The Missing Piece

The family had  moved celebrations from the dinning table into the garden.

Prernas eyes search for Rishabh, not seeing  him amongst the others she walks into the kitchen where George is skilfully changing the icing on the cake to fit with the occasion.

“Thank you George”, she says seeing him at work whilst the others partied.

“My pleasure”, he replies over his glasses You must be very happy” he adds

Prerna nods,

“I am but I may have broken one or two of Mr Bajajs values on the way.” she says with wary eyes but George didn’t see it that way.

“Toed the line maybe Mrs Bajaj but broken never.. not even if you tried”

Prerna smiled, what would she do without him she wondered?

“You haven’t seen Mr Bajaj have you? she asks looking into the lounge frozen they were stood.

“I saw him heading to his study a little while ago” replies George.

….

George looks down at a delicious but untidy looking cake as Prerna leaves.

“More icing” he says to himself heading off to the pantry. On returning a few mins later if his eyes weren’t playing tricks on his old soul there was a piece of cake missing!

“Oh my!” he lets out scratching his head.

..

Prerna into Rishabhs study, a room he rarely used to find him behind his desk.

Leaning back in his chair Rishabh had left his whisky behind on the desk for something he was reading under the warm study light.

“Aap ke bare mein pucha ja raha hai “ (Your being asked about”) she said quietly.

Lifting his eyes to her and seeing her avoid his gaze he called her over.

“Paas ayey” (Come closer”) he asks which takes her by surprise but she walks closer non the less.

Hearing her stop a little distance away he Rishabh holds his hand out. He wanted her closer.

Putting her hand in his Prerna feels Rishabh guide her effortlessly to perch on his desk in front of him. It was usual but what wasn’t about this evening.

Prernas looks into his eyes at once but realises she has no words just feelings on display in her eyes for him to read as he wished. And he did

She hears Rishabh put down the letter,  take off  his glasses and sit back in his chair that little more. His gaze staying firmly upon her.

“I knew there was a chance you would turn down the role.”

“Whether you want the role or not I need you to know you  are worthy of it, you are capable, you are intelligent, you are strong,  you are lovable.
A tear formed for every one of Mr Bajajs compliments for her and began rolling down her face.”

Rishabh draws  his chair in closer and lifts her chin so she’d meet his gaze before affectionately rubbing away tears and the hurt.

“I would be honoured to complete the Bajaj family with you” he spoke quietly against her lips before kissing her to feel her break into  the smile he’d been waiting for all day.

Prerna wished to say her peice. And she didn’t need to say much

“If you won’t leave your work then at least make your passion your work.. “ he heard her say making him think deeply with just a few words.

They were interupped by a knock at the door both turned towards it to see George open  the door ajar slightly.

“Sorry to interrupt but I thought you may like to join us for cake downstairs”.

“We’re on our way”,replies whilst Rishabh.

Taking a moment aside for  themselves Rishabh takes Prernas hand in his hand. Amongst the quiet they hear a little voice that seems to be close by.  They look at one another after which Rishabh looks under his desk to see a tiny chocolatey smile and raises his brow.
