Chapter 44

Adi looked around at the staff gathered, and he could see the nervousness running through the group. It was rare that the boss wanted to have a meeting with everyone, so they knew that something was definitely up. He saw Sasha walk in with Tasha, noticing how the woman didn't look quite her usual peppy self. He had some suspicions about why, but didn't intend to say anything to Maan. He was never one for office politics. However, that didn't mean that he was above making a taunt or two.

"What do you think, Sasha? Sir calling all of us for a meeting? Looks like jobs might be on the line."

"Don't talk to me!" Sasha bit out, giving a slight wince.

"Why so harsh this morning, Sasha?" he asked innocently, even though he was smirking on the inside.

"Adi!" came the exclamation the prevented Sasha from responding back. "If you are done with your chatting, do you think I might speak?"

All the staff snapped to attention at Maan's words, while Adi muttered, "Of.c.c.course, S.sir. S..s.sorry."

Walking toward the group slowly, Maan said in a voice that commanded respect, "Everyone here knows what happened last night with Geet. Now, what I want to know, is how did all that happen?"

"MK," cut in Sasha quickly, "I don't think that anyone here has done anything wrong. What I mean is, what happen last night was a mistake. Everyone realizes that. It's understandable. Out on the dance floor, Geet would have been nervous. With a saree it's easy to, you know..."

"Yes, Sir," continued Tasha, almost as if she was Sasha's twin. "Dancing in saree would be very hard. Anyone who wears saree would have a problem. You know, her own foot...on the saree..."

Maan just glared at Tasha, ending her little rant, except for a "Silly me," that popped out. In fact, the way he was looking at both Sasha and Tasha had Sasha worried that she may have said too much. It was clear that Geet had not told him anything, and she needed to be extra careful not to give herself away. Deciding it was better not to say anything else, Sasha stood quietly.

"You all can go back to your work. But listening carefully to one thing. I don't want anyone to speak about what happened last night, not to anyone, and especially not to Geet. I don't like gossip and you all know this very well. If I find out that anyone is spreading rumors, they will be out within five minutes."

All the staff filed away slowly, once the boss had his say, all except one. Pinky was a little nervous to go into Maan's office after the meeting and his threat to fire anyone who spread gossip. Not that she was a gossip, but good things never happened when the boss threatened to fire people. Still, she had something important to give him, something that he needed. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door, walking in with trepidation.

"What is it?"

"Sir, Geet sent you these files. Chopra project files," Pinky said nervously, holding the files out to Maan as if he was a lion ready to pounce.

"Where is Geet? Tell her to come to my office. I want to speak with her."

Pinky blinked, momentarily taken aback, before saying, "But Geet isn't coming to the office today."

"Not coming to the office," repeated Maan.

"Yes, didn't you know?" asked Pinky, confusion clearly stated in her furrowed brows.

Maan just glared at her until she left the office in a rush to get away from his terrible gaze. Geet not being in the office was surprising, for she had not informed him of anything. However, Maan was no fool and could easily guess why she hadn't come to the office. Since he hadn't threatened all the staff not to say anything, only to have her stay cowering at home, Maan decided that he would have to do something to make her come in.

****

Having decided not to go into the office any more, Geet determined to spend a lazy morning at home, starting with a cup of tea. Making tea had always been a soothing exercise for her and this time it was no different. Though she new that what happened with her saree was only Sasha's fault, she was able to put her anger and hurt aside. She even cheered up enough that she could talk to herself, trying to figure out what she should do now.

"I think I will talk to Dadima about maybe taking some correspondance courses, since I missed some school. I don't think being a teacher is what I want to do any more, so I'll have to think of something else. Maybe Dadima will have some ideas."

"Geet madam, phone for you," said Suresh, suddenly coming into the kitchen and holding out the phone to her.

"Who could be calling me?" thought Geet, who was just finishing pouring the tea into her cup.

"Oye, Geet," she heard coming out of the phone, the chirpy voice making her smile as she put the receiver to her ear.

"Hello, Pinky," replied Geet, starting to walk back up the stairs to her room. Taking a sip of her tea, she asked, "Why are you calling? You really should be doing your job right now instead of talking to me. You don't want to get into any trouble.

"Geet, you're the boss's wife. How can I get in trouble talking to you? Actually, I can't believe that you're really married to DD. I mean, I believe it, I just can't believe that a friend of mine is married to DD. How did you get married? It must have been arranged, with the way DD is. How come you never told that your husband was DD? And coming to the office like you did to become his secretary...Wow! You just couldn't stay away from him, right? That's so romantic."

Geet rolled her eyes and said, "Pinky, I'm sure that this is not why you called, and if it is, then I'm just going to hang up the phone."

"No, Geet, I really did have a reason for calling. I called the house because I have a very important message for DD, but the servant said he wasn't there, so I asked to talk to you."

"Of course he's not here. He's at the office. Just go into his cabin and give him the message. He might be brusk, but he's not that bad that you have to be afraid of giving a message."

"No, Geet, actually Adi told me that DD went back..."

A knock came on Geet's bedroom door, so she asked Pinky to wait while she went to see who it was. Expecting one of the servants to be there when she opened the door left Geet totally shocked when she saw who it was. She was so shocked that she closed the door quickly, thinking that it could not possibly be Maan standing on the other side.

"Pinky, you stop talking about 'DD' like that," she complained sternly. "You've got me imagining that Maan is standing at my door, when I know very well that isn't possible."

"But Geet, that was what I was trying to tell you. DD is..." The knock came again, pulling Geet's attention away and forcing her to open the door.

"Do you always shut the door in people's faces like that, or is this just a special occasion?" questioned her illusion in a very Maan-like way.

"You...you are here?" squeaked out Geet, her eyes wide.

"What is so strange about that?"

"Well...I mean...office...and I'm here alone, in my pajamas..."

Maan rolled his eyes. "Geet, I'm not some stranger that you have to be worried about being alone with. Anyway, I'm only here on business. I want the missing file."

Geet had no idea what he was talking about. When questioned, Maan told her that she had only sent three files for the Chopra project, when there should have been four. Geet offered to look while Maan waited, to which he agreed. Geet tried her hardest to find it, looking everywhere in her room, in the mansion, and even on Maan's personal desk, but to no avail.

"I think maybe the file is in the office somewhere," she finally told Maan quietly.

"Alright then. Come to the office to find it and then you can give the presentation just as you were supposed to."

"But Maan, I'm no longer going to the office." The small voice that uttered this statement, as well as the tears he could see forming, told Maan that he would have to do something to shake her out of her depressed state.

"How can I forget, that whenever anything bad happens, you never try to find a solution, but just sit at home and cry. I know that what happened last night was not good, but was it your fault? Did you step on your own saree? No? Then why are you not trying to find out what really happened? Why are you afraid to come in front of everyone? If I had know that you would react in this way, I never would have helped you."

Folding his arms, Maan continued, "Geet, never mind about the fact that you have taken a job that you are now leaving unfinished. Never mind that there are people who are counting on you. If you fail to stand up for yourself today, then for the rest of your life you will never be able to face anyone. Don't think that it matters to me. It's your life, you can do what you want. If you want to leave the office, you can leave. No one is stopping you."

Chapter 45

Sasha sat in her chair, trying not to look like she wanted to kill Geet and throw up at the same time. Though she had taken medicine, her head still hurt and a nauseous feeling would come upon her some times, though whether it was from her hatred of Geet, or still the hangover, she couldn't be sure. Her mind burned as she watched the young girl flit back and forth, her chirpy voice bouncing around the room. It was infuriating to see MK so taken with the little thing's presentation.

She watched as he just sat back, an almost smile sitting on his face while his eyes never left Geet's slender form. The he didn't even bothering to ask questions or make any kind of criticism like he usually did with her own presentations before he left. There was no way that Sasha was going to let this little interloper get away with showing her up and stealing her man.

"Wow, Geet. You must have a lot of courage, considering the condition you were in last night, you still came to the office today. I'm impressed. What happened to you was very bad, wasn't it, Geet?"

"Yes," responded Geet, looking Sasha straight in the eye. "And I know who was responsible for it, and why."

"Oh, really. Well, Miss. Geet, or should I say Mrs. Geet Khurana, you better be careful about airing your suspicions without any proof."

"In the office I am just Geet, Ma'am," replied Geet calmly, "and I haven't said anything to anybody. I don't need to. The truth can't be hidden for long, and a person's deeds will always come out in the end. It would be better for some people to realize this before they get into a situation that they can't get out of."

Sasha felt like grabbing the stupid girl's hair and ripping it straight out of her head, and she really didn't know how she contained herself. It didn't help that Tasha came to find her, blabbing about how Geet had come to the office and how it seemed like she could do anything and Maan would agree. Sasha couldn't accept defeat so easily, but she knew that winning would not be easy. She definitely needed more information.

"Sasha, I mean Ma'am...What are we doing again?"

"Shut up and listen. I want to hear what that behenji is saying to MK."

Sasha could here Geet saying thank you to MK for helping her in the party and that morning. Nothing much else was said, and the two eavesdroppers had to make themselves scarce when Geet came out. Yet Sasha was not finished with her fact finding mission. Only a few minutes later she was standing casually by Geet's office, pretending to go over something with Tasha, while really listening to Geet and Pinky's conversation.

"Ma'am, I really don't understand what all of this means," complained Tasha after they were ensconced back in Sasha's office.

"It's really very simple, Tasha. Why would Geet tell MK thanks here in the office? Why not say it at home? Why would MK have to go back home and do a drama to get Geet to come back to the office? Why didn't they just talk about everything at home? The even bigger question is, why did Geet need to take gift giving advise from her roly-poly friend? Shouldn't she know what kind of gift's MK likes?"

"I don't know Sasha, I'm mean, Ma'am. I don't know why."

"Because something is not right with this marriage," stated Sasha confidently. "MK and that Geet talk to each other like they are practically strangers, or at least just acquaintances, not husband and wife." Sasha began pacing around, her attitude becoming more and more upbeat as she talked.

"If only I had thought through things calmly last night. MK being married to that little nothing came as a complete shock to everyone, Everyone! And why not? Khurana Constructions is the most respected construction business in India, and MK such a well known businessman, and yet, no one knew that he was married?"

"That does seem a little strange," agree Tasha, nodding her head in a way that caused her ponytail to bob up and down.

"It's not 'a little strange', it's impossible. MK's wedding would be the news item of the year. Newspapers would be sprawled with headlines like 'Delhi's most eligible bachelor taken' etc. Everyone who is any one would have been invited to such an important event, but no, not one worried about any kind of ceremony or celebration or anything."

"So, what exactly does that mean?"

"It means," said Sasha slowly, a strange light in her eyes, "that the marriage was kept a secret."

"The marriage was kept a secret!" repeated Tasha excitedly. Then a blank look came on her face as she asked, "So?"

"So, MK isn't the type of person to do a secret marriage in normal circumstances. He would only do something like that if he were forced into it somehow."

Tasha gasped, her hands on her mouth as she questioned, "So, you mean this behenji trapped him somehow?"

"I think so," confirmed Sasha. "You've seen how girls are always coming to this company, hoping that they can land a job with the famous MK. Then that s**t almost caught him, well, not really almost, because he's MK, but she got closer than anyone yet. There is no way that MK would just get married so soon after that incident, not on purpose."

"But, Sasha...I mean, Ma'am...I mean, silly me. I don't understand one thing. How could this behenji trap DD into marriage? I mean, he is so rich and powerful, he could just get her arrested or something, right?"

"In normal circumstances I would agree with you, MK would have no trouble dealing with this stupid girl. Since he hasn't, that can only mean that she has some hold over him. What that is, and how to stop her, is what we need to concentrate on." Folding her arms and looking at nothing in hard concentration, Sasha said, "This girl is unaccountably clever. We don't want her to know that we are on to her game, but we still need to find out as much about her as possible. That will be my job. I want you to keep an eye on her and report back to me about anything she does in the office."

"Oh Ma'am, you know that MK is going to be so grateful when you help him throw this behenji out of his life." Sasha smiled, silently agreeing with her secretary's statement and finally feeling like things were under control again.

"Ma'am, I am just wondering one thing. If DD was trapped into this marriage, why did he dance with Geet last night and help her just like a husband would?"

"Shut up, Tasha! That was not MK acting like a husband. MK is a very honorable and intelligent man. He won't air his personal problems for everyone to see and he won't leave a woman in distress without helping. That is just the way his character is. There is no way that he feels anything special for that Punjabi upstart. No way!"
