War Path: PROLOGUE
Niranjan Agnihotri walked into Shlok's room just as Varad straightened out Shlok's collar. The burgundy and gold trimmed prince coat looked incredible on his little brother, thought Varad.
Picture this:
Varad hugged him: I cannot believe today's your engagement. Very happy for you brother!
Shlok hugged him back with restraint. There was a chill setting about. He was not feeling that sense of satisfaction he thought he would be feeling after Astha's acquiescence.
Just then, Shlok saw his father's reflection on the mirror. Shlok turned around and touched his feet reverently.
Niranjan smiled satisfactorily: Varad is right, we are all very proud of you for taking this decision Shlok. Life me age barna parta hai (One should move on in life). Congratulations baccha (He hugged him).
Shlok: Thank you, Baba.
Niranjan: Here's the ring.
Shlok gingerly took the small, suede cobalt box and opened it. Inside there was a cold, woman's engagement ring of the most brilliant red ruby set in a platinum claw clasp. How apt, he thought. It made him uneasy. Was he really going to do this? Marry an innocent girl who had no idea that he had just orchestrated this wedding by pretending to be in love?
His heart involuntarily caught in a vise.
Niranjan: Like it?
Shlok: Ah...yes. Baba...are you happy?
Niranjan: I am happy you are moving on in life and you will be living here with me now. What more could I wish for?
Shlok: No, I mean, are you happy that I picked Astha? I know you wanted her as a bahu. I mean, when she turned the offer down...
Niranjan stopped him: Haan, she's a spirited girl. Don't frown, there's no need to worry. She will learn our ways soon. She will understand. After all, your Ayi is also there to show her the ways of our house.
That's what he was afraid of, thought Shlok. He might have led her to believe that he actually cared for her and got her to agree on the marriage after everyone saw them together at the pooja, but he was not convinced she was going to be a complacent bahu this house expected. That little minx had her opinions about how things should be in society. That's what led to his father's badnaami (hurt reputation) to begin with. If she wasn't such a pain, none of this would have had to happen to her.
Niranjan saw the guilt in Shlok's eyes. His son was having a call from conscience. He did not want any misgivings now, not this close to his plan being realized...
Niranjan: Come now, they are all waiting downstairs for you. Especially Astha, hmm?
Shlok's feet felt like lead as he forced himself to take the steps. His father and brother kept close behind him.
All the guests awaited them in the white marble hall.
As he walked down the steps, his heart stopped short. Their eyes met. She looked down shyly. He looked away before taking a peek again. She matched him with a burgundy dress, lehenga, whatever you call those things. He did not know.
Picture this with Astha's hair down (no ugly hair band):
Shlok froze. My god, was she always this beautiful!? He was making a mistake. Yes, a very grave mistake.
