I think he's one of the most talented directors on the block. Each and every one of his films is different from each other, and has something new to offer. Here's my take on the movies which I've watched of his:
1. Vicky Donor -- A quirky, colourful comedy with lots of heart. The best part about the film was the relatibility factor. Each and every character was etched out with precision, and seemed to be borrowed from real life. The blend of humour and social messaging was engaging, to say the least, and were in complete sync with each other. Also, both debutantes Ayushmann and Yami came up with sincere, heart-warming performances.
2. Piku -- Piku is not a movie. It is a feeling. A near-flawless collaboration between Shoojit and Juhi Chaturvedi, the writing was its main highlight. I love how authentic and real this film is, treating badly-flawed characters with dignity and pathos. I love how Piku didn't need to be a feminist icon, but an average woman struggling with day-to-day issues. I love how the chemistry between Piku and Rana played out, with quirkiness intact. I love how Amitjee got the mannerisms and accent right of a doting yet capricious dad right. And I love how constipation became the motif around which larger themes were woven so well.
3. October -- I know October was not everyone's cup of tea. But I loved it.
For me, the fact that the love story was not a typical one piqued my interest. These were two very different people who lived in their own worlds. There was no tangible reason for Dan to feel the way that he did. It was just his inherent sensitivity which triggered his love, if it can be called that. For him, it was just too big a deal that someone had asked for him before going into a deep sleep from which they may never wake up again. To say that Dan is a complex character to essay may very well be an understatement. I don't mean to say that Dan is not someone who you won't come across in your everyday life, that is highly likely. But still, just like the rest of us, there is a certain uniqueness about him. His set of values and emotions are starkly different from the ones around him.
The movie was so slow yet so lyrical, so subtle yet so meaningful. I know a lot of people didn't like the movie because nothing much happened, but I think that's the beauty of it. The silences in the movie spoke volumes...
4. Gulabo Sitabo -- Shoojit Sircar's brilliant direction and Juhi Chaturvedi's extraordinary writing doesn't make you feel bored a second. Aveek Mukhopadhay's cinematography is also brilliant. The make up team definitely needs a shout out for Big B's makeup which is almost flawless. From the beginning till the climax you will definitely have a smile on your face by the banter but the melancholy theme also ensures that you also feel for the characters in the climax. Overall, this film is a class appealing therefore will attract limited audience. The slow pace of the film may test your patience Gulabo Sitabo is more like of October than Piku as rightly being said by some critics. This film belongs to Bachchan sahab for his exemplary performance.
What is your opinion on Shoojit Sircar and his films?
