I thought the theme was "Look geet", translated into "folk songs". But I struggled to find actual folk songs in the entire episode.

Folk music, in the most basic sense of the term, is music by and for the common people. "It is music of the common people that has been passed on by memorization or repetition rather than by writing, and has deep roots in its own culture."

With the exception of Raja's Kesariya Balam and Sumedha's Morni baaga ma (An adaptation of a marwari folk song), I found that none of the others actually fitted into this category. All others were mere filmi numbers that had local dialects. If a song in a local dialect turns into a folk song - then every song in Tamil, telegu, punjabi or Gujarati is a folk song.

Even in Aneek's song, only the bit - "sa ra ra ra" is a folk bit. The rest is a pure filmi composition. Paan Khaye Saiyaan Hamaar - though sounds like a folk number, it isn't. It was specifically written and composed for Teesri kasam.

The creative team could at least called the theme something different.

Yeah, it would have been great if every one had actually sung folk songs or atleast an adaptation of a folk song in a movie..every region has beautiful as well as popular folk songs....but it seems there are no takers for good music...

i guess they probably thought ppl won't recognize the songs if the contestants sang actual folk songs. Also some ppl mite find them boring since folk songs are not something that they hear everyday.

it's not a folk song, it's an adaptation of one. but it's definately more folk than what everyone else (other than raja) sang. i would like it better to hear real non-film folk songs like we used to in the olden days of srgmp before it transformed into a reality show. there are so many regions in india that are filled with great disinct folk music and it would have been so cool if they put together a collection of folk music from all over india. i agree with the topic starter 100%.

Chewingums,

Good you brought up this subject..u r very right..except for Raja who sang the original folk song version, none of the others qualified as a folk song..

Sumedha sang an adapted filmi version of 'Morni bagha ma', so she was closest..I wish she had sung the folk version though..

I thought Amanat's song was also an adaption of a folk song..please correct me if I am wrong..

I don't know if Aneek's song is an adaption of a folk song, so would'nt comment on that one..

Mussarat's & Poonam's were clearly not folk songs..

I wish they had sung some really classic original folk songs, maza aa jata..but ofcourse, I enjoyed the "singing contest" part of this episode (I mean minus all the other blah blah that went on for 45 min)..

I completely agree that other than Raja....who sang true 'folk song' none others did.
Though this was very good episode in terms singing, Raja was amazing with his adaption of folk song. I have heard a different version too but his singing was so amazing and very very clean.....an essential component for folk music.
It's always a pleasure to hear him sing....... 👏
