She let go of his shirt and grabbed his collar, pulling him closer.
"I thought you were only mine Randhir," she croaked, as fresh tears filled her eyes. "The thought of being with Parth that way makes me feel disgusted and you did that so easily?"
"Because you're better than me," he replied, stroking her cheek softly. "I'm sorry Sanyukta."
Suddenly a realization hit her. Randhir had never been able to commit to Vidhushi, and yet she had been able to give Parth that kind of commitment. Perhaps it was easier, because a girl's nature was such that commitments meant more than physical unions. For a boy, maybe meaningless sex was easy.
Sanyukta didn't understand why she was complaining anymore - they had broken up, so he had the right to go and sleep with anyone he wanted to, and she had the right to commit to someone else. And they had both done exactly that. They had both hit the other one where it hurt the most.
"I'm sorry Randhir," she said hoarsely, meaning every bit of her apology. "I am marrying Parth. I'm so sorry."
Randhir held her face in his hands and looked into her eyes, a serious expression on his face - his eyes were so intense that she nearly lowered her gaze.
"Sanyukta, you are not marrying Parth," he stated firmly. "I won't let you sacrifice your happiness like that."
"Randhir, my happiness was with you," she whispered, "But when you left me you took away all possibilities of me being happy again."
"Please don't say that Sanyukta," he said softly. "Please. You can be happy again, you have to be."
Then she broke down again and placed her head on his chest. He started to caress her hair, trying to bring her as much comfort as he could.
She let go of his shirt and wrapped her arms around him, holding on tightly.
This was what home felt like - this had always been the place she would run to five years ago when she was upset, angry, sad, or happy - she had always found herself in his arms. This time she cried - she cried her heart out, she let her emotions stain his shirt, and he held her protectively, caressing her hair, silently telling her that he was there for her, speaking genuine promises of the future. Her heart struggled to believe him, but this drowning heart had given up hopes of ever finding air again.
"Keep fighting," Randhir murmured into her ear.
How could she tell him she was finally letting gravity pull her down? How could she tell him that even though she was suffocated and her lungs had filled up with everything but oxygen, it was still a much better alternative to what fighting had given her?
But she didn't tell him. Because she stopped fighting. She let the universe pull her down. She decided to see how much deeper it would take her before it finally let her go.
Reluctantly taking a step back, she wiped her tears with the back of her hand. She wanted to run into his arms again, her save haven, but they had to begin what they had come here to do.
"Randhir," she said, closing her eyes at the feel of his name on her tongue. "I have to - we have to I mean, we have to do this. So let's - let's not waste anymore time."
"Are you sure?" Randhir asked her, looking concerned. "We could do this tomorrow too."
He took a step towards her, but she took a step back for reasons unknown to her. She couldn't willingly run into his arms and create another trap for herself. But she had to, and she had no more energy in her to fight with what the universe wanted.
"I'm sure," she told him with a sad smile.
Her back hit the wall as his fingers rested on her jawline. Her eyes closed and her heart started to beat even faster. He traced her jawline softly with the tips of his fingers and she could feel his face moving closer and closer to hers. Her breath caught in her throat as she felt his lips softly touch her forehead.
She placed her hands on his chest and pushed him back slightly, something feeling amiss. She couldn't do this and she didn't even know why.
"Sorry," she mumbled. "Randhir, I don't know why it isn't easy for me."
He looked at her with a pained expression - he was hurt for her, he was her companion even in this. When she struggled, he took it as a burden on his own shoulders. When she suffered, he shared the pain with her.
He took one of her hands gently in his and lead her to the bed.
"Come here," he told her and seated her down, pressing his hands on her shoulders.
Sitting down beside her, he took her hand in his again and rubbed it softly.
"Sanyukta, if you want to spend all night talking, we can," he told her with a small smile. "If you want to be comfortable with me, however long it takes, I will stay awake with you."
Her lips quivered as she heard how genuine he was. She wanted to pull him close, and just tell him to take her right now. She wanted to tell him that she wanted him, she really did, but her mind stopped her.
"Okay," she told him. "I just... I just want my mind to calm down. It's telling me if I do this, I'll get attached to you again."
He looked at her, as if he was searching for something inside her eyes.
"Sanyukta, you're not attached to me already?" he asked, sighing.
He was right. She was already attached... how could she fall more attached than this?
"But I'm not doing the right thing with Parth," she murmured, ready to bear another taunt from him.
To her surprise, that taunt didn't come. Instead, he took one of his hands off hers and wrapped it around her back, pulling her close. She rested her head on his shoulder as he rubbed her arm soothingly.
"Doesn't he know?" Randhir asked.
"Yes, but he's hurt," Sanyukta whispered. "He's been there for me for so long Randhir."
Parth engulfed her in a hug as she continued to sob.
"Sanyukta, it's okay," Parth told her soothingly. "Don't worry, I'm here for you."
"We hid our relationship in FITE, and now I'm pregnant and I sent him DNA reports, but he still won't accept the baby, but he loves me so much, I know he does," she told him, sobbing. "I don't know why. Why won't he accept it? He doesn't trust me. He doesn't think he's the father. He thinks, he thinks you're the father!"
"Sanyukta, I'm here for you, I told you. We'll talk to him together and get this sorted out. Don't cry," Parth told her, comfortingly.
"Was this how it felt when Arpita left you?" Sanyukta asked him, referring to his dead girlfriend.
"Sanyukta," Parth muttered. "You know I don't like to talk about her."
"I know Parth, I just need something to relate to. I'm sorry," she told him, knowing she was probably being irrational. "But... let's try to get Randhir back, okay? Help me please. I love him so much... I don't know how to live without him."
"I'll contact him myself," Parth told her reassuringly. "I'll talk to him. You don't worry."
She smiled at him, suddenly feeling calm. Randhir couldn't be away from her for too long could he? He would surely come back to her.
She spent five years with that hope. He didn't contact her, nor did he reply to her texts, and he didn't even speak to Parth when Parth tried to talk to him. She even tried to visit him a few times, but all her efforts went in vain. He refused to see her.
Eventually, she gave up too and gave birth to Shraddha with Parth by her side. Parth helped her take care of Shraddha by moving in with her, even when her own parent's had disowned her. Every night she would sleep with her and Randhir's picture. She would look longingly at her phone. She desperately wanted to text Randhir a picture of Shraddha but her bitterness held her back, bitterness that he hadn't accepted his daughter. More than the fact that he hadn't trusted her, the fact that he abandoned her when she needed him the most hurt her.
Those five years had been the loneliest five years of her life, despite the fact that she had a daughter she loved a lot, despite the fact that she found a supporter, a true friend.
The void in her heart that Randhir had left her with was never filled.
Suddenly she looked up at him with nothing but fear in her eyes - in the midst of her emotions, she completely forgot that the reason she was doing all this was because of Shraddha.
"Randhir, Shraddha," she whispered fearfully, removing her head from his shoulder. "I can't lose her."
"It'll be okay," Randhir told her firmly, removing his hand from her arm. "Everything will be okay."
"Randhir, you don't understand," Sanyukta said urgently, her voice getting louder, "I can't lose her. She's my life Randhir. I can't... I can't!"
And suddenly it felt as if someone was strangling her and she was fighting to breathe. Tears flowed down her cheeks as she yelled, "Shraddha! Randhir, I can't lose her!"
He turned around to face her and gripped her shoulders tightly, pulling her towards him, causing her body to crash hard into his chest. He hugged her tightly and her arms wrapped around him too, her face resting in the crook of his neck. She inhaled his scent as he rubbed her back, comforting her until she stopped crying, until she was too lost in the moment to remember why she was doing this.
Then ever so slowly, he pulled back, wiped away her tears and leaned towards her.
"I - I can't lose -" she whispered weakly, trying to remember why she was here, but her words were vacant of emotion now, almost as if she was struggling to remember the reason. "- you. I can't lose you."
"I love you," he whispered, and she could feel his breath on her lips.
"I love you too," she told him, her voice barely audible, her eyes closing.
Then before he could close the gap between their lips, she had placed one hand on the nape of his neck, the other one on his back, and had crashed her lips against his hungrily, trying to feel all that she had missed in the last five years.
I hope you enjoyed the chapter! Since University is about to start, updates will be less frequent, but still regular. I will try to reply to all of your comments, but due to getting so many comments on two different stories, I can't guarantee that I'll get time to reply. If you don't want to comment keeping this in mind, that's completely fine and you aren't obligated to!
Next chapter is the chapter you've all been waiting for. 😆
