Actress Adrija Roy is currently enjoying one of the most important phases of her career. With a successful television show, a much-talked-about character, and happiness in her personal life, the actress is balancing everything with calmness and maturity. Her role in the popular TV show Anupamaa has sparked intense reactions from audiences, especially because of the emotional conflict between her character Rahi and her on-screen mother.
Talking about the audience reaction, Adrija admitted that viewers have not held back their opinions. She shared that many people are upset with her character and often react strongly to the ongoing storyline. Referring to being called the “worst daughter in the country,” she explained that whenever a daughter goes against her mother, people immediately tend to see her in a negative way, regardless of whether she is right or wrong.
However, Adrija is clear about separating herself from the character she portrays on screen. She pointed out that viewers often direct their anger at her personally, even though she is only performing the role written for the show. According to her, there is little sense in being angry with her as an individual because she has not done anything outside of acting out the character’s journey.
“Rahi Is Not Completely Wrong”
One of the most talked-about moments in the recent track was the slap scene, which received strong reactions from fans. Interestingly, Adrija revealed that she actually enjoys performing such emotionally charged scenes. She said that what excites her about the role is the opportunity to portray someone who is neither completely positive nor completely negative, but someone who exists in a gray space.
For Adrija, that complexity is what makes Rahi realistic and relatable. She believes that no human being is entirely good. According to her, every person has both positive and negative sides, and that is exactly what she tries to reflect through her performance. She feels that people may judge the character harshly at first, but if they pause and truly place themselves in Rahi’s situation, they may realize that her reactions are not entirely unjustified.
The actress also spoke about the controversy surrounding her statements during interviews about the show. She admitted that she has become cautious while speaking because almost every comment she makes related to the series becomes a major talking point online. She shared that people often question her views and react strongly to anything she says in defense of the character. Because of this, she sometimes feels scared to even justify Rahi’s emotions publicly.
“Any Daughter Would Feel Hurt”
Explaining the emotional core behind Rahi’s anger, Adrija said the character’s frustration comes from a deeply personal and relatable place. She described how Rahi questions her mother’s priorities by pointing out that while she calls someone her son, she is also opening a restaurant to fulfill another girl’s dream after his own restaurant failed. According to Adrija, any daughter in such a situation would naturally feel hurt and angry.
Despite the criticism surrounding the track, Adrija continues to enjoy the challenge of portraying such layered emotions on screen. Much of that comfort, she says, comes from working alongside veteran actress Rupali Ganguly. Adrija praised Rupali for the intensity she brings to every scene and admitted that acting with her has been an incredible experience.
She revealed that over time, their understanding as co-actors has become so strong that they no longer need separate rehearsals if they already know their lines well. Their chemistry and emotional sync make scenes flow naturally. Adrija even joked that if they were actually mother and daughter in real life, Rupali would probably slap her for some of the harsh things Rahi says in the show.
The actress further explained that when a co-actor gives the right reaction and emotional cue, it automatically improves one’s own performance. Because of the comfort and connection she shares with Rupali on set, many scenes no longer feel like acting to her. Instead, the emotions come across organically and naturally, making the performances even more impactful for viewers.
With the ongoing storyline creating constant buzz among audiences, Adrija Roy’s portrayal of Rahi continues to remain one of the most discussed aspects of Anupamaa. Even amid criticism and controversy, the actress stands by the emotional depth of her character and believes that understanding Rahi’s perspective is the key to seeing the story beyo
nd simple right and wrong.
