Heights of Love
A lot had changed in the past seven months. She had had her closure. Why had he left her? The nagging question no longer plagued her mind. She no longer wished for answers and now there was nothing which held her back, she had in all true sense come through the vicissitudes of her past.
She had stayed back in Delhi for the reason of running away from this city no longer existed. Almost two years ago, she had left her hometown because she couldn't curb the longing felt by her heart to see him given that they would be in the same city . . . just a few minutes away. And knowing that he wouldn't have wished the same, that he wouldn't have wanted to see her, it had slaughtered her heart.
Geet had left behind not her hometown when she shifted to Amritsar, but she had left a part of herself . . . a broken piece of her heart. However, now that part had died and there was no reason for her to run away from herself. She would stay in the city where she grew up; she would stay in the same city where he was . . . Because he was no less than a non entity in her life. A stranger . . . Yes! That was his identity in her life.
She was now, no longer dwelling in the past and she had had a fresh start . . .
It was then that she heard the announcement; Pinky was here.
*****
Seven months had passed by, and every living second was a torture on his soul. His routine remained unchanged; he was indeed a very efficient stalker. Whenever he would see her smile, it just made his day. But then there were times when for a few moments in silence, he watched her standing by the window, blankly staring out. Beyond the calm and serene face, he could in those few moments see the pain. And it killed him day in and day out, remembering just what he had done to her.
For the first time in the past few months he wasn't following her. Pinky would be coming here for Naintara and Rohan's engagement. Annie and Adi had gone with Geet to the air port and so he knew she would be safe. But then he had become so used to just following her around like a fool that it made him restless not doing it this one time. There were times when he felt he had become like a complete psychopath obsessed with her. But he had lost so much in his life and most because of his mistakes he was scared what if something happened to her.
Staring at her smiling picture he cursed himself for the umpteenth time for having hurt her.
*****
"Hey sweetie" Geet chimed as she crushed her friend.
"Missed you so very much" Pinky replied, hugging back with equal force.
"Masi" Pinky heard Meha's cute little voice and as she saw Meha, standing on her two feet, and walking towards her holding some girl's finger, her eyes widened in shock and soon the shock was replaced by immense happiness.
"She started walking" Pinky mumbled.
"Thanks to Annie" Geet replied.
"Hi . . ." the girl with Meha smiled at Pinky. "Anwesha Khurana"
"Khurana" Pinky whispered as understanding dawned upon her. She instantly looked at Geet, as though seeking some answers. Upon receiving an acknowledging look from Geet, Pinky pounced on her, crushing her in a bone crackling embrace. Finally! Geet was with the man who loved her beyond himself.
In the past seven months, Pinky had given up all hope at ever seeing her friend together with the man she loved. She had thought Maan would never make a move beyond silently helping Geet and stalking her like a shadow without so much as making even his essence felt anywhere around her. She had been awfully surprised when Aditya told her about just what the hell Mr-I-Don't-Deserve-Her had been doing.
But by god's grace, things were finally settled. Oh wait! If it was so why hadn't Aditya informed her? He was so dead. One that man wasn't coming back HOME' Amritsar, Ok! Fine she had herself told him to stay here as long as things weren't just right in her friend's life. And now that things were right . . . Why did he not tell her so? Holy crap! Were things actually what she had assumed? As the thought that she may have got it all wrong clicked, the elation she had experienced just moments ago went right into the ditch and her high hopes came shattering down. But then if what she had happily assumed wasn't the case then why on earth was Geet with a Khurana?
"She's Meha's doctor" Geet said, "I wanted to tell you about Meha's progress but then I decided otherwise. You see, your expressions are worth it."
"Oh" Pinky said. She had known about a DAN doctor but then she never did ask Geet the name of the doctor. It did not take her longer than a second to know just who had sent Anwesha to Geet. And now that her brain cells were jumping, she remembered Aditya had tried to tell her something on the lines about six month's back. If only she hadn't snubbed him saying 'Don't tell me anything! I do NOT wish to know what your Boss did this time. I am fed up. Your boss is a lost case and if he actually what' takes a step beyond stalking her' then input me of what-exactly-is-happening there. Until then, I know it all' Geet is happy with her job or so she thinks. Mr-I-Will-be-there-But-you'll-never-know is content following her where ever she goes. Seriously Adi, had it not been for Savitri Dadi I would have told Geet everything because if left on Maan Singh Khurana, he wouldn't ever like E. V. E. R on his own clear her MU or even apologise' Above all, he was wrong so he is guilty and she is an angel and so he won't tell her cause why? He doesn't deserve forgiveness. Bullsh**! For crying out loud, Ta-Da! hasn't he heard to err is human? So yep! Hence forth I do not wish to know what he is up to.' She should have listened to what Adi was telling her. But it wasn't her fault whatsoever. Come on! What was she supposed to listen after hearing that Mr Maan Singh Khurana sneaks in her house to watch her sleep. That was like 'Dude-get-a-grip'. He wouldn't make any effort WHATSOEVER to try and talk with Geet and here Savitri Dadi was hoping that he'd win her back on his own. That was so not happening and pinky could bet on it.
"You ok" Geet said as she clicked her fingers in front of pinky.
'Uh . . . yes I am good . . . Where's Aditya?" Pinky replied.
"Right here" called out Aditya, pecking her on her cheek.
"No PDA" Pinky stated with gritted teeth and flushing face, as she stepped away from Adi. How she hated public display of affection.
And so they headed out of the airport.
*****
Naintara looked at herself in the mirror; she was dressed in blue lightly embroidered saree. A small smile played at her lips as she touched the pearl pendant she was wearing. It was a gift from Rohan when he confessed his love. God she loved him. It was the best feeling ever. She was so happy to have through the darkness which engulfed her life after Dev's betrayal.
When Dev had broken her trust and her heart, a part of her had been scared for her future. She had not the slightest idea if she had it in her to love again. But when Rohan entered her life, everything changed. She stared living again with no fetters holding her back.
Rohan was everything any girl could ever ask for . . . He was a caring friend, a romantic lover, and someone whom she respected from all her heart. She could without any remorse say that he was everything which Dev wasn't. The relationship she had shared with Dev was not a tad bit like what she now had with Rohan. Rohan and her connected at a different level altogether . . . they were best friends first and lovers next. When she had fallen for Dev, it was his charm which attracted her to him. While in Rohan's case it was his genuine behaviour, his friendly nature.
Rohan was the best thing to have happened with her . . . Sometimes second chances at love are the best ones.
"It's time" Geet chimed as she entered the room.
Naintara turned to face her girl friend. She had first met Geet in Rohan's office. That day she had gone to his office to meet him and instead she had seen Geet. She had a soft corner for the girl, because what had happened in Geet's life was indeed too grave. And so she had started a casual conversation with Geet and asked her how she was doing. Later that day, Geet and her had ended up at her place chatting and having a great time. That was how they had become friends and soon Geet was one of her closest friends.
"Oh my god" Geet exclaimed.
"What"
"You look amazing"
"Oh that and I thought you were going to say something was missing"
"Arjun is calling you guys downstairs . . . Its time" Pinky said as she entered the room.
*****
So close yet so far, indeed a clichd line to use but it was real for him. He was physically so near to her yet metaphorically they were miles apart. He admired her from, standing in a far and dark corner of the hall, while she smiled at the just engaged couple dancing to the soft beats of music.
He saw Adi extending his arm forward to Geet, asking her for a dance. It was surprising that Adi asked Geet instead of Pinky who was standing next to Geet. Perhaps even Geet was surprised for her brow raised in question. But soon she smiled as she took his Adi's hand and they walked over to the dance floor. Soon Arjun and Pinky joined the dance floor but all Maan could see was her. The grace she beheld while she swayed to the music was enchanting. The way she tucked the loose stands behind her ear, that one subtle gesture was so enthralling. The way she chuckled when Adi seemingly cracked a joke whilst dancing with her, it filled Maan's heart with joy. He could stand there all his life and just see her smile forever. He was lost in her when he felt a finger poke his arm.
"May I have this Dance Bro" Annie asked.
The way his sister made the cute pleading face, hell he couldn't refuse even if he wanted to.
*****
Arjun and Pinky stopped dancing as Pinky walked over to Adi and Geet. Soon it was her dancing with Adi while Arjun asked Geet.
He danced with his sister but his eye s never leaving the couple dancing few feet away from him. He smiled wryly as he thought to himself that Arjun and Geet indeed made a beautiful couple. Geet was smiling all the while. He could see she was comfortable with Arjun around.
He had known Arjun loved Geet and he also knew Arjun would keep Geet happy. But then again, Geet had shut her heart to any such feeling. Should he be happy that she wasn't yet over him? Or should he be appalled that he was still binding her back and stopping her for embracing a life filled with love. He knew this watching over her wouldn't ever suffice. He just didn't want to accept it. It freaked him out thinking that he might not be able to be around her. He couldn't have handled it. He would never ask for forgiveness because he was undeserving of it. But he could also never let her go.
But it was not about him. It was about Geet.
Geet did not need someone to watch over her more than she needed someone to love her. And that someone was Arjun because Maan wasn't worth an angel who Geet was. And though Maan was sure if he told Geet the reason behind his deeds, she would forgive him without a second thought, he wouldn't do that.
Her eyes twinkled while Arjun twirled her around. Maan wanted to always see that light in her eyes. And the decision was made that moment.
As much as it would kill him to see her as someone else's, her happiness was all that mattered to him. It was him who was holding her back and so it would be him who would set her free. He would talk with her; he should have done long time back. Only that he realised it now, seeing the happiness which took over her when she was with Arjun, made Maan realise he needed to do something. He needed to let go and have her let go.
Annie suddenly stopped dancing as she excused herself, leaving Maan to stand alone. As he was about to step down the dance floor, he noticed even Geet was standing alone. Without any coherent thought he walked over to her as he held hand. Placing her hand over his shoulder he held her by the waist as he pulled a shocked Geet closer to him.
*****
*****
She gasped as she felt his hand hold hers. Her eyes widened in shock as she felt him pull her into him locking his arms around her. For a moment she went blank, but soon as she realised the audacity of man to touch her, anger flared up inside her. She pushed his hands off of her waist as she cringed.
"Please" he urged, holding her back.
"Geet looked away as she struggled against him.
"Just hear me out. I beg of you" He pleaded.
She looked in the eye and almost involuntarily she whispered "Fine"
*****
"Will you please either say or let me go" she bit out in annoyance. He said he wanted her to just hear him out and here he was as silent as though he were mute.
"I'm leaving" she said as she stopped dancing and withdrew her hand from his shoulder.
When she least expected him to say anything he let out "Arjun is a really good guy"
"Excuse me" she exclaimed, utterly shocked at what she had just heard him say.
"He is a very good friend of yours"
"What do you mean?"
"Move on Geet" he choked.
She stared at him in disgust and shock and somewhere even pain. This man, after all that he did, had the god damn nerve to say that to her. Who did he think he was to utter as it pleased him?
"Arjun will make a good companion." He spoke softly.
Her eyes burned with tears and unwavering rage coursed through her. First he broke her heart mercilessly and now he was suggesting her healer for it. She did not know what was greater . . . the hurt or the anger.
"You need someone to be there by your side"
Her hands shook as she tried to control the urge to slap him then and there. How dare he? Who the hell was he to dictate terms to her?
"Arjun will keep you happy."
She fisted her hands looking away in anger. Wasn't it him who bloody created a ruckus in her life because he seemingly couldn't digest Arjun hovering around her?
"Don't punish your own self Geet . . . for my mistakes" He whispered.
Oh great! Now he remembers he made a mistake. "Badi jaldi yaad aagaya you made a mistake." she bit out.
"I am sorry" he mouthed looking at the floor. "I am not worth it. Don't ruin your life cause of me"
"Mind your own business Mr Khurana" She said through gritted teeth.
"Stay in your god damn limits. Who the hell do you think you are? Mind it! You are no one in my life and have no right whatsoever to suggest me what is good for me. Ho kaun tum mere jo tumhari wajay se I will hold back myself. Why will I? Achanak se meri itni fikar kaise ho gayi. Earlier you never cared, what changed now? Pehle toh if I would have died then also tumhe koi farak nahi parta. Keep your fake care in your pocket or best try it out on some other girl. There are a lot of sirens out here. I am sure someone would definitely fall for it. But that someone is not me" she bit out in a single breathe.
"Give Arjun a chance" he whispered yet again.
Great, now his needle was stuck at it! Had this not been her friend's engagement party, she would have definitely yelled at him for poking his nose into her life.
*****
"Please" he hissed. Only he knew how had managed to utter those words. Every word had burned a part of him. He was asking her to love someone else. It wasn't easy to do so. He could read her shock, her anger and her pain. And every passing moment he was only tempted to crush her to him and never let her go but he would not do that. She deserved better.
"I can't believe you are trying to set me up with the guy your sister is in love with"
"WHAT"
"Now don't tell me you didn't know."
"How can . . . but Arjun . . . Annie . . . he lives in Amritsar" He managed to stutter.
"To love someone you don't need them to be in front of you . . . love is a connection between the hearts. And sometimes even after being so close, the heart never loves truly" She spoke the last part much to herself but he did hear it. He knew she doubted his love. He knew she felt he never loved her. And why wouldn't she feel so? She had every right in the world to question his love for he had hurt her so bad. But it still stung his heart somewhere that she thought his love was an illusion.
"I have nothing to say to you." She said, after a minute of silence. "But yes, just so you know, your sister met Arjun four months back when he had come here for a meeting and since then they have been in contact"
That said she walked away while he stood there cold.
*****
"They are impossible" Pinky stated in annoyance as she watched Geet leave the party.
"Yes they are" Annie sighed.
"Did you guys seriously have any doubts with that" Adi stated inviting a scowl from Pinky which was more than enough to shut him for the evening.
*****
Geet angrily paced across her room. Ugh! That man, she hated him. Left her when he felt like it and now he wants to bloody have her love someone else! Her heart is not a toy, done playing with it now hand it over to someone else. That man did not have the decency to give her a proper apology for his whatever actions and here he was trying to suggest her to give away her heart to another man.
She hated him . . . hated him so very much. God damn it! Why did he always have to push her right back where she had started? Every day she woke up with a feel that he was around. How much she hated herself to feel his presence even after knowing he wasn't anywhere near. She kept repeating it to herself he was a stranger to her, but still her defiant heart pinned for him. The amount of strength and courage it took her to keep living . . . And he did have to stab strangle her soul all over again by saying all those things to her today.
No she wouldn't waste her time thinking about him. She screamed frustration as she fell to her knee . . .
And she cried . . .
*****
Ho kaun tum mere jo tumhari wajay se I will hold back myself . . .
Achanak se meri itni fikar kaise ho gayi . . .
Pehle toh if I would have died then also tumhe koi farak nahi parta . . .
To love someone you don't need them to be in front of you . . .
He poured ice cold water over himself as he closed his eyes in pain, trying to shut the disturbing images from his mind. Her questioning eyes, her pained face, her shattered profile . . .
'Damn' he roared as he smashed the bottle onto the ground, spilling the water over the floor. He had hurt her yet again! He was tormented by his mistakes . . . Why didn't he die before he hurt her again? Why did his heart not stop beating the moment he read the hurt in her eyes? God why with her? Why did her life have to be this way? Why did she wish to live in ruins of her past?
They were both destined to be ruined . . . But it was him who brought the hurt down on them.
He walked towards the counter as he lifted a knife . . .
Looking down the past lanes, all he could see were broken fragments of what was once a beautiful relationship.
He brought the knife closer to his shoulder . . .
When he looked back he saw a woman, broken and hurt. He saw her smile, a smile through the tears . . . Living for a young life but dead inside.
Slashing his skin, he ruthlessly dug the knife deep into his shoulder . . .
He had broken her. He had given her tears. He had killed her soul.
Pulling the knife down his arm, he closed his eyes as he felt the blood gush out of his body . . .
He had ruined her and his own life for a lie.
He stabbed his palm and twisted the knife pushing it harder into his skin, boring a hole into his hand . . .
*****
*****
Lying over her back on the bed, she kept her hand at her heart as she felt it pounding against her ribs. A feeling of restlessness seeped through her, clouding her senses. She was so scared . . . So scared but she had no idea why? She twisted in her bed as she stared at the angel peacefully sleeping next to her. Perhaps Meha was having a beautiful, for only that would explain the smile which played at her lips. For the first time in over two years, her baby's smile did nothing to soothe her frenzied nerves. And that freaked Geet out. She had a hunch something wrong' bad' was going to happen.
*****
His arm dripped blood, and he stood cold, watching the dark red liquid drops fall upon the ground. His eyes fell on a bottle of paraffin, kept under the counter and without any coherent thoughts he bent down and grabbed it. With guilt shadowing his good sense, he opened the bottle and emptied it over his arm. Turning on the stove, he lowered his hand over the flame and set it ablaze.
The burning sensation soothed his bleeding soul . . .
"Bro . . ." Annie screamed as she ran inside the kitchen.
*****
Annie sat on the couch as she watched her brother's bandaged arm. Maan had always been someone she had looked up to as a fatherly figure. She was quite young when their parents had passed away. All she remembered about them were broken memories. That was it! But Maan had always been there for her all her life.
And she loved her brother . . . So very much. Seeing him in this state tormented her but she was hapless. There wasn't any which way she could help him. He wouldn't let her. He had called her to India and told her about Meha and asked her if she could help. Of course she could and she would. It was the first time Maan had asked something of her. Dadi ma had already informed about the equation between her brother and Geet. Although she had wanted to tell Geet everything which had happened, her grandmother had strictly commanded her not to do any such thing. And so, she had to watch as her brother destroyed himself in front of her. She knew of his night visits to Geet's house, she knew of him following her, she knew everything but yet she was helpless.
This feeling of not being able to do anything for her elder brother was eating her up inside.
"Geet" she heard Maan mumble in his unconscious state. Fine she couldn't tell Geet anything but she wouldn't sit quite any longer. She would create circumstances which would force Maan to talk with Geet. And so she lifted her cell from the table and punched Geet's number.
*****
*****
"I'll be there" she replied as she cut the call. After updating Pinky on the situation, she left for the hospital. Annie had to go urgently leave for Bangalore and Maan had been chanting her name in his sleep. She had pleaded for Geet to look after him while Annie went to Bangalore. And Geet agreed.
She was doing it because Annie needed her help. She was doing it for Annie. She was doing it for the sake of humanity. She convinced herself that she was doing it because Annie had asked her to. With uncertainty she walked down the hallway of the hospital. The strong smell of God knows how many medicines filled the air and burned her nostrils. Geet felt sick to her stomach as she neared the ward. She convinced herself the tears which threatened to fall from her eyes were because she felt suffocated; the knots in her belly were because she felt sick; her heart was racing because she did not like the ambience of a hospital. No other reason.
She stopped outside the ward where he had been admitted. She had been informed by the nurse Annie had already left. She stared at his sleeping form through the glass. Her hand automatically lifted in air as though in an attempt to try touch him but she pulled it back. Gulping the lump in her throat she looked away, fighting back her tears. Who was she fooling? She was not her for Annie. She was here for him. No matter what, she did not have it in her to see him in such state.
Her eyes fell at his bandaged arm and remembered what Annie had told her. Maan had first slashed his arm and then put it on fire. Why was he hurting himself? She pushed lightly at the door and walked in.
And she sat beside his in silence.
*****
"What the hell do you think you doing" She bellowed as she breezed inside the hospital ward. She had gone out of the ward for just fifteen minutes and when she comes back she meets the horrible sight . . .
Maan was sitting upright on the bed, with his bandage undone . . . And . . . And he was digging his fingers into the blisters which covered his arms. He was pulling at his skin . . . the sight made Geet was to throw up. She ran towards him as she held his hand and roared "Are you out of your mind."
"Oh God . . . the liquid is oozing out." She shrieked as her tears clouded her vision.
"Nurse" she called out in panic.
"I--
"Shut up" she yelled at the top of her voice.
"Not a word until your hand is bandaged again." She said, "Then you owe me an explanation"
*****
A small smile played at his lips seeing her muted care. As the nurse did his dressing, instead of him it was Geet who flinched. She cared! She still did! This mere simple fact elated his heart. He felt no pain; all he could see and feel was her unconditional love. He had been a fool to think she could gain happiness away from him.
He heard a soft snivel. His eyes filled up seeing her concern for him. Standing by her side, Geet had her eyes squeezed shut while she bit her lower lip. The nurse was about to speak up when he gestured her to leave. Geet who was oblivious to the fact that the nurse was no longer present in the room, kept her eyes closed. He got off the bed as he came to stand in front of her. Lifting his hand to her face, his pressed his thumb onto her lower lip thereby stopping her from chewing it. He felt her tense as she snapped open her eyes. For a quiet moment they stared into each other's eyes . . . both had the same emotions etched in them. He moved a step closer to her as he removed his thumb from over her lips and instead cupped her cheek.
"Geet . . ."
Then she seemingly remembered just what the hell he had been doing moments ago. The jerk of a man had the bloody nerve to hurt his own self again.
"What the freaking hell were you thinking slashing your arm?" she breezed.
He smiled listening to her blasting him. Her care was overwhelming to the point where he felt numbed to every other feeling but her love.
His smile only agitated her further as she reprimanded him "You know there are people who may be affected if you bloody god damn hurt yourself. How can one be so inconsiderate?"
His eyes reflected a certain contentment which she couldn't relate to. What on earth could possible make anyone smile in such a situation? He was damned getting on her nerves.
"I AM YELLING AT YOU and you here are smiling shamelessly." She barked, "You're the biggest example of insanity."
"GOD!" she ran a hand through her hair.
"Look at your hand." She cried, "What have you done?"
"Does it hurt" she asked softly, with tears burning her eyes. Smiling he shook his head in negative. She turned away in frustrating and her arm banged into his in the process. She heard him let a painful hiss.
"I'm so sorry. Oh God! It must hurt so much. I am so sorry. I didn't mean to--I sorry. Why are you standing? You are supposed to be resting. I'll get the pain killer--
"I love you" he let out, without so much as a thought.
She froze. Did she hear it right?
"Please forgive me" he said, "I made a mistake by not trusting you. I should have asked you once. Geet I am so sorry."
She now knew where this was heading. But did she want that? The answer would be no. She did not want to discuss anything of the past. It was a dead chapter of her life and she refused to look back at it.
"I need to talk with the doctor" that said she turned to leave only to hear him utter the heart wrenching words "Maan ki Geet Maan ko maaf nahi karegi"
*****
Adi, Pinky, Annie and Arjun stood outside the ward . . . Eavesdropping. Pinky felt like jumping . . . Finally Mr-Stalker decided to speak up. Arjun and Adi heaved a sigh of relief . . . At least some progress. While it was Annie who was still scared, nothing could be said until he told her the entire truth. She would only be happy, when things would finally come around, until then she did not wish to take her hopes and have them crash down.
*****
Maan ki Geet . . . She had been longing to hear that far too long. The two years she spent away from him living in Amritsar, these words were the ones which she fantasised him saying to her. One fine day he would show up and sweep her off her feet and whisper these words and things would be just fine. But as soon as she recalled Meera's dying face she spoke "Maan ki Geet shayad Maan ko maaf kar bhi de" She turned to look at him. Her face emotionless but soon her eyes turned darker and her expressions became grave. "But Meha's mother, Meera's friend, a woman can never forgive you no matter the reason why you left me."
"But I don't want you in my life"
"Geet . . ." he said moving towards her.
"NO" she fought back her tears as she cried.
'Please . . ." he extended his arm forward while she recoiled.
"Stay away" she hissed.
"Don't leave me"
"I hate you" she moved backwards.
"I am so sorry" he took a step in her direction.
"I hate you" she kept walking backwards.
"I'd die without you" he breathed.
"Go die for all I care. Just keep away from my life" she spat without thinking.
"Why are you making my life hell? Are there less problems anyway, that you want poke in. Why can't you just go away? Let me live Maan . . . just let me live MY life" she bit out.
And he walked away with his head hung low. He was making her life hell . . . He would no longer hurt her by his presence.

Hey people . . . so for now that's it! I had planned for writing more but the part is already long. You'd be bored with overdose so m stopping here. Next update will be the last one . . .😆 And wait until and unless i get LONG comments i won't write the next part. This update is way too long for my standard length and not to forget i had updated the previous part yesterday and that was also long. So yes i Demand comments . . . Good bad anything, just comment.
Guys I had been suggested an alternative to PMing a long time back. Like having an account on FB and posting the link there so the readers can get instant notification of updates. But I was quite lazy to make an account for updates alone but I realise I send PM's horribly late, at times after ten to fifteen days of updating do I send out PMs so . . .
