FILM: KAISE KAHEN
'Kaise Kahe' is a modern-day love story that pits romance against career. The young men and women today are very determined to concentrate on their careers and make their millions as soon as possible. Love may not be part of their immediate agenda but it doesn't come with a warning either.

What happens when love breaks into the lives of two career-centric people?

Rahul is a young banker with a very bright future. Radhika is a hardcore Sahara Samay TV journalist. They fall in love, deeply in love, but that love is negotiated around the demands of their work. Their careers remain the priority.

Can careers survive love? Can love survive career demands?

Poonam Joshi going on vacation

Going on vacation

Usually one would associate vacationing with busy people. But it looks like Poonam Joshi is on a forced vacation these days… or like some may like to put it, 'on an extended break'. Not so long ago, the actress rubbed Balaji Telefilms the wrong way and not surprisingly is out of work presently. Poonam used to play a minor character Mehek in Kahiin To Hoga… till of course she got an opportunity to play the main lead in Tumhari Disha. But the job jumping came at a price. The Balaji lawyers spared no time in slapping a lawsuit against her. As luck would have it, Tumhari Disha is also supposed to wrap up in August. So now without any roles in hand, Poonam has decided to pack her bags… temporarily of course and go on a break. "I will go on a long vacation and use this time to rejuvenate myself. I'll come back and then take up fresh work," she says.

Twinkle Back In The Parlour

New owner: Dimple Inamdar

The SAB show is being re-launched with a brand new cast of characters
Tushar Joshi
tushar.joshi@mid-day.com

They launched it with a big bang and even bigger billboards with mustachioed women across town. But soon enough, Twinkle Beauty Parlour ran into trouble. The TRPs didn't register and so the channel decided to get a new cast for a revamped show. Now that the controversy surrounding the sudden ouster of 22 actors on the show has died down, SAB is gearing up to bring the twinkle back into the parlour. Shrishti Arya's Twinkle Beauty Parlour will be back on July 24.
Twist of youth
The new cast is a mixed bag of well-known and unknown names. Confirming the cast, Priya Mishra, programming head says, "We have Chavvi Hussein, Dimple Inamdar, Seema Mishra, Sakshi Talwar and Sulbha Arya in the new avatar of the show."
What prompted them to make changes in the first place? "We are looking at roping in the youth to watch our show. The new Twinkle will retain the core essence, and at the same time making the content more real. It will be bright, funky, full of life and very vibrant. We will also have the element of drama with the problems these characters face. However, since they are young, these will be issues that are different than the ones the adults face."
Positive spin
Shrishti throws light on the new developments. "Even though it's a brand new show, we haven't really changed or played around with the theme. The new cast is interesting because they are playing characters that are totally different from what they attempted before."
Chavvi Hussein, was previously seen in the lead role of Tumhari Disha, says, "I'm playing the role of Damini, who is quite a cynical person. She is an extremely positive person but has traits of negativity as well. After going through a lot of hardship in her life, she has changed her attitude towards it."

What next? Poonam Joshi

No show for Poonam
Poonam Joshi, who plays Mahek in Kahiin Toh Hoga (and is one of Ekta Kapoor's discoveries), has quit the show. Joshi felt that her role was headed nowhere and hence she took on Tumhari Disha as the lead. But unfortunately for her, the daily show is soon going off air in August.
So Poonam is now looking out for new projects and recently got a new portfolio shot. Have a dekko at her latest pics. Balaji hasn't found a replacement for her on the show yet, so we wonder if Ekta will persuade her to continue on the show. Or maybe, she might just let her go the Rajeev Khandelwal way. We'll keep you posted on that front.

Twinkle Beauty Parlour gets a revamp!

Tellychakkar.com - 6/29/2006

One has heard of shows going in for a revamp after a year or two , but then what's with Sab TV's Twinkle Beauty Parlour? Just after a month and a half after its launch, the show is being revamped already. And surprisingly the primetime show Twinkle..which was launched with much fanfare to replace MaahiVe, was in news not just for its unusual star cast but also for its offbeat storyline.

Not just this but as sources reveal the channel had gone ahead to promote the show with a huge 5 crores spent on the publicity of the show. But, the channel is now readying to get a new star cast and shift the focus from the lives of the middle class women in the downtown housing locality (Lajpat Nagar in Delhi) and focus only on the parlour and the new people in the show.

The old star cast is obviously very hurt. Rajev Paul who plays Smita's husband in the show thinks that the channel has been unprofessional and unethical. He said, "It's unfortunate but true that we had to leave the show and it's the channels decision but I am extremely hurt, though the show has been a learning experience for us. We were not told about the decision in advance and day before yesterday Smita and myself got a shock when we got our scenes which read that we had to leave for London. "

We found out that the entire cast and crew is reeling under the shock and is clueless.A rather furious Rajev said, "If the actors had walked out of a show, the channel would've sued the actors. I wish the channel had been more responsible and were courteous enough to give us a notice about the same in advance. Considering the show was going great guns and we have been getting a tremendous response for the show, it simply reflects badly on the channel. Also, I took up the role as Shrishti is a dear friend of mine and I am sure she tried her best to retain us. I was happy to be a part of Twinkle... and its given me a standing in the market and I will always be there for Shrishti no matter what," points out Rajev Paul who declined a couple of offers before taking up Twinkle.

On a rather diplomatic role, Smita Bansal who plays a housewife in the serial said, "It was the channels call and they wanted the entire cast to be changed. So, probably the show will be revamped and will go ahead with a different concept." Though people close to the actress told us that she too has been rather furious about the whole episode but then continued to say, 'It doesn't matter as these days alterations are common in every show besides I had a lovely experience shooting with the unit."

Simple Kaul who's currently shooting in Malaysia was told about the same by colleagues Maninee and Smita besides she also received a message from the production house. For now only Narayani is being retained while there's no clarity about the other characters played by Smita Bansal, Rajev Paul, Maninee Mishra and Simple Kaul.

When we queried the channel about the current revamp of Twinkle, Sab TV programming head, Priya Mishra had a different side to the story, "We are taking the story in a different direction and the focus has changed on the parlour and it won't be about the people in the parlour. We have retained everyone in the show and they will be revived back later in the show and this is the advantage of television. It's just that we have shifted the focus and if the actors think they are out of the show then they are simply not getting the point."

The channel is now in the process of finalising a fresh cast and the channel is rumoured to change into a younger profile soon with the launch of a few more shows.

Sab senior vice president and business head Vikas Bahl gave a totally different side to the story. He said, " We have a huge twist planned for the show. The parlour will be the centre stage and the other characters will keep fading in and fading out of the show besides we will have new characters coming in and we have planned this with the launch of our new show Left Right Left on 10 July."

But doesn't one see such changes in shows after a long period of time? To which he said, "Some of the characters might come back and some might not which will hurt the actors and the new ones will take precedence over the old characters and we have to keep giving such twists to keep the show fresh and give it a new flavour,"said Bahl.

While producer Shrishti Behl and directors Tamara Ranganathan and Swapna Waghmare Joshi were unavailable for comments. We only hope that the new star cast comes in with a longer expiry date...

Twinkle Beauty Parlours may go off air

Ranjib Mazumder

The controversy-ridden tele-serial, Twinkle Beauty Parlour on Sab TV, has yet another surprise for the audiences. The show might soon go off air due to poor TRPs and a lukewarm response from the audience. However, the producer of the show, Shrishti Arya is still eager to make the serial a hit, come what may. "We have recently revamped the show with an entire new star cast. The storyline has also been changed. Even if the channel decides to stop airing the show, I have to be informed one month in advance," says Arya when contacted for a comment.

But Priya Mishra, the programming head of Sab TV didn't deny the news. "We are yet to decide if we are going to take the show off air. It is true that the TRPs of the show have fallen drastically, but we are striving hard to make it better," she says.

Twinkle Beauty Parlour, which was launched amidst much fanfare with actors like Narayani Shastri and Manini Mishra in the lead, failed to impress the audience with its approach. Even after subsequent changes, it failed to score with the audience.

So what really went wrong? To this Mishra says, "Initially, it was made to cater to viewers belonging to the older age bracket. But, after a while we decided for a face-lift to rope in the younger lot. The show is only a few months old and therefore it would be unfair to judge its success so early at this stage. It is really difficult to say why the show is not doing well. Maybe the audience can't relate to so many powerful protagonists at a time."

Narayani Shastri, who walked out of the show just before it underwent change refused to comment.

Vaani replaces Poonam Joshi in Kahiin To Hoga

Actor Poonam Joshi, aka Mehek of Kahiin To Hoga, quit the show recently. Apparently, the actor claims that she was bored of playing the same character for over three years. She has now been replaced with Vaani Sharma who has acted in serials like Saath Rahega Always. Since Poonam decided to quit the show the production house was hunting for a new face. Various actors were considered for the role, but finally Vaani bagged the role. Earlier when Rajeev Khandelwal, who played Sujal, quit the show, his replacement Gurpreet Singh had a tough time. Not only did the actor have to face high expectations of the audience, but he apparently also had a tough time getting along with the rest of the cast. Hope Vaani has a smoother ride...

Pallavi joins Balaji

Chaitanya Padukone
Wednesday, August 16, 2006 19:15 IST

With her latest venture 'Karam Apnaa Apnaa',( Star Plus) being currently shot in Kolkata against a Bengali backdrop, this time producer Ektaa Kapoor has trained her sights on the culture of the north-east.

Curiously enough, the girl who plays the central character Gauri , is not from Kolkata but is a Maharashtrian model-turned-actor Pallavi Subhash. The show also has Sumeet Sachdev (Gomzi of 'Kyunkii…') playing her fianc.

Pallavi has to her credit nearly a dozen Marathi films and TV serials. She was even nominated for the 'Best Actress Zee Gaurav Award' for her performance in the film 'Kumkum Zaala Vairi'.

Speaking from Kolkata, Pallavi who recently played Preeta in 'Tumhari Disha' (Zee) can't believe that she is part of a Balaji show.

"It's a dream come true for me. Apparently, Ektaaji noticed me in 'Tumhari Disha' and instantly felt that she had found her Gauri. I was immediately asked to get ready to fly to Kolkata. I didn't even have to visit the Balaji studios for the mandatory auditions. Also, I have always been enamored by Bengali culture and I freak out on their mishti (sweets)," Pallavi gushes.

As Gauri, the actor is clad in full-sleeved salwar kameez and wears minimum make-up.

"I could connect easily with Gauri as I believe in a simple lifestyle and have a chulbuli yet sober temperament. My character is not required to use a regional accent except for a few Bengali phrases. But my biggest challenge is living up to Ektaaji's expectations," informs Pallavi.

When asked which female character from the Balaji shows is her favourite, Pallavi reveals, "It's Prerna (Shweta Tiwari) from 'Kasautii Zindagi Kay'."

After two years and 450 episodes curtains have finally come down on Tumhari Disha. Though the show was given a generation leap the TRPs didn't live up to expectations. But according to the serial's chief protagonist Ashish Nayyar, the TRPs were not the issue.

"Like most Zee serials Tumhari Disha was averaging 1.2 TVRs which is normal by Zee standards. But then it was the longest running show on Zee and it was the channel's call to close it down," he says. Whatever the case may be, for Ashish it was a great learning experience. In fact he says his reel life character DK and he shared a lot of similarities. "Like me, DK also lost his father quite early in life. Like me, DK also lost his mother because of cancer. And like DK, I am also into business."

Although open to good TV offers, right now he is concentrating on his business venture and putting his MBA in marketing to good use. Three years ago when he was on holiday in Goa he fell in love with the place.

So he thought, "Why not open a small beach resort there?" Last year he opened a nine-hut resort called Chattai at Palolem beach and now he is planning a small township of 50 beach houses, each of 1300 sq. ft at Palolem called The Village. "Work will start in October and it's a partnership venture between me, my wife Kumudha (a regional manager in an ad agency in Mumbai) and my brother-in-law who is an architect," he informs.

Manish sets a record

Manish Raisinghania sets record by staying awake for six nights and seven days at a stretch

Aditi Jayakar Kane

With television actors collapsing every other day due to physical and mental exertion, Manish Singhania emerges as the new Superman. Manish, who is currently acting in Kahiin to Hoga and Tumhari Disha simultaneously has been working for seven days continuously, without a wink of sleep! Manish says, "Yeah, I shot for 12 hours on the sets of Kahiin To Hoga and then for another 12 hours in the night for Tumhari Disha. I shot continuously for 7 days then had about 6 hours of sleep. It is really a crazy schedule that I am following at the moment. I don't sleep between shots. But once I do, I don't get up easily."

But what about his health? "Earlier my eyes used to pain and I got tired, but now I'm used to it," he says. "I have a good diet and drink plenty of water. I think that is the secret of my health. The only problem that troubles me is the dark circles which have developed due to lack of sleep. Now, I have to wear make up to hide my dark circles, something I don't need otherwise!" Manish thanks his engineering days for this tremendous working capacity. "I was always a last minute student and invariably stayed awake for long hours before the exams," he says. Manish is practically living in his car as of now. "I have everything I need, put in my dickey. It's my new home. I have my perfume, my shoes, my clothes, my laptop, even my cricket bat! And I go to my vanity van to take my bath." And his hard work has not gone unnoticed. He says that the Balaji schedulers who are otherwise very reluctant to change the schedules have shifted their entire schedules for the night, so that he can take time out for Tumhari Disha. "It is so kind of them. Imagine all the actors, including women and children coming in the might just because I can't shoot during the day. I am honoured. Didn't he have any trouble convincing the actors to shoot at night? "Though some of actors were reluctant to cooperate, I have convinced them," adds Manish.

Till when are these crazy schedules going to continue? "It's getting a bit easier now since Tumhari Disha is going off air but I've been shooting for catalogs and ads, so it's still hectic. But I have no issues. I love Ekta's style of working round the clock and I enjoy my work to the hilt," he says.

So is he on his way to create a world record? "There are several people in Balaji who have broken my record already," he laughs. And his advice for the actors who faint or fall ill on the sets? "Go to sleep," he says earnestly.
