Chapter 1
Khushi's Monologue:
I glanced at the dark deep sky. This darkens seemed to engulf me. It was around me. It was in my heart. It was within me.
I hugged my knees and dipped my head, as I closed my eyes and the same darkness consumed me again.
Yes, I Khushi Gupta, a 23 years old girl, had not smiled from the past few months. I tried my best to show others that I was normal and my lips did curve into something called a smile. But it never reached my heart neither was it reflected in my eyes.
My eyes were blank, just like my heart, devoid of anything but pain. My life was as gloomy as this night. I opened my eyes to witness the moon, which was reappearing from the think cover of clouds. Sky was not dark anymore.
Lucky! I murmured and sighed because I knew there was no one, who would save me from the dawning darkness that is a part of my life now.
I had heard stories about knight in the shining armor or a perfect prince, who would come for the ultimate rescue and then they lived happily ever after.
Was there any happily ever after? If not, then why the hell did they make up those stories, to give a false hope to young girls, who would dream for that happily ever after, only to be disappointed at the end.
I closed my diary and got up hastily. It was too late and I had been sitting here alone, since hours.
End of Monologue
She started walking lost in her thoughts, when she heard tires screeching, and then someone pulled her from the road. She didn't close her eyes because she didn't fear death anymore. But there was something different about the whole thing. She felt secured.
She looked up to meet the eyes of the person who just saved her life. She saw pair of brown eyes staring her intensely. There was something in those eyes that was familiar but she couldn't fathom it.
She felt a strange pull towards that stranger. His grip on her arms was soothing. She felt like those strange eyes were demanding something.
"No!" She almost screamed and ran from there.
What was it? What was in his eyes? I can still feel his gaze on me. Who was he? She thought as she ran away from him.
He didn't follow her but his eyes scanned around and a diary that had been dropped by her caught his attention. He picked it up to read the last page.
Whenever you hear a story,
You hear the words 'happily ever after'.
And you don't have to feel sorry,
Cause it ends with joy and laughter.
But what if it wasn't true?
What if it wasn't so?
What was the ending you never knew?
And will probably never know.
What about all the tears and sorrow?
What about the death and war?
What about those who won't see tomorrow?
What about those at Death's door?
So next time you hear 'happily ever after',
Won't you remember this rhyme?
Is it all joy and laughter?
Or is the truth just death and crime?
*****
Two days later, Khushi was walking towards the hall, where an important business party was going on. Her business that was already on verge of disaster was depending solely on a person, who had thrown this party.
She had to convince him to invest in her project or else she would have to close down her business.
I can't afford to lose it. Though I know that the chances of my success were almost extinct but yet I have to try. Sadly, am unable to give up on my life, even when my life seems to give up on me. She tried to assure herself.
But the most difficult task at hands was to attend that party and face the entire world and do something that seemed to be enormously difficult and that was to smile. She took a deep breath as she entered the hall. T
The lavish party only spoke of elegancy and riches of the person who had thrown it. It was full of life but it didn't amuse her.
She looked around and found Akash who was standing at some distance and was chatting or may be flirting with the few girls. Akash was her only friend and also her business partner. He was equally stressed about the condition of their business but he was a pure play boy at heart. He never worried about his career. At most, if things didn't go well, he will just have to pack his bags and go back to his rich but conservative family.
"Akash, any chances to meet Arnav Singh Raizada? She asked him hopefully.
"Khushi, how many times have I told you, it is THE "Arnav Singh Raizada"
"First, he won't even give us few seconds and even if somehow we succeeded to gain his attention, he would never invest in our company that is already on the verge of bankruptcy. For a little change, please enjoy the party." Akash frowned and then continued when he saw her glowering.
"Alright, I know you can't enjoy but at least let me enjoy." Akash begged and she left him alone.
Khushi sat on an empty table and observed the people around her. Lately, she acted more as an observer of the world, rather than an active participant.
"Khushi," A familiar voice broke her reverie.
"Do you want to bring bad luck for this party as well?" A man clad in black asked her sarcastically. His eyes had the same wickedness in them and he had not changed even a bit. He was Suraj, her brother but he hated her.
She didn't reply and dipped her head. She was used to these type of rude comments.
"You really think that Raizada Industries will invest in your company? He laughed. Do you think you have any chance in front of Gupta's?
She knew that she was standing against her own brother. She knew she stood no chance but still, she couldn't give up, without trying.
Khushi you are here to pretend something you are not. She reminded herself and tried to block his comments.
"I think it would have been better, if you would have died that day." His voice was cruel but strangely there were no tears in her eyes. Recently, despite her every attempt, she was unable to cry, as if her tears had been dried.
Dejected, she rose from her place and rushed away from Suraj, when she collided into something strong. Someone held her waist, preventing her to fall but she hated someone helping her, she hated someone touching her.
She pushed him away and hurriedly, tried to move back, in order to maintain the distance but in haste she twisted her leg and lost her balance completely. Before she could fall, the same pair of strong hands held her, and pulled her with such a force that she bumped into his chest.
"I don't need any help. I don't need It," Her voice was filled with hurt as she uttered those words, staring at the ground.
"I know you don't need it, but maybe I am in a dire need of it." His grave voice had something different in it. She looked up instantly to meet his dark eyes.
But there was something in his eyes that held her captive. She couldn't tear her gaze. Both of them kept on staring each other, oblivious to their surroundings.
His eyes, his eyes have something that belongs to me. That is a part of me, she thought.
His eyes have pain; yes the same pain that exists in my eyes too, that is a part of me as well.
"Don't look at me like that," His voice was urgent.
"Why?" She asked, lost in those eyes and then something strike her.
She knew the same old line guys used frequently "don't look at me or you might fall in love". She knew it was not possible. She couldn't love anyone.
"Don't look at me like that," He almost pleaded this time.
"Because I will fall in love with you?" She smiled, assuming him to be another guy, who was trying to hit on her. But his answer shocked her to the core.
"No, because I will fall in my own eyes,"
