Chapter 5 - Of Truths and Lies
He trekked to the cottage, the Kashmiri mountains standing tall and proud around him. The bitter chill of the piercing winter served to be brutal to most, but his soul was very much alight and blazing with her kiss.
She hadn't given him a chance to respond before she pulled away, realising what she had done. He had attempted to reassure her by reaching out for her hand, but her temporary recklessness had shaken her to the core; resulting her in pushing him out of the door, bolting it firmly shut.
He hadn't even had a chance to say goodbye.
The familiar female figure was noticeable from the window, and a ghost of a smile played on his lips as he watched her rush from the window. The door opened, and he was pulled into a hug.
"It is so good to see you," she muffled into his shoulder.
"You too, Naina."
...
"How is she?"
They were settled on the carpet by the fireplace, nursing small cups of chai. Naina sat facing the front; her husband on one side and brother in law on the other.
"She's not coping well. At all." Maan's gaze flickered to Dev, who stared down into the cup blankly.
"My heart aches for her. Every time I put myself in her shoes, I feel every fibre of my being clench." Naina's sympathy turned into disdain. "How could you do this to her?"
"She brought it upon herself."
"You meddled with her life."
"And you didn't? The root of the problem is you."
"Of course it is, just like everything else that goes wrong on the universe."
He stood up, placing the chai on the table. "I need some fresh air."
"Maan, wait!" Naina called after him, but he had disappeared through the archway.
She shot a cold look at Dev, who sighed and threw his head back against the armchair which he had been leaning against.
"I'm going to check on Ayaan," she said, taking her chai with her and leaving her husband to battle with the demons of his mind.
