OS 2: Finding Khushi

Part 10

Section 2

"Tan.. ta nan..ta nan..ta nan..ta.. nan..ta..nan..ta nan..ta.. nan...", Mami sang her detective tune as she came down the stairs, her pair of binoculars hanging around her neck. She was in full Baand mood, the pink goggles, the binoculars, and her green & yellow Benarsi sari making her look a spectacle.

"Maasi, what are you doing? Why are you wearing a pair of binoculars?", NK asked, scratching his head.

"Err..woh..NK Bitwaa, I bant (want) to see the sagai in jhoom (zoom) vijjon (vision).", Mami found an excuse.

NK stared at her.

Akash, NK, & Arnav, all dressed in dark blue-black sherwanis & formals, stood in the passage leading to the front door, inviting guests in.

Akash peered over NK's shoulder to see if Payalji had come for the function, and Arnav peeked over Akash's shoulder to see if Khushi had come. He had sent 2 cars to pick them up.

Every sense went into high alert mode as he saw Buaji at the door, pushing Babuji in his wheelchair. Amma in an orange saree, with the pallu draped over her head came next, leading a shy Payal in a red & green lehenga.

Arnav heard Akash's breath leave him in a whoosh, but he had no time to spare for him. He looked at the entrance. Where was Khushi?

She came in, slowly, reluctantly stepping into the house she had wanted to avoid at all cost. She was in a blue lehenga, with a pink & blue dupatta decorously pleated and pinned to cover her bosom & midriff.

Her hair was plaited, and jasmine flowers and pearls adorned it. She held a small bag in her hand, and stood at the fringes of the crowd, not seeking anybody's attention. Arnav stood staring at her, unable to take his eyes off her.

"Nannav, mere Bhai! Is it time for dinner? I am feeling very hungry!", said NK, rubbing his stomach.

Arnav heard & saw nothing except Khushi.

Nani, Di, Mamaji, & Mami welcomed the Guptas into their home. They hugged each other, and the Raizada ladies & Mamaji blessed Payal.

Buaji stared at Mami's binoculars.

"Woh.. woh.. I want to see the sagai clearly!", Mami explained.

Buaji frowned. Was Payaliyaa's Sassumma mad?

"And it ijj the latest phasion!", Mami declared.

"Hai Re Nandkisore!", Buaji whispered, smiling at Mami's ridiculous getup.

Nani & Di latched on to Khushi.

"Khussi Bitiyaa!", Nani exclaimed, hugging her. Khushi smiled slightly at the elderly lady who had shown her nothing but kindness.

"Khushiji!", Anjaliji hugged her. Khushi smiled. "Come in! You know the way."

Khushi nodded. Where was the Rakshas? It would be too much to hope that he would leave his home and go to the Himalayas to meditate just because she didn't want to see him. And that too on his brother's sagai! Khushi sighed.

She watched Nani & Di teasing Jiji about how eager Akash was to see her, and smiled slightly.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw the lean & straight figure of Arnav Singh Raizada standing next to Akashji & another man.

Khushi, remember what you decided to do. Blind, deaf, & dumb, she told herself.

She deliberately turned her head away to see Mami staring at her through the binoculars. What was wrong with Mamiji? Had disappointment over her son's undesirable alliance turned her mad?

Arnav frowned. Why was Khushi not looking at him?

He felt somebody's eyes on him. His Mami was staring at him through the binoculars.

"What the!" left his lips.

Akash pulled Arnav & NK to join the crowd.

After greeting Buaji, Amma, Babuji, & Payal, Arnav introduced NK to them.

"This is NK, our cousin bhai from Australia."

All smiled at NK.

"NK, this is Payal's Amma & Babuji.", Arnav introduced them.

NK folded his hands politely.

"Jeeyat raho, babua!", Amma blessed him. Babuji nodded. NK frowned. Wasn't he alive?

"This is Payal's Buaji.", Arnav said. His eyes were on Khushi. Khushi looked elsewhere.

"Hai re Nandkisore, you have come all the way from Australia to attend your brother's marriage!", Buaji exclaimed.

"How did you know that my name is Nand Kisore, Buaji?", NK asked, astonished.

All laughed.

"This is Payal.", Arnav said, looking at Khushi. She was fiddling with the fringes of her dupatta.

"I know. I know. Akash's ankletji!", NK smiled and moved to hug her, but Arnav caught hold of his arm.

"Akash will hug her when the time comes. You find some body else to hug.", Arnav whispered in his ear.

NK nodded.

"And this is Khushi, Payal's sister.", Arnav introduced her, trying to meet her eyes.

Khushi smiled at NK, folding her hands in greeting. She totally ignored Arnav.

"Is your sagai over?", asked NK.

Khushi stared at him, and said, "No."

NK beamed. "My sagai too is not over." He turned to Arnav and asked him, "Can I hug her, Nannav?"

Khushi burst out laughing as Arnav fumed. NK looked at both of them, perplexed, wondering what he had said to infuriate Nannav.

Anjali had arranged a pooja before the sagai. All the family members and the guests sat on mats laid on the floor, waiting for the priest to start the pooja.

Akash and Payal were seated near the havan kund. Amma sat near Babuji's wheelchair. Feeling Arnavji coming close to her, Khushi darted between the guests, and sat down beside Buaji.

"Kaa hua, Titliyaa?", Buaji asked. "Why are you panting as though you have run a mile?"

"Nothing, Buaji.", smiled Khushi, scooting closer to her.

Arnav sat down behind her, watching her with hooded eyes.

What was he doing here? He didn't believe in God. What was he doing at a pooja? Just her luck! Khushi tried to calm her choppy breath.

Mami, Di, & Nani watched Arnav & Khushi with eagle eyes.

"Chotey! You are going to join us for the pooja?", Anjali asked, hiding a smile.

Arnav fidgeted. "You may need something... I should be here.. Akash may need help."

"That is so considerate of you, Chotey!", Nani laughed.

Arnav looked at the back of Khushi's choli. The low neck, the dori, the creamy skin... the fresh flowers in her long hair' their sweet fragrance...

Khushi turned to listen to something her Buaji said.

Her heavy earring... he hoped it didn't hurt her ear. The tie of her choker, the curve of her neck'. He memorised every line of her body that he could see...

Khushi squirmed. Why was he staring at her back? It felt as though he were untying her dori and running his fingers over her bare skin.. She shuddered.

NK sat down by Arnav.

"Khushiji!", he called.

Khushi turned her head, trying her best not to look at Arnavji.

"With you here, bahut moza aayegaa at this sagai."

Khushi looked at his feet. What had socks got to do with sagai? Then she caught on. Laughing, she said, "Maza, not moza."

"Maza, maza...", NK repeated to be certain.

Both of them giggled like a pair of kids. Arnav stared at them, seeing all his plans toppling over like a ton of bricks.

"I will call you Nanheji!", Khushi declared.

"You can call me anything you want, Khushiji!", NK said, smiling.

Nannav grit his teeth.

The pooja was finally over and the prasad distributed by Anjaliji. Soon it would be time for the sagai.

Khushi looked at the kitchen with longing in her eyes. She badly wanted a glass of water. She was parched.

She looked for Hari Prakashji. She saw him arranging chairs to seat the guests. It was no use calling him!

But how could she go to the kitchen? What if the Rakshas followed her?

Maybe she could take Nanheji with her. She looked around for him. He was nowhere to be seen.

She looked at Arnavji. He was standing with his face turned away from her, talking to some men in suits. This was her chance. She may not get another opportunity.

 She darted into the kitchen.

There was no one there. Khushi heaved a great sigh of relief. For a few seconds, she could let go of her facade, her tension, her pretense...

She drew a glass of water from the pot, brought it to her lips, and drank deeply. She filled the next glass and drank half of it before she felt someone standing behind her.

Maybe Hari Prakashji had come in... She turned towards him with a smile to stand petrified.

Arnav Singh Raizada was standing behind her, his eyes burning into hers.

Her hand with the glass of water trembled.

He caught it, his fingers curling over hers to steady them. He brought the glass to his lips and sipped.

She tried to pull it back. The glass had been used by her' he should use a fresh one... But his fingers pulled her hand closer to his lips, and he drank all the water in the glass.

Khushi swallowed.

"What are you up to, Khushi?", he asked, his husky voice raking over her nerves like nails on a black board.

She frowned. Had he noticed that she was avoiding him?

"Are you trying to make me jealous?", Arnav bit out.

Khushi frowned at his preposterous question.

Forgetting that she had decided to be blind, deaf, & dumb, she opened her mouth to blast him.

They heard someone come into the kitchen.

Both of them stiffened. As Khushi tried to leave, Arnav caught hold of her arm and pulled her into the store room, closing the door behind them.

"What the!", Khushi exclaimed.

Arnav placed his finger on her lips to silence her. In the dim light, they looked at each other.

He slowly withdrew his finger from her lips, taking the chance to caress the plump curves. Khushi jerked away.

Arnav peeped into the kitchen.

Mami stood looking around, her binoculars in hand.

"Bhere did they go?, she asked herself. She looked in the cabinets, behind the stove, in between the bins placed on the cooking platform, in the basket of vegetables waiting to be cooked...

"Bhere ever you go, you cannot escape Manorama Baand!", she said, firing an imaginary pistol, and blowing the residue from her fingers.

Mami turned to look at Laxmi who was chewing a bunch of palak from the basket.

"Did you see them, you chewer of palak?"

Laxmi bleated.

Mami snorted, and left the kitchen, walking her billi walk.

Arnav looked at Khushi. She gulped.

Smita,😊

Here is my interpretation for Part 10, Section 2.

Taking up the investigation on the assigned  day, the day of Sagai, Mami descended the staircase humming a tune that usually would be the back ground music, while a detective enters the picture frame. Dressed to kill (?!) in a Benarasi silk sari of green and yellow, her pink goggles strategically placed on her head, slinging binoculars, Mami was in a Baand mood! She was a unique piece never to be found anywhere else.

NK who met her asked why was she having a pair of binoculars. He was trying to decipher what might be the secret behind this avatar of his Maasi. Her excuse was that she wanted to see the Sagai in bigger than life size. Akash, NK and Arnav, resplendent in sherwani's and formal wear in the hues of midnight blue stood at the entrance foyer greeting the guests. Akash and Arnav were peeping every now and then to see whether Payal and Khushi had come. Arnav had sent two cars to collect them. As soon as he saw Buaji, Arnav's senses were put on high alert. Buaji came in pushing Babuji in his wheel chair. Amma in an orange saree with the pallu draped over her head came next along with Payal whose cheeks were vying with the red and green lehenga she wore. Arnav heard Akash heave a deep breath, but he didn't have time to look at his brother. His eyes were busy searching for Khushi at the entrance. She had not yet turned up! As he was wondering about her she reluctantly stepped into the house that she wanted to avoid at all cost. She was dressed in a blue lehenga with pink blue dupatta tastefully pleated and pinned to cover herself. Jasmine flowers and pearls adorning her plaited hair enhanced her beauty. With a small bag in her hand she stood at the fringes of the crowd trying to merge. Arnav just couldn't take his eyes off the beauty in front of him.

NK asking the time for dinner went unheeded. His whole being was attuned exclusively to Khushi. Nani, Di, Mamaji and Mami welcomed the Guptas' into their home.

The elders greeted each other.  Raizada ladies and Mamaji blessed the soon to-be-bride. Buaji was amazed to see Mami's binoculars. Mami explained that she wanted to see the sagai clearly and that's the reason she totes the Binoculars along. Hearing her explanation, Buaji frowned and thought Manorama had lost her marbles. Buaji's expression made Mami say that it was the latest fashion, knowing fully well that Madhumati would not be aware of anything concerned with fashion. But Madhumati though not in touch with fashion had enough common sense to distinguish between fashion and absurdity. She invoked the name of her favorite deity for having to witness such ludicrous behavior.

Nani and Di tagged along Khushi. Enveloping her in a warm hug, Nani exclaimed her name oozing with love and happiness. The elderly lady was extremely happy to see her. Khushi smiled at her for Nani had always shown her nothing but kindness. Hugging her, Anjali welcomed her and told her that as she was well versed with the house, she could make herself comfortable. Khushi nodded but stayed tongue-tied. She wondered where Arnav was? She felt it would be too much to hope that he had took himself off, away from all these functions, just because she didn't want to see him. Can she ever hope of him skipping his brother's Sagai? Just thinking at the improbability she heaved a huge breath just to fortify herself. Watching Nani and Di tease her sister as to how eagerly Akash had been waiting to get just a glimpse of her, a smile played on Khushi's lips. While looking ahead she noticed Arnav Singh Raizada standing next to Akash and another man. Khushi reminded herself of what she had decided - Royal Ignore. While she deliberately turned her head away she noticed that Mami was staring at her through her binoculars. She wondered, what was wrong with Mamiji? Has this alliance alienated her so much?

Meanwhile Arnav frowned why Khushi was not looking at him at all. Then he felt prickles as though somebody was observing him. Seeing his Mami staring at him through the binoculars he swore under his breath. Akash pulled Arnav and NK to join the rest. After greeting the elders and Payal, Arnav introduced NK to them as their cousin from Australia. All smiled at NK. Then Arnav introduced him to Payal's Amma and Babuji. When NK folded his hands politely in greeting Babuji nodded and Amma blessed him to live (long). But NK took it literally and wondered whether he wasn't alive to elicit such a blessing! Next he was introduced to Buaji. While introducing Arnav's eyes were on Khushi but she was looking everywhere but him. Buaji exclaimed praising her deity Nandkisore, that he had come all the way from Australia to attend his brother's wedding! NK being NK obtuse in his cute ways asked with astonishment how did she know that his name was Nand Kisore. All laughed at his question. Then Arnav introduced Payal to him. Arnav observed that khushi was fiddling with the edge of her dupatta. NK told him that he knew she was Akash's Ankletji and moved to hug her. Catching hold of him, Arnav whispered it was not done. Only Akash could do it. And he better find somebody else to hug! NK bobbed his head in agreement. Finally Arnav introduced Khushi as Payal's sister, trying to meet her eyes. Evading his eyes, she smiled at NK and greeted him with folded hands. NK asked whether her Sagai was over. Khushi was stunned to hear such a question but recovering said no. Hearing her answer, NK beamed and said his Sagai too was not over. Turning to Arnav he asked whether he could hug her? While Arnav was seething with anger, Khushi burst out in peals of laughter and NK was at sea, wondering what he had said to vex Arnav. Arnav never thought his very advice would come to haunt him so quickly!

Anjali had arranged for a pooja, before the Sagai. All were seated around the havan kund. Khushi sensing Arnav approaching her rushed to sit by her Buaji making Buaji ask what happened to her. Khushi  smiled at her and said everything was fine. Arnav found a seat behind her and sat watching her with hooded eyes. Khushi was left wondering as to what had happened to Laad Governar, to be sitting for the pooja? What was he who didn't believe in God doing there? She thought things are happening just true to her luck! The never ending torture of his presence that too right behind her back! Calming herself she sat beside her Buaji. The sleuth Trio, watched Arnav and Khushi with eagle eyes. Anjali, with a naughty smile and twinkling eyes, knowing fully well still asked Arnav would he be gracing the pooja with his presence? Arnav  knowing that it was against his nature squirmed inside, but told her that he would, as he thought that they might need something and Akash might need his help. Nani, with a laugh lurking around her lips, appreciated his effort by saying that was very considerate of him. Arnav looked at Khushi's back. When his eyes noted her choli, it moved on to the low neck, the dori, the creamy skin and the fragrance of the fresh flowers in her long silky voluptuous strands of hair. As Khushi turned sideways to listen to her Buaji saying something, he noted her heavy earring and hoped it didn't hurt her ear. He etched each and every line of her body line in his mind. Khushi sensing that she was being scrutinized was irked. She wondered why he was staring at her back. She felt as though he was untying her dori and running his fingers along her back and quivered.

NK sat besides Arnav and called out to Khushi. Khushi turned her head towards him taking care as not to glance at Arnav. NK said that, with her there, they would have a lot of moza at this sagai. Khushi looking at his feet wondered what had his socks got to do with the Sagai. Suddenly it struck her he meant maza fun and not moza sock. When she corrected him he agreed with her that was what he meant. Both giggled like a pair of kids and hit off well. There started their friendship. Arnav felt as though somebody had pulled a rug from under his feet. All his plans fell like blocks toppling in the game of dominoes. He felt all his dreams were built on a house of cards which toppled with just a gush of breeze. He heard Khushi telling NK that she would call him Nanheji and NK giving her carte blanche to call as she wishes. All Arnav could do was grit his teeth and just chew his anger!

The pooja was over and Anjali distributed the Prasad. The time of Sagai was fast approaching.

Khushi, who felt parched was longing for a drink of water. She saw Hari Prakash was otherwise engaged. She felt it was better not to disturb as he was arranging the chairs. She wondered how to sneak into kitchen as she knew if she goes there Laad Governar would corner her. She thought of asking NK to accompany her and searched for him. But he was nowhere to be seen. She looked at Arnav and found him talking to some men in formal wear. Seeing that he would be engrossed in his talk and that she may not get another such good opportunity, she quietly slipped into the kitchen. The coast was all clear. Heaving a deep sigh of relief, thinking that she need not put on the mask for a few seconds she let go of her tension, her pretense. Filling water into a long glass, she drank deeply. Still wanting, she filled some more and was half way through the drink, when she felt some presence behind her. Thinking it to be HP she turned with a smile that froze.

Arnav Singh Raizada had succeeded in cornering her alone! His eyes were devouring her and burning into her. His look shocked her and the glass in her hand shook. With a quick movement he steadied it curling his fingers over hers. He brought the glass to his lips and sipped from it. She tried to pull it back, thinking that the glass had been used by her and he ought to use a fresh one. But his fingers pulled her hand closer to his lips and drank to the last drop, all the while his eyes never wavering from hers. Khushi swallowed. He asked her what was she up to? His husky voice raked over her taunt nerves like a scrape with a rasp. She scowled thinking had he caught on to her trying to avoid him? When Arnav bit out seething with anger asking her, whether she was trying to make him jealous Khushi was stunned to hear such a ridiculous question.

"Simply minding one's own business is more               offensive than being intrusive. Without ever saying   a word one can make a person feel less-than"

                                      ~ Criss Jami

As they heard someone enter the kitchen both stiffened. Khushi tried to pull out of his hold and leave, but Arnav catching her arm pulled her aside into the store and conveniently closed the door behind him. His action made Khushi use his swearing words, What the!

Arnav placed his finger on her lips to silence her. In the dim light they looked at one another. While slowly withdrawing his finger from her lips, not the one to let go his chance, he caressed the plump curves with the firm pad of his finger tip. Khushi jerked at the shock she received from his gesture.

Arnav peeped into the kitchen to see Mami looking around with her binoculars in hand. She was talking to herself. She was asking where they disappeared off to. She searched the cabinets, behind the stove, in between the bins on the platform and even in the basket of vegetables waiting to be cooked! When she couldn't find them she announced that, wherever they went, they wouldn't be able to escape Manorama Baand, fired an imaginary pistol and blew on her fingers as though dusting away the remanents of the  gunpowder. Turning aside to  Laxmi who was munching a bunch of palak from the basket, by addressing her as you chewer of palak, she asked whether she saw the two of them. When in answer Laxmi bleated, Mami snorted and left the kitchen doing her bird walk. (I know, I know you wrote cat walk!)

Arnav who was closeted in the store with Khushi looked at her. His look made her gulp.

This update is about being EVADE.

In the beginning we see Manorama Raizada evade questions in her Baand Avataar not to give out her real intention of carrying binoculars with her in the house.

Then we see Khushi Kumari Gupta trying to evade from being cornered by Arnav Singh Raizada.

Finally, we see both Arnav and Khushi evading Manorama from being seen together.

It is a Cat and Mouse game that is going on.

That's it from me. Hope you enjoy it.
