I've not yet seen Alia's Gangubai and Vidya's Begum Jaan.

Lakshmi (with Monali Thakur and Shefali Shah) also is a gripping film on prostitution (imo).

Begum Jaan was a good painful movie. Vidya was more like a pimp aur that 'aunt' who trained girl.

Nothing will ever come close to Rekha in & as Umrao Jaan. She was PERFECT in every damn frame of that movie, and that whole movie was just PERFECTION.

It is one of those classics that is a must watch for all.

Rekha in Umrao Jaan is def my fav

Also Kareena in Chameli, that reminds how good of an actress Kareena is as that Kareena would've killed Gangubai.

But one of the most haunting performances is def Rituparna Sengupta in 'Rajkahini', the original bengali film of which Begum Jaan was remake. I happened to watch it's trailer after Begum Jaan trailer and watched the movie because of that trailer. Just in the trailer I found Vidya's performance very caricaturish as compared to her(Rituparna Sengupta's) portrayal of Begum Jaan, maybe it was just the direction. If you guys can, please checkout that movie. It's a very very good but equally heartbreaking.
