Chapter 20
In Torment ... Part 2
*****
"We are all set . . . all we need to do is just bring him here . . . Hmm . . . will be waiting" Arjun said as he cut the call and closed his eyes as he then, waited for Maan and Savitri Devi to get there.
*****
"Pinky you never told me you own a Penthouse in Delhi" Geet asked as she placed the dishes in the sink.
"Mujhe pata hota toh tujhe batati na" As soon as pinky spoke this, she bit her lips while Geet looked at her in confusion.
"Woh kya hai na Geet, Papa ne mujhe bas kuch din pehle bataya hai iske bare mein. Toh main tujhe kaise batati"
"But—
"Geet leave it sweetie" Pinky said with ignorance. "Kya pharak parta hai"
*****
Savitri Devi cut the call as she moved towards Maan's room. It was going to be a long day.
Upon finding Maan's room empty she headed towards the other rooms of the house. "Kahan ja sakte hain" She said as she looked around for her grandson. She then walked towards the attic; she could only hope he was home.
A gasp left her lips as she saw the appalling sight in front of her. Maan was lying on the ground with bleeding knuckles and holding a white scarf in his fist, she knew who it belonged to. Her grandson was dying every living moment of his life and his only breather was Geet. Looking around the room she saw Geet's photo graphs hung on the wall. She could see anklets and other accessories placed, through the open cabinet. It broke her to know what his grandson had been fighting all along . . . himself. Seeing the belongings of the room, she knew it for sure that he only claimed Geet was nobody for him whereas in reality she was his everything. Savitri vowed to set things right . . . she had to do it and so she would.
Remains of the broken tubes were scattered all over the ground and so were the torn curtains. Avoiding the glass she carefully stepped towards her grandson as she bent on her knee before him. Running a hand over his forehead she spoke "Maan."
"Nakul" she called out.
*****
Pammi saw Savitri force Maan to go along with her. She could sense something fishy. She put up a fake smile as she walked over to Savitri Devi who was by then near the main door. "Ma you going somewhere"
"How many times am I to tell you not to address me as Ma . . . stay in your limits" Savitri Devi replied with abhorrence. The only reason Pammi was still in her house was for her grandchildren, otherwise there was no way Savitri would have even allow that lady anywhere near her house.
Pammi gritted her teeth as she struggled to maintain the smile. "Maan—
"Humein aur Maan ko jazoori kam se jana hai, and we are already running late" that said she got in the car, gesturing Maan to do accompany her.
"Dadi ma . . . my head is blasting, can we not go later" Maan said as he held his temples.
"I did not ask you to drink" Savitri Devi replied curtly.
"Taj hotel" She told the driver as the car raced away. But what she failed to see was that someone was following them.
*****
She passed a fleeting glance at her brother before stepping inside the inn, while her brother nodded softly. Her heart broke with every step she took towards him, but she had to do it. It jabbed a thousand needles into her heart as she saw the state he was in. Seeing the man who was her husband in a fuddled state was weakening her resolve. But then the thought of why she was doing this, made her even firm in her decision. She loved him and there could be no denying the fact but she couldn't ever forgive him. He had betrayed her, and her self esteem did not allow her to even consider forgiving him. All she hoped was that whatever he had done was limited to cheating on her, 'because she doubted if she had it in her to endure anything beyond that. She hoped he was not the reason behind the ruining of Geet's life. She had to help her brother in his quest for the truth and she had agreed to play this little game with Dev. She had told him he would never see her again and that said, she had asked Arjun to chuck dev out of her suite. She knew he couldn't have handled her rejection and to soothe away his agony he would end up drinking. That was all she and her brother had wanted, to get him inebriated and coax him into telling them what all he and Pammi had done.
*****
"Dadi ma what the hell is happening here . . . why we are hiding? . . . what is Naintara—
"Maan . . . please for me, just be here" Savitri Devi pleaded while Maan frowned.
*****
With bated breath she lifted her hand to tap at his shoulders. Plastering a smile on her face she moved in front of him and cupped his cheek as she rasped "I'll come back to you . . ." His face lightened up as he got on his feet but just when he was about to hug her she spoke "If you tell everything you have done . . . I won't hold it against you, I just need to know."
"You'll come back to me if I tell you" He squealed.
Instead of replying directly and truthfully, she mumbled "Tell me Dev" Her heart was racing frantically and her mind frozen. She had no idea what was to come and how hard would it be on her to face the truth. Regardless she would face it . . . whatever it be.
*****
Savitri Devi saw Pammi walking towards Naintara and Dev. "Pammi" she looked at Arjun in worry.
Arjun ran towards Pammi as he stopped her right in time. "Aunty could you come with me . . ." He did not wait for a reply as he practically dragged Pammi after him holding her wrist while she protested. "Sorry aunty" He apologised as he stopped where Savitri and Maan were standing. "But you cannot go to Dev"
Pammi tried freeing her hand from his grip when she heard Savitri Devi say "Stay put Pammi". Arjun left her hand as she balled her fingers haplessly, whilst watching the scene which could potentially prove fatal to all her plans of making Dev the Khurana heir.
*****
"Who is your daughter Dev?"
"If I tell you ... you wouldn't ever come to me"
"You will tell me if you ever loved me"
"Meha . . ."
*****
Maan froze as he heard his brother say the horrific truth. Meha was not Meera and Yash's daughter. But how could that be. Savitri Devi gasped as the realisation that Meha was her blood granddaughter hit her. Arjun felt the earth underneath him snap . . . Meha was Dev's daughter. Pammi slowly moved away from them all as she hideously left the place.
*****
"I forced . . . I forced myself upon Meera"
Naintara's entire world crashed onto her. Never had she even dreamt of dev being a molester, in her wildest nightmares. Was this the man she had loved? She disgusted herself for falling for a man like him. Her fingers itched to slap him and walk out of the place then and there but she had other unanswered questions. But whatever it was, she knew one thing for certain; he couldn't possibly stoop any lower.
"I am so sorry Tara . . . please don't hate me"
*****
Maan's blood boiled at what he heard. His brother . . . no, he couldn't even call him his brother . . . How could Dev? How dare he? Anger flared through Maan as he felt the unwavering hatred ripple through him. He charged towards Dev but he stopped cold in his track when he heard Naintara's next question.
*****
"Did you frame Geet" Naintara asked her final question.
"I . . . please don't hate me" Dev held her cheeks between his palm while she fought back her tears.
"Tell me everything Dev . . ." She stopped as she composed herself and lied through her teeth "I won't hate you if you do but if you don't tell me... we're over"
"I'll tell you everything . . . just never leave me" He hugged her forcefully while her hands remained to her sides. She was on the verge of breaking down but she had to know what all was there to know about the man who was her husband.
"I and Choti Ma . . . we bribed people and asked them to lie . . . I always hated Geet . . . bro had once chucked me out of the house because of her, he trusted her over his own kin. I wanted my revenge" And so he began. He told her how they set the whole thing up and made Maan believe leaving no scope for him not to fall into the trap.
"We separated---
A line of blows were rained onto Dev's face. He stumbled backwards as his hand reached towards his nose which was then dripping blood. He looked up to his brother, baffled and the scared . . . he was terrified.
Naintara gasped as she watched Maan hurl a nasty punch at Dev's face.
Maan was a man long gone. He whacked his younger brother in the stomach as bit out "How dare you". His eyes spelled unimaginable rage which could burn anyone alive. He was tormented by his own actions. He swiped at Dev as Dev fell back, hitting his head on the bar counter. Maan's jaw tightened as his forehead wrinkled with lines of fury. Hauling Dev by the collar, Maan yanked him hard on the face as he bit out "You Bas---
"Maan" Savitri Devi called out.
Maan turned to look at his grandmother, who was in a pool of tears and her eyes pleaded him to stop. With one final blow, Dev passed out as he fell on the ground unconscious. Arjun had pull back Maan from beating Dev to death.
"Leave me" Maan roared.
"It was your fault as well" Arjun spat pitilessly.
Maan froze.
"Your love wasn't strong enough . . . you did NOT once feel it necessary to confront her."
Arjun was right. Maan couldn't blame anyone for what had happened was a lapse from his side . . . His trust fell apart. No one could have instigated him, had he not made himself vulnerable to them. He had let others run the course of his life. He stepped backwards as his own words hit him like a thousand daggers.
"I don't want you in my life"
She was all he had ever wanted and yet he drove her away.
"You're a mistake that I made"
No . . . No . . . she wasn't a mistake. She was the best thing to have ever happened to him.
"We're over"
He did not want to know how she would have felt when he said those words to her.
"I hate you"
How could he have said that to her? When did he become so inhumane? Not only did he break her heart he also trampled upon the broken pieces.
"Do you even know what she went through" Arjun bit out.
Maan wanted the sky to fall onto him and crush him ruthlessly. He did not have it in him to even contemplate what she would have gone through. She was scared to fall in love as she dreaded the day she would end up hurting him, a girl so pure, and he gave her nothing but pain. She was the shining star in his life, and he swiped that shine away from her, leaving only darkness in her life.
"Do you know she would cry sitting alone in the office when she thought no one was seeing her"
Maan looked at Arjun, his eyes begged for Arjun not to say a word more. He couldn't have handled it. He remembered her tear streamed face when she running after him. He remembered her falling to his feet. He remembered walking away. He remembered the beast he had become in his so called revenge.
"She did not have a place to live, when she came to Amritsar. Had it not been for Pinky, probably Geet would have ended up living on the streets with a few days old Meha."
His Geet, who deserved to be treated as a princess for she was an angel incarnate, had nowhere to call home . . . and all so because of him. He had forced misfortune over her, who was the sole reason of happiness in his life.
"For months she wandered round, trying to secure a job, so that she could fend for herself and her daughter. When she came for the interview, she had burns on her palm as she'd fell on the scorching cement while getting out of the auto"
She was the sun that brightened up his life and having to realise she had run around looking for jobs . . . Maan wanted to burn himself alive for having inflicted such hurt on his Geet. She had to endure so much for his lack of trust in her.
"She—
"Please" Maan begged. He couldn't have had heard a word more.
"Why are you backing out on the consequences of your mistake . . . Oops sorry mistrust" Arjun smirked "Did you ever truly love her"
"Please stop" Maan moved backwards as he realised the full implications of his mistrust. They had cost him his life . . . his Geet.
"She loved you and you killed her soul"
"GEET" Maan thundered as he clutched his hair.
No . . . God! What had he done? Could he ever undo what had transpired? Should he be given a chance to undo? He turned away as he left.
******
Savitri Devi cried as she thought of both her grandsons . . . one who was responsible for ruining four lives and the other who was ruined. As she looked at Dev, who was bleeding profusely lying on the ground, she was forced to question her upbringing . . . Kiran's upbringing. But turns out, blood was indeed thicker than water Dev was after all her Viraat and Pammi's son. Now that she knew the truth . . . she feared it was a bit too late for redemption.
******
He walked aimlessly outside the hotel and into the lonely lanes . . . his life was now broken beyond repair. The gravity of his horrendous actions struck him like bolt of lightning, shaking him to the very core of his existence. His heart now felt heavily burdened under guilt as though it were being crushed by some inane force.
The guilt that he had knowingly, inflicted pain upon his Geet wrenched his very being. What had he done? He wanted to beg for her forgiveness. But would she forgive him? Should she forgive him? Hell no! He deserved to rot in hell, in the hell that his life was . . . a man made hell. Tears streamed down his face as he felt the bile rise in his throat. He wanted to scream out his heart but all he could do was weep.
He had let other's come between them . . . he had let himself be manipulated when he should have known better. Two years had gone waste . . . two years of living in hell were all for nothing . . . for a bloody lie he destroyed everything which was once his and could have been his. He wanted to be punished and he should be punished. He knew he deserved no mercy for what he did to her and their love was unpardonable. But he was human after all, and he'd been blinded by his rage that he couldn't see the obvious. How could an angel have been wrong? How could he have disregarded what his heart cried? How could he become such a heartless monster? His Geet cried, she pleaded him to just let her know her fault but he cared a shit about that all. And now, he needed to see her . . . once . . . he wanted to fall at her knees and beg forgiveness for his sin of not trusting her . . . for hurting her . . . for taking undue vengeance on her.
And so, with the resolve of pleading forgiveness, he turned just as he came face to face with his life . . . which he had ruined with his unacceptable and false fury. He walked towards her with bloodshot eyes which revealed the torment in his mind. As he neared her, he felt his legs go numb and with each step he took towards her, his guilt feasted upon his soul like a deadly predator. He dared look in her eyes . . . he was afraid what he might see in them . . . the pain he had set there.
He fell to her feet . . . defeated. "Maan", he heard her voice whisper and he hugged her. Digging his face in her stomach, he wrapped his hands round her waist. He mumbled, crying "I am sorry". He was a man in torment and only she could soothe away his pain.
Precap: "Dadi Ma, please... stop her... she can't leave me..."
Hugging Savitri's waist and hiding his face in her stomach he cried "Dadi Ma Geet"
