Yes, another person as (Bhansali's) Devdas could have done that....but then, this person wouldn't have let Paro get married with another man, I think.
Apart from depression, I'm sure, this Devdas also felt guilt and self-disgust to not having (had) the courage to be in company of his father (and his sister-in-law). I think, Bhansali wanted SRK to play a weakling to elevate the leading women. Btw, I didn't see Madhuri's role as a supporting one, especially when Bhansali made the women strong and kind of friends...
Yes again, that Bhansali's Devdas hasn't the depth of Dilip Saab's one...maybe the novel was just a means to showcase his aesthetic sense and talent.
