Well, Devdas resorted to alcohol because of his father issue, other movie characters resort to violence...I largely prefer if the one who has the issue and isn't able to overcome it, kills himself than other people...

Agreed..

But Paro didn't start drinking smiley36

Devdas was just a frustrated and weak person who made everyone's life miserable.

My scattered thoughts about Devdas:

The first time I watched this movie, I fell asleep in the theatre. Over time, I have come to appreciate it. Songs are classic, and some dialogues are like poetry. Aishwarya looked pretty but she has looked better in some of her other movies.

Well, a modern Paro may also have taken to alcohol with the same kind of husband and step-son and given away without love...but Bhansali made a lavish movie and in the early 1900s, wealthy married women wouldn't drink themselves to death (or would they?)...

Devdas definitely was an immature man, but honestly, what support in the family he really had - except money... and once the possibility lost to fight for a life with Paro he had no aim in life anymore...so he aimed for death. Something that also happens in modern times when a male ego can't cope with reality.

Anyways, I think that all the female characters are more important in the movie, especially Chandramukhi being the only one with a deep understanding for what happens.

Like the Romeo&Juliet theme (which is also included in Devdas), the Devdas-behaviour has become a theme in movies (and literature).

And that's why Devdas was just a frustrated and weak person who made everyone's life miserable.

And Paro didn't start drinking even in Dev D.
