one of my favorite rishi Kapoor movies, very regressive, but rishi Kapoor is so natural in tawaif, not much of a kotha story though......

Waheeda Rahman in Mujhe Jeene Do as the tawaif was mesmerizing but tragic. First her mother exploited her. But Waheeda is never ashamed of her profession.Then Sunil Dutt as the dacoit kidnapped her. The film shows the sheer exhaustion of walking for miles while pregnant (horses were used only for raids), the scramble for finding a safe location for childbirth and the disdain and hatred from the villagers who learn that her (absent) husband is a dacoit. It was heartbreaking to see her and her child being chased across a maze of alleys by a crowd hungry for her blood.

Mumtaz in Aaina gave one of her best performances. The way she slapped back a customer who slapped her and dared to ask "What's a nice Brahmin girl like you doing in a place like this?" Pat comes her reply. "What's a nice Brahmin boy like you doing in a place like this?" The sheer hypocrisy of her huge family whom she supported for so long. Rani's remake "Laaga chunari main daag" didn't have even an ounce of Mumtaz's chutzpah.
