Chapter 37"Pinky, what should I do? Sir wants me to arrange this big party and he was so insistent that there should not be any mistake. I don't know what I should do to arrange this party so that Sir will like it and not get angry at me."
"Oh yaar, don't look at me," exclaimed Pinky before she took a bite of her sandwich, "I don't know what to do anymore than you."
"But Pinky, you've been in Delhi a long time. You must have been to some parties before. In Hoshiarpur we only have shaadis, lohri, holi, dewaali, nothing like these office night parties. What do I do?"
Pinky looked around, not knowing what to tell her friend when she saw Adi coming down the hall. "Geet, you should ask Adi sir. He's worked here a long time. He must have some experience you could use."
Geet's eyes lit up upon seeing the helpful Adi sir. She hurried over to him and explained her problem in great detail, not minding the strange laughter that he emitted periodically. Geet begged him to help her, like he had helped her with so many other things.
"Adi sir, you must know what kind of party Sir would like after working here so many years," she said.
"Nahi, Geet, how would I know what Sir likes? I don't think there is a person alive on earth who can understand Maan sir except himself. If you want to arrange the party the way he wants, then Maan sir is the only one you can ask about that."
"Ask Sir! No, no, if I ask him, he is sure to get angry with me. You ask him, Adi, sir, please!"
"No, Geet. Why should I question Sir? He gave you this responsibility, so you should be the one to ask him."
"But, I'm scared to ask him, Adi sir. It's true and I'm not afraid to admit it," she said, looking at him with big eyes.
"Well, Geet, you can gather all your courage and ask him tomorrow. Actually, that's what I came to find you for. Maan sir has gone out for a late night meeting with some other Delhi business men. I know that it's not quite time to go home, but since the boss in no longer here, if you don't have work that needs finishing, you can leave too."
Geet bit her lip anxiously, trying to think of what she should do. If Maan was going for a late night meeting, she wouldn't be able to question him until the next day. She thought about asking Savitri, but decided against it. After all, she needed the party to be according to Maan's expectations, not his grandmother's.
The next morning found Geet once again looking to Pinky for help. She was trying to get her friend to give her tips on how to ask Maan about the party. Pinky wasn't much help, and became almost mute when Maan himself walked up and demanded that Geet come to his office. Of course Geet made a hash of things by asking if he wanted her to come right then, giving him his first reason to be upset with her that day. After scolding herself for talking to much when she had promised herself not to do that, Geet hurried off after Maan, hoping that she could find a way to ask his help.
Of course nothing went the way Geet hoped it would. When she got into Maan's office he started rambling off a mile a minute about the Chopra project. He handed her a file of some more details he wanted her to have, all the while saying how important the project was for the company. He reminded her that his family's name was attached to the company, and that meant that what happened at KC also reflected on the Khurana Family's good name. What really stole Geet's courage was when Maan stressed that there should be no mistakes in the project, or in the party, before telling her to go get to work.
As Geet turned away from him, Maan caught sight of something he didn't expect to see. Actually, it wasn't so unusual except that he hadn't seen it since Hoshiarpur, and he didn't know why he was seeing it now. Questioning her about why she had tears rolling down her cheeks, he really wanted to know the answer. He hadn't said anything bad to her, or yelled at her in any way, so her crying did not make any sense.
"I have no idea how to arrange the party the way you want. I wanted to ask you about it, but you didn't give me any chance to. You just said that there shouldn't be any mistakes. That's why..."
Maan couldn't believe that a problem as simple as this caused Geet to be upset enough that she was crying over it. Still, he was impressed that she was actually willing to admit that she couldn't do it with out help. That must have been why he helped her so easily, and not because her tears were disturbing. Naturally, being Geet, she couldn't take notes quietly. No, she had to direct him on how fast to talk and ask too many questions.
It wasn't that bad though. At least she took responsibility for understanding, even if she was annoying about it. While Maan watched her write on her notepad like a little girl in school, it struck him for the first time, how young she looked. She didn't even seem to be as old as her eighteen years, the way she silently echoed his words while writing them down. As for her reaction to the mention of a bar, Maan was actually amused at how she tried to cover up her shock.
It went without saying that Maan did not intend to let her see his amusement or his response to her smiles. After all, he was the boss. Even if he had decided to give her the benefit of the doubt after the file mixup, that didn't mean he wouldn't keep the upper hand. Still, something about her earnest nature made him feel like things might work out smoothly after all.
"Ma'am, your brilliant plan is a flop! MK was actually helping Geet. I can't believe it, but now she will plan the party perfectly," complained Tasha after she and Sasha left their place of eavesdropping outside Maan's office for a table in the cafeteria.
"Geet may have taken advise from MK about the party, but that doesn't mean that she won't make mistakes, especial if we help a little bit," said Sasha shrewdly while sipping her coffee.
"What do you mean, Ma'am?" Tasha listened, smiling as Sasha whispered her ideas, but then she frowned. "But Sasha...I mean, Ma'am, wouldn't it be better to do something to the project files, like happened before? That would be a sure thing to make DD mad at this behenji and kick her out."
"Tasha, I keep telling you that this is why you are the secretary and I'm in charge. Now that the clients have given the project to KC, I can't do anything that might make the clients upset about it. Not even to show up that stupid Geet. But a party is a different matter. If things go wrong, it won't reflect on anyone but the person who organized it."
"Oh, I see. Silly me! So if the party is messed up, then DD will fire Geet, but Mr. Chopra won't fire KC."
Sasha rolled her eyes at Tasha's navety. "I doubt that MK will fire Geet that easily. If he was going to, he would have done it by now. No, what we want right now is to make him loose his trust on her. That is the first step."
PrecapShe hurried to her door, before turning back in frustration. "No, you can't ask him again. Didn't you see how he was looking at you when you kept asking all those questions?
