Chapter 1
January 5, 2010 Geet dragged her three enormous bags out of the back seat of the taxi. "Thanks, Bhaiyya," she said, handing the money to the driver. She turned around to look at the mansion. Her lips formed a small smile as she immersed herself in all those sweet memories, back when they were all here together. Her thoughts were disturbed by a sudden pat on her back.
"Geet Ma'am?"
"Nakul!" she said, turning around to face the servant. "How have you been?"
"I'm as good as always," he replied cheerfully. "But where were you? Dadimaa thought you were coming yesterday," his tone was becoming stern. "We were all so worried!"
Geet actually smiled properly for the first time in seven months. This is why she loved it here. Everyone, from the servants to dadi, was always so caring and thoughtful of everyone else. She always felt like she was around home when she was here. "Actually, Bhaiyya, my flight got delayed. You know, snow storms and stuff in the winter...the planes couldn't take off. So I got here late. I meant to call, but my phone ran out of battery," she replied, trying to bring Nakul back into his usual cheerful mood.
"You and your snowstorms! I've told you so many times, why don't you just move here? Anyways, it would have been nice if Arj- " he stopped and looked at Geet apologetically.
The small smile on Geet's face faded. Geet knew Nakul hadn't intentionally brought up the subject. It just sort of slipped out of his mouth. She could see it in his eyes. "It's okay," she nodded to Nakul."
"Umm, I'll take in your bags then, Ma'am," he said awkwardly. Geet watched Nakul effortlessly place her three massive bags on his head and walk in through the front door.
Geet closed her eyes tightly as the sudden evening breeze stroked her face. Suddenly, she thought she could hear his laughter, she thought she could feel him right next to her, she could even see him. Arjun. She opened her eyes, which were slowly filling with tears. She softly caressed the small diamond ring she wore on her ring finger. Taking a deep breath, she turned to the door and stepped into the house.
Geet wiped away the few tears that had escaped her eyes as she walked in. She didn't want anyone to see her cry. Tightening her grip on her backpack, she turned to go through the hallway that led to the staircase. Instead she came face to face with a woman she had never seen before. "Oh!" Geet gasped. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you there."
Sasha stared at Geet in disbelief. She examined Geet from top to bottom. Geet was wearing a light green salwar suit. She had the two ends of her dupatta tied at her right hip. Her thick long black hair was braided neatly and rested over her left shoulder. "What the hell?" Sasha finally said, after staring at Geet for at least two minutes.
Geet was confused. "Umm, are you okay?"
"What the hell are you doing here?" Sasha finally said. "And what's with the clothes?" she questioned.
Geet looked down at her salwar and fingered her braid and then at the woman's red short sleeveless dress. She really wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone right now. "I live here." she told the woman. Geet was even more confused when she saw the shock on the woman's face. "And I'll wear whatever I want. What's it to you?"
"You,
you, live here? Since when?"
"Look, umm...what's your name by the way?" Geet questioned closing her eyes. Sasha opened her mouth to tell Geet, but she cut her off. "Anyways, my point is I really do live here, believe it or not, and I'm really tired. It's been a long trip, and I really want to go to sleep. So if you'll excuse me..." Geet walked around Sasha and started walking up the stairs.
"Geet?" a voice called from behind them.
"Dadi!" Geet said, turning back to face her.
"Geet?" Sasha was thoroughly confused.
"Geet! When did you get here?" Dadi asked.
"Just now," Geet answered, bending down to touch her feet.
Dadi's cheerful face suddenly turned serious. "So how have you been? Vicky told me you didn't even go to the hospital for three months and when you did start going to work again, you didn't even see patients? He said you moved to a completely different department and just looked over medical reports and suggested what treatments should be given? Is that what you're planning on doing here as well?"
The smile on Geet's face was gone now too. "I don't know dadi, I just can't do it anymore. I don't think I have it in me anymore," she said turning away. "I was offered the position in the emergency room, but I didn't take it. I'm going to be more like a supervisor sort of person."
"What are you talking about? You were one of the best doctors in the emergency room!"
"I know, but after that day. I don't know what happened to me. I couldn't even hold the equipment straight. When I saw him like that..." Geet began to silently cry.
Dadi placed her hands on Geet's shoulders. "Geet beta, you have to move on with your life. It's done. He's gone. And it wasn't your fault," dadi tried to calm Geet. "Vicky told me it was impossible to save him. It was already too late."
"Yes it was!" Geet cried. "Yes it was my fault! Maybe I could have done something before it was too late, but I froze. I couldn't think properly. I..."
"Geet, it's been seven months. I'm not asking you to forget about him. I'm just asking you to get on with your life and do everything normally. I'm sure he wouldn't want to see you like this. No one does."
"I cant dadi! I've tried. I tired so many times after that day, but my hands shake every time I try to do something. It's so difficult without him around anymore. How am I supposed to move on? I love him!"
"Geet -"
"Dadi, he was going to propose to me that day!" Geet ran off crying.
