CHAPTER-1.
The heart races for a soul who is far away..
The eyes see what is not there-
Here I can see I can touch you whenever I want to-
But when I go near-you are just a MIRAGE and not here..
Her laughter rang the surroundings as he stared dumbstruck art her face..
"TU?!!TU SAACH mein MAINU shaadi karna chahta hai?!!
[YOU?!!YOU HONESTLY want to marry ME?!!]"More loud laughter followed her words..
And it was followed by giggles and murmurs from the crowd of people gathered round..
He could hear snatches of the conversations..They were all laughing at his stupidity..His dreaming of marrying Veera-Pritamura's educated girl..How could he imagine the most educated and ideal perfect girl would marry the most imperfect guy..?!!
"Chaddhdh Baldeva!Mazaak na bauhot ho gaya!Aab mainu bauhot sari kaam hai!Tere tarha nikamma thori na hu main!
[Leave it Baldeva!You have joked enough!Now I have lots of work!I have work to do unlike you!]"Veera scoffed out irritatedly just before she left..
The crowds dispersed but Baldev could feel the insult sinking in finally ,as everyone sent hi mused and pitiful looks before they left..
And as he had walked back to his house,his father was ready with his long tirade on how useless he was..
How useless he was..Useless..
He was useless..
USELESS!!!
Veera's face flashed and called him useless too..
Everyone was laughing at him and calling him useless..
Baldev sceamed out and suddenly everything and everyone vanished from infront of his eyes..
And perspiring he sat up in his narrow bed..
He took in his shabby surroundings,and and realised he had been having a nightmare..A nightmare that played back the life he had lived..
He slowly got up from the cranky old cot that squeaked as he moved,and drank a long sip of water from the earthen jar that sat at a corner of the tiny dimly lit room.
He opened the door and walked out for a breathe of fresh air,still in his inner vest,which was torn at many places..
Baldev looked up at the stars encrusting the dark night sky and frowned thoughtfully..
Why had he suddenly remembered this incidence after six long months?!
Was it because he had taken up a job close to Pritampura this time..?!
But he was not going to go into the village at all!He was just going to work nearby the jungle..
All he had to do was forget his past,and earn his living through hard work,like he had been doing the past six months..
All he had to do was forget that he had his roots in Pritampura..His heart and soul in Pritampura..
He had to make a good saving to start his own business..And he was almost there now..Just a few more months of gathered savings and Baldev would soon be owning his own shop..
He had kept the memories of that last day in Pritamura at the very back of his mind.But suddenly tonight after six months the memory had come back..
The painful memory that had turned him into a wanderer and struggler in this journey called life..
That had turned him into a serious,stern and rude quiet young man,who never laughed or smiled..
Baldev was satisfied with his life now..
The hard work every day made him tired by night time,and he slept like the dead.
He sighed and closed his eyes,as Veera's face flashed in front of his eyes..
It was a mirage..It had all been a MIRAGE..The dreams he had seen of becoming the village Sarpaanch-her mother had stopped supporting him..Knowing Ranvi would be better supported by everyone..
His dream that Veera loved him,and would marry him..She hated him like always..And only pitied him..
It had all been a MIRAGE..An impossible MIRAGE,that he had walked through and moved on..
