OS 2: Finding Khushi

Part 7

Section 1

Her phone rang.

Khushi opened one bleary eye, pulled his coat closer to her, and looked around. What was the noise? Oh'her phone...

She fumbled to take it.

"Hellooo!", she croaked, her open eye now closed.

"Khushi, where is your payal?", his urgency made his voice more husky than usual.

Khushi frowned. The stupid things people asked when you were asleep!

"Sleeping. Beside me. What else will she do at night? Do bhangra?", she yawned.

Arnav's mouth remained open for a few seconds before he caught on.

"Not your Jiji. Your payal. The one on your feet. Your Amma's payal''", he made it clear.

There was silence from the other side.

Her sleep left her as though it had never been. Her hand clenched around the phone as tears filled her eyes.

Arnav cut the call. He had got his answer from her silence.

Khushi lay on her side, weeping silently, taking care not to disturb her Jiji's sleep.

A shadow appeared at her open window. Her eyes widened. A thief? A thief! A scream rose in her throat.

She looked around, frantic. Anything to hit him with' Buaji's belan' Babuji's umbrella' Phuphaji's walking stick'.. Her eyes widened in hope. Yes! Phuphaji's walking stick'

She jumped out of bed, and ran to the corner of the room on fast but silent feet. She grabbed the old walking stick and ran to the window, hiding herself In the dark, holding the stick in position to crack one on the thief's head.

A leg' then the next leg came in through the window'.. Khushi gulped in fear. He Devi Maiyya!

A male body entered the room, his head slightly bent to enter through the window comfortably.

Khushi closed her eyes and lifted the walking stick up in the air to bring it down with full force on the intruder's head.

The next thing she knew, the stick was out of her hand, falling with a soft clatter on the ground, and she was pushed back against the wall by a hard, warm, male body against her soft one.

Khushi's eyes remained shut. The familiar scent of his body calmed her, and the feel of him against her took away the last of her senses'..

Panting, she opened her eyes.

His face was close to hers, its lean lines looking leaner and more dangerous in the dark...

She gulped. And opened her mouth to ask'.

He clamped his hand over her mouth, pressing her deeper into the wall, his chest as hard as a wall, his legs crowding hers''. She squirmed. He pressed deeper into her.

Khushi couldn't breathe. And the feel of him against her'' Her heart was thudding fit to kill her'.. and his heart was thudding loudly too. She could feel his heart beat'. Khushi swallowed, her mouth dry. She would die if she didn't get him off her'.

She bit his hand. He jumped back with a soft yelp.

"Sshhh'", Khushi said, placing her finger against his lips to silence him. "Jiji will wake up!"

Arnav glared at her, rubbing his hand.

She pushed him away. He moved away reluctantly.

"What are you doing here? Have you taken to patrolling Laxmi Nagar at night in your spare time? Making sure that your investment is safe?", she hissed.

Arnav stared at her. She had no idea how right she was'.
"Where the hell is your payal?", he bit out.

Khushi took a moment to swallow the lump in her throat.
"What does it matter to you?", she asked.

"Farak padta he, dammit!", he caught hold of her arms and shook her. "Where is your payal?"

She remained silent.

"Tell me, dammit! Did you sell it?" His eyes bore into hers in the dark.

Khushi shook him off. "It is my mother's payal, not your mother's. I can do whatever I want to do with it. I don't need your permission!"

Arnav caught hold of her shoulders and pulled her close to him. "Don't talk to me like that!"

Khushi glared at him and tried to free herself.

"Come out with me.", he ordered.

"Where?"

"To the moon.", he said, sarcasm filling the words.

"Acha! To the moon! I didn't know you went there frequently'", Khushi tried to match him.

"Fast.", he instructed.

Khushi pushed him away and stood her ground.

"OK. I will wake up your parents and Buaji. And your Jiji. Then we can take their permission and go out." He crossed his arms & cocked his head.

Khushi gasped. "Are you mad?"

He grabbed her arm and pulled her towards the window.

"Wait! Let me get my dupatta!", she protested.

Arnav rolled his eyes. "It is one in the morning! Who is going to be up to see you without the dupatta?"

"You! You are awake!", she grumbled as she went in search of her dupatta.

Arnav looked at her with intent eyes, but she was too preoccupied with searching for her dupatta without waking her Jiji.

Arnav walked closer to her bed, and began arranging her pillows under the blanket to make it look as though she were in bed. His hand halted half way through. What was his coat doing under her pillow? He pulled it out.

Khushi picked up her dupatta from the floor, and put it around her neck. She turned to leave to find him holding his coat in his hand and looking at her, a question in his eyes.

Time stood still. The evidence of her vulnerability to him was in his hands. And there was nothing she could do to throw him off track. They stood staring at each other, feeling their hearts gallop.

Finally, she said, "You wanted to go somewhere'?"

Arnav nodded. His fingers let go of the coat, leaving it to lie on her pillow. Grabbing her arm, he left the room through the window.

Smita,😊

Here is my interpretation to Part 7 section 1

Khushi opened her one eye in a haze of drowsiness, pulled the coat closer and looked around when her cell phone rang in the middle of the night.

She fumbled and took the call. As soon as she greeted, heard the husky voice asking her where her payal was. The voice was more deeper than usual. She frowned at the stupid things that people insisted on one answering while one was asleep!

She answered that Payal was sleeping beside her. Irritated by the question she asked with a yawn, what else would she be doing. Do bhangra? Arnav was surprised to hear her answer but soon caught on. He told her he was not talking about her sister but about the payal she wears on her ankles, her mother's payal. Hearing his question, Khushi was silent. She became wide awake. Her hand clenched around her phone as tears pooled in her eyes. The silence from her side gave him his answer. Khushi lay beside her sister with tears streaming down her face silently. She took care as not to wake her sister.

While she was mopping in tears she saw a shadow appear at her window. She became frantic. Thinking it to be a thief lurking, stifling the scream that arose in her throat she searched for something substantial to hit. Thinking about various items that would be handy Buaji's belan, Babuji's umbrella, Phuphaji's walking stick, she decided that Phuphaji's walking stick was the ideal. Quickly getting off the bed, with lithe stride grabbed the walking stick that was at the corner of the room and soft padded to the window, holding the stick in position to whack on thief's head. When the thief started to enter he placed his leg first and then the torso. Closing her eyes, invoking the name of her favored Goddess, she lifted the stick to hit the thief on his head when, instead of hitting the head it fell in soft clatter on the ground and she was backpedalled on to the wall with a hard male body flush against her soft one. Khushi's eyes remained shut. His special aroma was a soothing balm on her. The feel of him against her attacked her senses and made her pant for breath. While she opened her eyes she found his face close to hers, the play of the shadows made it appear sharper than what she had seen earlier in the day. He looked leaner and more dangerous. Her eyes hungry for his looks imbibed it all and stored it. She gulped and when she was about to ask him, he clamped his hand over her mouth, with his body pressed deeper into her. The more she struggled the harder he pressed her. She could hear her heart beat loudly in her ears and feel his heart beating frantically too. Finally unable to take the assault on her senses and needing the breath she bit his hand. With a soft yelp he jumped back. Khushi gestured him to be silent so as not to wake her sister. Arnav glared at her while he rubbed his hand. Pushing away the reluctant Arnav she asked him what he was doing there. Has he taken to patrolling Laxmi Nagar in his spare time at night to make sure his investment was safe? Listening to her, Arnav thought she had hit the mark with no idea that it was very much true. It was not the immovable asset he was patrolling for but one sweet, saucy bundle of five and a half foot that had the tendency to fall into his arms! Brushing aside his thoughts he asked her, where were her payals. Khushi who got a lump in her throat, at the mention of payal, as it was her mother's only thing she possessed in remembrance, swallowed and asked him why it should matter to him. Riled by her counter question, catching her by her arms, shaking her he said, that it does make a difference, Swearing under his breath, he continued asking where her payal was. Her answering silence made him swear once again and ask her did she sell it. She could feel the anger emanating from him even in the dark. Shrugging his hands off her she hissed at him, that it was her mother's and not his mother's possession. She could do whatever she wanted to with it and moreover his permission was not needed! Arnav catching her by her shoulders and pulling her close to him told her not to talk like that with him. Glaring at his audacity she tried to free herself from his grip! He ordered her to go out with him. Her query as to where he sarcastically told her that it was to moon that she had to accompany him. Not to be outdone, Khushi told him that it was fine by her, but she was not aware that it was often frequented by him. When he tried to rush her she stood there as though rooted to the ground. Crossing his arms and cocking his head he then said it was fine with him to wake her parents, her Buaji and her sister, seek their permission and take her out. Khushi who knew that he was capable of carrying out what he said, asked him had he gone mad. Without answering her he pulled her towards the window. Her protest to fetch her dupatta, had him roll his eyes and say, it is one a.m. and who would be there to see her without dupatta. Her answer 'you' had him observe her closely but she was earnestly searching for her dupatta without trying to waken her sister. Arnav going near her bed tried to arrange the pillows as her dummy sleeping under the blanket. His hand found his coat under her pillow. Pulling it out he looked at Khushi. Khushi having retrieved the dupatta and placed it around her neck turned to see Arnav holding his coat fished out from under her pillow. She saw the questioning look in his eyes. She stood rooted to the spot without having anything else to deflect him from the track. It was evident that he understood her vulnerability and that she was not as unmoved by his presence as she pretends to be. He now understood that she had similar feelings towards him as he has towards her but the rider was she would not acknowledge it to him, just like him. They stood staring at each other without a word but understanding a lot. Finally, she asked him whether he wanted to take her somewhere. Arnav nodded, leaving his coat on the pillow, grabbing her arm, he left through the window.

In this update Arnav calls Khushi after midnight to find out about her payal. But all he receives was silence making him probe further.

He goes to GH, climbs through window and has tussel with Khushi just to find out about the whereabouts of her payal. When asked all he gets from her is what does it matter to you?

He even seeks an explanation from her for keeping his coat under her pillow but doesn't get one. Only silence rules.

He searches for an explanation without much hope of her giving it. Hence the phrase, CAST ABOUT FOR fits in very well.

"There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you, and there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself"

~ Lemony Snicket, Horseradish: Bitter Truths You Can't Avoid

That's it from me. Hope you enjoy it.

res too!!

*edit*

I know its unrealistic for him to have gotten her payals now...
But it would have been so romantic to do tie them back, again, under the moonlight... Foolish me!! But I blame only you both!! šŸ˜› šŸ˜† šŸ˜†

Loved how Arnav had to see her and get her answer...

And also, I've officially started to hate the dialog, "Don't talk to me like that!"
I mean, sure, I use it too... 😳 šŸ˜‰ šŸ˜› But I hate it for Khushi's sake now... 🤔

Where's the next section now?!?!?!?!?! *rubs palms and waits for magic to happen and show me section 2* šŸ˜Ž
