But Paro didn't start drinking
Devdas was just a frustrated and weak person who made everyone's life miserable.
Well, a modern Paro may also have taken to alcohol with the same kind of husband and step-son and given away without love...but Bhansali made a lavish movie and in the early 1900s, wealthy married women wouldn't drink themselves to death (or would they?)...
Devdas definitely was an immature man, but honestly, what support in the family he really had - except money... and once the possibility lost to fight for a life with Paro he had no aim in life anymore...so he aimed for death. Something that also happens in modern times when a male ego can't cope with reality.
Anyways, I think that all the female characters are more important in the movie, especially Chandramukhi being the only one with a deep understanding for what happens.
Like the Romeo&Juliet theme (which is also included in Devdas), the Devdas-behaviour has become a theme in movies (and literature).
