Chapter 3 That night, Maan was surprised to see Geet come down for dinner. He thought she would be sleeping for the rest of the day and night, and maybe, just maybe, wake up the next morning. He had never seen anyone sleep so much in his life. Her hair was combed back into a neat ponytail and she was dressed in a dark blue salwar suit and she wore her dupatta around her neck. "Well, at least she looks better now," Maan thought.
"Hi dadi," Geet said, completely ignoring Maan. She was still angry with him for what he had done that afternoon.
"Come sit, beta," dadi said, pointing to the seat next to her. "By the way Geet, this is Maan, my oldest grandson. I don't think you've met before," she told Geet. "He never vists,"dadi whispered when she thought Maan wasn't listening.
"You know I never have the time, dadi," Maan said.
"Anyways, he lives in New York, but I finally got him to move here to take care of the business," she said smiling. "And Maan, this is Geet, Vicky's best friend. She's the one who is going to stay with us for a year, so be nice and treat her like family," she told Maan. "Actually I take that back. Treat her like a guest. I don't want you yelling at her."
"Very funny, dadi. Actually, we have met dadi," Maan started.
"He basically barged into my room this morning – "Geet cut him off.
"Afternoon."
"Morning, afternoon, same thing." Geet replied. "The point is, I was sleeping, and Mr. Maan Singh Khurana here decided he could just walk in. He ended up pulling me onto the ground, and must I mention, he also called me ugly."
"I did not call you ugly."
"Yes, you did."
"I just said you're not very attractive in the morning."
"They translate as the same thing," Geet said coldly.
"Okay, okay, enough with the introductions. How about we eat then?" Dadi interrupted, placing sandwiches on their plates. Maan and Geet both gave each other cold looks before looking down at their food. They ignored each other the entire time. Once in a while they would argue through dadi, until dadi herself got fed up and decided to go to her room, leaving Maan and Geet together at the table, alone. Geet couldn't stand sitting there alone with Maan, so she quickly finished and went to clean her plate, of course, giving Maan the evil eye before disappearing into the kitchen.
As she was washing her plate, she heard Maan walk in to the kitchen as well. Geet began humming randomly, acting as if she hadn't seen Maan. Rolling his eyes, Maan dropped his plate into the sink and turned to leave.
"And where do you think you're going?" Geet asked.
Maan turned around to see Geet watching him with one eyebrow raised and her hands at her hips.
"What does it look like? I'm going back to my office."
"Right, and who do you think is going to wash your plate?" she asked.
"Who's the one at the sink already?" he said.
"I'm not cleaning it for you," she turned back to the sink to rinse off her plate. "What do I look like to you? Your maid?"
"Not exactly what I was thinking, but that works too," he sarcastically smiled at her.
"Who do you think you aaahh!" Before she knew it (again), Geet had slipped on some water she had spilled on the floor and was now in Maan's arms. She closed he eyes tightly and wrapped her arms around Maan's neck. She felt his long fingers grip her waist tightly while his other hand grasped her hand, preventing her from falling. Geet continued to tighten her grip around Maan's neck until she was almost hugging him, while Maan pulled Geet closer to him protectively. By now, Maan had pulled Geet onto her feet and she was fully capable of standing on her own, but they still stood there in each other's arms. After her breathing had calmed down and her heartbeat was back to normal, Geet slowly opened her eyes and realized she was still in Maan's arms. "I'm okay now, Maan," she quietly told him.
"Oh." Maan slowly loosened his grip on Geet's waist and stepped back. Geet clumsily fixed her dupatta. They both stood there, awkwardly looking at each other in silence.
"Umm, I'm going to head back to my room," Geet backed out of the kitchen slowly and then sprinted up to her room.
Maan didn't know what to do. He just stood there in the kitchen.
What had he just done? For God's sake, he just met the girl today, fought with her, and just almost hugged her? He hated women. For the past seven months, he'd been keeping himself away from women as much as he possibly could. He even hated how dadi had set up a work-from-home office at their house (which was part of her plan to keep Maan close) because all the girls in the office would stare at him all the time. And those two girls, Sasha and Tasha, wouldn't leave a chance to be at his side. But, Geet. Why had he held on to her so tight? Why had he pulled her so close to him?
Geet sat on her bed thinking about what had just happened. This whole talkative and quarrelsome attitude…she hadn't acted like that in seven months. After Arjun's death, she'd become quiet and kept to herself most of the time. She usually only talked to Vicky, and sometimes her other friends at the hospital. She wouldn't even let her parents move to Chicago and stay with her because she wanted to be alone all the time. But now, suddenly she was back to her talkative self. How? And for some reason she had felt protected when he held her. When he held her, she knew she wasn't going to fall, but she had gripped even tighter anyways. Why?
"Don't think about it Geet. You slipped, and he caught you. That's it! Go to sleep!" she scolded herself, pulled the covers over herself, and twisted and turned for an hour before finally falling asleep. On the other side of the mansion, Maan was doing the same.
