Leaning against the door, she fell to a heap on the ground and sobbed - she knew that Randhir knew. He knew that she wanted to be with him... but he himself wasn't going to let her come back to him so easily.
What made it worse was that her heart and mind were in a war - seemingly a never-ending one. Her heart ached at the prospect of being away from Randhir, but at the same time her mind told her that Parth was the right one for her.
Perhaps Randhir's heart and mind said the same thing... they always had that connection. They felt in pairs, there was never a moment of singularity between them. Even when they had separated, they felt the same pain, shared the same heartache. It was always the same.
She took out her phone and dialled his number with shaky fingers. How could she tell him not to do this when her own mind was screaming that this was wrong? How was it possible for her heart and mind to both reach a mutual agreement? Why did this situation have to be so complicated?
Even Shraddha didn't want to associate herself with Randhir anymore. Why did he have to make himself look like a villain in front of his own daughter?
Then suddenly she was angry. Angry at everyone - at him, at Parth, at herself, and even at Shraddha. Why did the world have to interfere with everything she did?
She cancelled the call. No. She wouldn't talk to him. If he had already made up his mind, then so had she. Maybe for once, she ought to listen to her mind. But still, her heart was too strong to ignore.
As soon as Shraddha had wiped away her tears earlier and claimed that Randhir never loved her, she had run to her own room, and Sanyukta knew that Parth had already gone to her to console her. Parth loved Shraddha a lot, like she was his own daughter.
Randhir had walked out of the house without saying a word to Sanyukta, and she had sat on the floor, trying to hold back her sobs. Once Randhir had left, and neither of them had looked back at the other one, she had run to her room and closed the door. And now she was here.
She closed her eyes and touched her lips softly, feeling Randhir's lips there. He had kissed her just this morning. They had been intimate just today. How could she forget all of that?
Sanyukta knew that this was wrong, but she was starting to hope that she wasn't pregnant yet... just so she could feel that closeness and intimacy with Randhir again. She wanted to curse herself for even thinking this way, because her and Randhir weren't the only one who this would affect - there were two members of the same household whom her decisions would affect. But still, she craved to feel Randhir's body against hers again.
Picking herself up, she quietly walked to Shraddha's room and saw that she was sleeping. Kissing her daughter's forehead softly, she left the room and found Parth.
"Sanyukta, if you aren't ready for this, we don't have to get married," Parth said as soon as she entered his room. "I just didn't want you going through what you did when you were pregnant with Shraddha."
"No Parth," Sanyukta said with a sad smile. "I'm ready. I am ready to marry you anytime you ask me to."
Parth held on to her shoulder with one hand firmly, in a comforting manner.
"I hope everything went well between you and Randhir," Parth told her, looking her straight in the eye.
"Yeah," Sanyukta said, forcing herself to smile. "I hope that it's successful."
"It will be, don't worry... there's still time," Parth said with a positive smile.
She nodded and turned around to leave the room.
"Good night Parth," she told him. "I'm going to sleep early tonight."
"Good night Sanyukta. Sleep well," Parth told her.
Sanyukta walked to Shraddha's room and rubbed her daughter's belly affectionately with one hand, while dialing Randhir's number with her other one. He picked up immediately.
"Sanyukta?" he asked. "Is everything okay?"
"No," she croaked, succumbing to her emotions. "No Randhir, nothing's okay."
"What happened?" he asked.
"Please meet me Randhir, please," she whispered, feeling tears start to fall from her eyes. "Please."
She heard him hesitating on the other end of the line for a moment.
"I don't think that's a good idea Sanyukta," he told her.
"Please Randhir. Tell me where you are. I'll come to you," she said desperately. "I need to see you."
"But Sanyukta, what happened?" he asked.
"I'll tell you when I see you," she told him quickly.
How could she tell him over the phone that she already missed him? How could she say that she wanted to be with him, that she wanted to hug him, to kiss him, to just be with him? How could she tell him that she didn't even know why she wasn't okay, because the reason was beyond anything she had ever imagined.
And more than anything else, how could she tell him that she fell in love with him again, and this time she was scared that she fell even harder than the first time around?
"Okay," she said, feeling her heart leap when he agreed to meet her. All of a sudden, her body was filled up with warmth, and a smile had replaced her frown.
She hung up the phone and ran to her wardrobe. She flipped through all of her outfits, before picking out a simple navy blue dress. The dress was a spaghetti strapped knee-length summer dress.
Running to her bathroom, she hopped in the shower. She wanted to look her best today. She didn't let her hair get wet, because she knew that it wouldn't have enough time to dry.
She even went to the lengths of finding her sexiest lingerie and putting that on underneath her dress. The thought of Randhir's reaction on seeing that made her blush.
Applying some light makeup to her face, she heard her phone vibrate. Looking down at it, her face paled when she saw so many missed calls. She had completely lost track of time while getting ready for Randhir. It had already been over 35 minutes since Randhir and her had spoken.
She picked up her phone breathlessly.
"I'm sorry Randhir! I'm coming down. Give me five minutes. Sorry!" she said quickly, and hung up before she even let him speak.
Applying some clear gloss to her lips, she slid on heels that matched her dress, picked up her purse, her keys, her phone, kissed Shraddha's forehead softly and left the room with the door open.
Pausing outside the door, she wondered if she should go back in and get a cardigan because it was chilly outside. Then she shook her head with a soft smile, remembering that she was going to be with Randhir - he would not let her get cold. The thought made her burn with excitement.
Parth, I have to go somewhere...leaving now, please be with Shraddha, she texted, feeling bad that she didn't tell him where she was going. As soon as she heard a creak from Parth's room, indicating that he was about to go to Shraddha's room and be with Shraddha, Sanyukta slid off her heels, picked them up in her hands and quietly tiptoed down, not wanting Parth to see her like this. If he saw her like this, he would know she was going to meet Randhir and was excited about it. It would needlessly hurt him.
Leaving the house and locking the door, she slipped on her heels again and looked down shyly as she approached Randhir's car and sat in the passenger seat. She didn't look at him, but could feel his gaze on her, looking her up and down.
"Sanyukta..." Randhir finally said, his voice soft, but contained. "Why did you want to see me?"
She looked up at him, her eyes stopping at his lips for a moment.
"I... I..." she started, but couldn't continue. Why were the words getting stuck in her throat, and why was she feeling these weird sensations in her stomach? Why did she want to jump onto his lap and kiss him senselessly?
He started the engine before reversing from the driveway and driving. Sanyukta didn't ask him where they were going - nor did she care. She just felt delighted to be next to him, momentarily forgetting the world.
"I would take you for coffee, but it's almost 10 at night... most places are closed. Have you eaten yet?" he asked.
She shook her head, still struggling to speak.
She wondered why he wasn't asking her to answer his earlier question about why she wanted to see him. Perhaps he had already figured it out.
"Okay then, let's get something to eat, and we'll talk while eating, then I'll take you back home," he told her, watching her reaction from the corner of his eye.
She felt herself pout - she put in all this effort to look nice for him. He didn't compliment her once, nor did he seem to want to spend time with her... it was almost like he was taking her to eat because she had pressured him into seeing her. All he wanted to do was get rid of her.
But she sat there silently. She decided that whatever she would do, she would do later on.
He drove them around and Sanyukta sat there silently. Finally, he stopped outside a hotel. The chaffeur came to him immediately and Randhir gave him his key to park his car.
"Come on," he said to Sanyukta.
She looked at the hotel with a small smile - if she could spend the night with him here, she would be more than happy. She opened her door and walked beside Randhir until they entered the restaurant of the hotel.
As they took their seats, Randhir opened the menu, as Sanyukta just looked at him with admiration.
She had already decided to tell her mind to get lost - right now, she wanted to live in the moment, she wanted to feel the blissful feeling she could only feel around Randhir.
As Randhir placed an order with the waiter, he glanced at Sanyukta quickly, as she still continued to look at him, mesmerized, before he ordered for her too. Sanyukta wasn't paying attention to what he ordered, nor did she care. She was just glad to be with him right now.
When the waiter left, Randhir faced Sanyukta and smiled. Today, he had a bit of stubble on his face, and Sanyukta didn't mind. In fact, the thought of his stubble on her skin turned her on.
She responded to his smile by smiling back - it was almost a natural reaction, something she didn't have to even think about.
"So why did you want to see me?" he asked her.
She felt her cheeks burn and she looked down.
"Randhir... I... I... I think we should try again," she told him, after mustering up some courage. "I mean... the more times we try, the higher the chances..."
That was an excuse and she was sure that Randhir knew too. He always read her so well.
"I think the chances are pretty good already," he told her lightly. "We could see after two weeks if we were successful and then we could decide what we need to do accordingly."
"No!" Sanyukta nearly yelled. She looked around and lowered her voice. "I mean Randhir, there's no harm in... in trying again and again until we hit the two week mark, just to improve our chances."
"But Sanyukta, this much closeness is never a good idea," Randhir warned. "You won't want to leave me."
Idiot, I already don't want to leave you, Sanyukta thought bitterly.
Before she could respond, the waiter brought them their food. They ate in silence. Sanyukta secretly wanted Randhir to feed her, but she didn't push it.
As soon as Randhir paid the bill, they both got up. He started to walk to the exit of the hotel, but Sanyukta grabbed his wrist to stop him, feeling her skin tingle at the skin to skin contact.
She let go of his wrist and walked beside him. Randhir started to walk, and Sanyukta followed him out. Then unexpectedly, Randhir slid his arm around her arm and laced his fingers through hers. She thought her heart stopped beating. She tightly gripped his hand in return, looking at him in amazement.
"Sir, should I get your car?" the chaffeur asked, but Randhir shook his head.
"I'll get it myself," Randhir said, and took the keys from the chaffeur.
Giving the chaffeur a tip, he lead Sanyukta to the parking lot. She shivered slightly from the cold. Noticing this, Randhir removed his hand from hers and wrapped it around her shoulder, rubbing it.
"Who told you to wear this when you knew it was going to be cold?" he asked her. "Sanyukta, use your brain."
"Sorry," she mumbled, looking down.
She stopped in her tracks and Randhir turned around, looking confused. Before even she could comprehend what she was doing, she had thrown her arms around Randhir and pressed her face deep into his chest, letting herself get intoxicated by his scent. Randhir's arms found her back, and he held her close too.
This wasn't right. She knew it wasn't right. She was indirectly cheating on Parth by doing this, but her heart was screaming that it wanted to stay with Randhir. She would deal with the insults by her mind later on. If it taunted her that she was wrong, then she would take it... but now, she wanted to listen to her heart, she wanted to be with Randhir, she wanted to feel him again.
"There's so much I want to tell you," she whispered into his shirt.
He held on to her shoulders and pulled her back, cupping her cheeks softly as he looked into her eyes.
"I know what you want to tell me, you don't need to say it," he said softly.
She shook her head.
"No Randhir... I do," she told him, sincerely. "Please Randhir, let me say it."
He stroked her cheeks with his fingers and nodded. She felt her eyes tear up as she told him what was in her heart.
"I know you want me to marry Parth. I accept that. My mind is telling me the same thing. If I ignored my mind and listened to my heart, I might get taunted for the rest of my life by my mind. I will marry Parth. You want me to marry Parth, my rational mind is telling me to marry him, so I will. But Randhir... at the same time, I don't think I can ever forget you. I won't be able to. I loved you too much... in fact, I love you now too. I think... I think I fell in love with you again sometime between yesterday and today, and the thought that I'm going to have to leave you hurts," she said breathlessly, "Randhir, I know... I know I'm wrong. I know all of this is wrong. But look at what God made us do, look at what's written in our destiny. It can't be a coincidence that all of this is happening. We met again after so many years and we have to do the most beautiful thing in the world - conceive a child together. Surely, this can't be a coincidence."
She took a deep breath, as Randhir continued to stroke her cheek, listening to her.
"Even if it was a coincidence, we still have to conceive a child. You and me Randhir. Us. And these feelings - they were never gone, I always loved you, but now... now I feel like, my love for you is at its strongest level, and I can't explain it because it's only been a few days since you came back to my life," she whispered, tears escaping from her eyes.
Randhir wiped them away immediately, as she continued to speak.
"I know, in the end I'm going to marry Parth because that's what's right for us... and I might hate myself for making this decision, but can you... can you stay with me for as long as you can?" she whispered. "Don't leave me Randhir. Be with me. Please. You're not the beast in my story. You're the prince. You're my prince Randhir... and if I have to marry someone else, then I'll do that. But I love you. And you're going to always be the first man in my life. Always."
"Sanyukta, do you know what you're saying?" Randhir asked her softly. "Do you understand what you're implying?"
"I know. Randhir, I know. This is wrong. I'm probably the worst person in the world. But I can't... I can't be away from you. What happened in the past, whether it was your mistake or mine, it was our mistake. The mistake was from us right? There was no you or me... we should have been one, but we weren't. And now this is our punishment," Sanyukta explained.
"Sanyukta there's no punishment by the world," Randhir told her softly. "You can still do what you want to do... but the truth is that we're the only ones who can punish ourselves. It's perspective Sanyukta."
"Randhir, I can't stay away from you," she whispered.
Then she hesitated for a few moments, before saying what she felt would free her heart for good.
"Can we... I mean, can I tell Parth I don't want to marry him... Can I stay with you?" she finally asked, her heart beating rapidly.
Suddenly she wasn't cold anymore.
