushi smiled, filling his head and heart with images of her.

Once Buaji had fed her to her heart's content, she got up and left for the house. Payal carried the tray away.

The smile fell away from Khushi's face. She looked pale & ghost-like in the moonlight. Arnav gulped, a lump of pain and regret choking him.

She looked at the stars in the sky, anguish in her heart. She sat still, watching the tiny pinpoints of light till Buaji summoned her in.

Arnav sat outside her house, watching the lights in her bedroom go out. She would come to the window now. She would spend most of the night at the window looking at the stars, he knew from watching her every night.

Soon, Khushi came to stand at the window. She stood still for a while. As he watched, she hugged herself, her shoulders hunched. A tear slowly trailed down her cheek.

Arnav clutched the steering wheel. No more. She had to come back. To RM. To him. Nothing else was acceptable.

Smita,😊

Here is my interpretation for Part 4.

When Arnav walked into the house, followed by Akash, the ladies of his house had gathered in the living room awaiting their return. As Akash joined them, Arnav started towards his room. He heard his Nani call out to him. Her tone gave him the indication that he was going to be hammered and his sister would join forces with her. Nani was livid. Schooling his face to be expressionless, he asked his Nani to shoot out. She told him that Ms. Kasyap had left the house for good. He nodded and let her know that he was aware of it. His sister took it from there and said that Lavanya told them that both, he and Lavanya had decided that they were not suited. Arnav concurred with it. Nani who was wise to Arnav's ways said she will not buy that it was a mutual decision. She pointed out that it must be he who decided and Ms. Kasyap was left high and dry. Wasn't that the truth? Arnav once again agreed with her and said that he told her that they were not made for each other and living together would only be making their lives totally miserable. After thinking she too had come to the same conclusion. Anjali who was listening panted that Lavanya loved him. Arnav brushed her claim aside and told her that Lavanya doesn't know him well and whatever she had seen of him were not really heart-warming. When Anjali shouted that he loved Lavanya, he disagreed but conceded that he liked her and that remained so even now. Hearing his explanation Nani and Anjali were furious. He continued to say that he had thought it was better to stop before the engagement itself rather than get engaged, married and head towards divorce. Nani and Anjali were left stumped by his logical explanation, but Mami concurred. When she said while marrying it should be willingly done, Nani told her bitterly, that should have been thought about earlier and not after bringing Ms. Kasyap and announcing his engagement publicly. Mami argued for Arnav saying, Ms. Kasyap herself was going back to London, and Arnav was immersed in work as usual. Using a 'muhawre' she reiterated that when the concerned parties were fine with their decision of whom was they really worried about.

Arnav though trying to work in his room had not been successful. His mind was filled with the images of Khushi. The expression of pain and betrayal in Khushi's eyes as she stood in his garden overlooking the living room while he announced his intention to marry Lavanya Kashyap was piercing him. The image of the pain-filled eyes of Khushi while he was spewing insults on her in front of her house. The image of her eyes that was cold enough to send chill to his bones declaring that she was beyond his reach. The expression in her eyes condemning him for the lack of guts to face his emotions and feelings towards her, but instead resorting to take refuge behind Lavanya. These images were flashing before him and pricking and piecing him, as though in vengeance were not giving him any respite. He was really riled up. Whatever he did would neither satisfy him nor subside his anger. In his frustration he knocked the laptop off the table on to the carpeted floor and started pacing in the room like a caged lion. His head was pounding with questions. Why couldn't he get her image out of his mind? Why were her words ringing in his ears? Why couldn't he stay away from her? Without getting any answers, dissatisfied, he grabbed his car keys and rushed out.

Mami, Di and Nani watched him heading out like every night. He was not even aware of their presence. A worried Nani sighed and said, when will her Chotte find his peace? He works hard in the daytime and drives around most of the night! Anjali wanted to know why was he so upset and asked her Nani. The hawkeyed Mami told her that it was surely not due to Ms. Kasyap. She asked her son Akash was there any girl he liked in the office? Akash told them that Arnav never spoke to any girl and even if he did it was to shout. Though Nani and Anjali sighed giving up the probe, Mami declared this was a mystery worth investigating.

Meanwhile Arnav drove rapidly to Laxmi Nagar to begin his daily vigilance at night. Stretching his neck he had a good peek at the front door of Khushi's house. Through the open door, golden light was filtering out. He could see the furniture and the idol of Devi Maiyya. As he was observing, her Buaji came out and bellowed her to come home for dinner. The answering call came from Happy Singh's garage that she would be coming. When Buaji threatened to feed her dinner to the dogs if she was not immediately obeyed, Khushi asked for a minutes time. Soon she was rushing towards the house with hands covered in grease. She opened the latch of the gate by pushing with elbow. Looking at her dirty hand Buaji admonished her and asked how she will be able to eat with such dirty hands. With a giggle, Khushi asked her to feed, like she used to do while they were kids. Buaji glared at her audacity, but Arnav smiled.

When Khushi told her aunt that it was not dirt but grease, she was asked whether she was playing with it. She told Buaji using medical jargon, that Happyji and she were operating on a car. And the grease is like a blood in man. Pulling her by the ear and admonishing, Buaji took Khushi towards the cot in the yard and made her sit on it. Sitting next to Khushi she began to feed her while Payal brought out three steaming cups of tea. All three began talking and laughing while Arnav watched them. Whenever Khushi smiled, a smile would appear on his face too. Watching her he would fill his head and heart with her images. Once she was fed to heart's content, Buaji and Payal went inside. Khushi who was smiling till then let go of the mask. The moonlight enhanced her paleness giving a ghost like appearance to her. Arnav gulped at the lump of pain that he felt knowing that he was the source of pain in her.She looked at the stars as though seeking warmth and solace from its light. When Buaji called she went in and Arnav who was watching her bedroom from his car knew that once the lights were out she would come to the window and spend most of her night looking at the stars. This was what she used to do and watching her was what he did daily. Being a stickler to routine, she came to stand by the window. Hugging herself, with a slight hunched up shoulders he could clearly see a drop of glistening pearl from her eyes slide down the soft and smooth cheek.

Arnav who witnessed her controlled grief felt frustrated. He wanted her to be back at RM. He wanted her to come back to him. That was the only feasible solution. That was the only acceptable solution and anything other than that was not acceptable!

In this update we see that Arnav though he himself inflicted the wound on Khushi being haunted by her distress. He is unable to bear the coldness that had seeped into her otherwise warm, friendly eyes, a result of his action.

Khushi though pretends to be the usual, happy go lucky and Happiness personified in front of others, lets her hair down only when alone. She gives a vent to the distress only at night, while standing in front of her window. Watching the stars with eyes pooled with tears, she seeks solace from the stars that she believes to be her late parents.

This action of Khushi is daily observed by Arnav who too undergoes pain knowing that it was his actions that caused it.

Hence it is WORMWOOD a term that describes the painful experience or distress an action causes.

"You can't make someone feel good about themselves until you feel good about yourself" ~Robin S. Sharma

That's it from me. Hope you enjoy it!
