Prologue: Part 1
June 5, 2009Everything around him was spinning. He couldn't walk straight. Even he was amazed with himself when he finally got the door to his brand new black BMW, that he decided he should buy for himself since he had worked so hard for that promotion, open and the key in the ignition. He backed out of the parking space rather carelessly, pushed the gas pedal, thrusting as much of his weight and power as he could into it and charged through the streets, not stopping for even one red light. He thought he heard the sirens of a police car and saw red and blue lights flashing behind him. He didn't care. This was his day to celebrate, and he wasn't going to let anyone ruin it. He continued to speed through the intersections, swerving from the right lane to the left and back and completely ignored the police behind him. He tried to think back to remember how many drinks he had drunk, but he couldn't remember. All he remembered was handing his credit card over to the bar tender and throwing almost all the cash he had in his wallet on the table as his bartender's tip. He turned back to see if the police were still following him, wondering how long they could possibly follow him. He turned back to see what was in front of him. All it took was one second. He saw flashes of white lights in front of his car, but he couldn't make out what exactly it was. He heard car horns going off in every direction, but that didn't make a difference to him. He kept driving forward, until his car hit against something hard, forcing his car to come to a forced stop. He felt his body thrust against the steering wheel at the sudden stop and he felt a sharp piercing pain on his forehead. He opened his eyes, but everything was still blurry. Two strong hands pulled him out of his seat onto a stretcher. He turned to look at what he had hit. He saw a completely wrecked car and another man being pulled onto a stretcher. He felt tired and weak. He closed his eyes, not knowing how his life was going to change forever, how he had changed so many other lives, or how he had brought one to an end.
He had tried so hard to drive away from that out of control car that had been speeding towards him, but he couldn't. It had all happened too fast. He hurt everywhere. He couldn't open his eyes. He heard sirens and panicking as he was rushed through the hospital doors. Never had he thought, in all his years at this hospital, that he would be on the other end, that he would be the patient being rushed into the emergency room. He tried to move, but he couldn't. He felt weak. He could feel the blood flow out if him. His head hurt like crazy. "Extreme blood loss," he thought to himself. He could feel a severe pain in his right leg. "Major fracture in the right leg." He knew he wasn't going to make it. He felt like taking a much needed long nap to recover. He could hear voices now, familiar voices. He smiled knowing that the people who loved him were around him. He wondered if she was there.
Never in her life had she thought she would see him on a stretcher like that, laying on a pool of blood, his blood, fighting for his life. Never in her life had she thought she was the one who would have to treat him in the condition. Her hands shook for the first time as she leaned in closer to him to give him advanced cardiac life support. She couldn't hold the equipment straight. She couldn't press it against his chest. She just couldn't do it. The doctor behind her grabbed her and pushed her to the side and began pressed the ACLS equipment to the man himself as quickly as possible as the other nurses cleaned and bandaged his wounds. She stood in the back of the emergency room, feeling helpless. She was a doctor, and she couldn't even help him. He forced his eyes to open. Her eyes met his. There was something in his eyes. He wanted to tell her something, one last thing. She couldn't understand what it was that he was trying to communicate to her. His soft pink lips formed a slight smile. At least he had seen her. Suddenly his eyes opened even wider as he drew in his last breath and his tight fist loosened, revealing a diamond ring, the ring he had designed specially for her. She felt her knees give way and she collapsed to the ground.
