There was a scream.
At first, Maan thought it was from somewhere outside, so he turned back over onto the uncomfortable couch and tried to sleep.
But the scream was louder this time, and it was from her.
Throwing the covers off, he dashed upstairs taking two steps at a time. Her bedroom door was left ajar, so he quickly stepped in to find her in the throes of a nightmare - she was wrestling with the sheets, her hair unkempt and eyebrows bunched as her face contorted in pain.
"Geet! Geet, you're dreaming, wake up." He touched her shoulder gently, but when her kicks became volatile, he shook her awake with a force.
She opened her eyes to find his hands on her shoulders, his face etched with lines of worry.
"Are you okay?"
The flashes of her dream came rushing back to her.
At first, she was running. Running through a field, littered with flowers.
Soon, she began to hear footsteps behind her. Her pace picked up and a smile formed itself on her face.
But when she saw Dev stood in the middle of the field, her arms outstretched towards her, her smile dropped. She turned back to find no one there, no one was after her.
"Geet!" Dev called, and she forgot everything as she ran towards him.
The footsteps re-appeared again, and this time she halted her steps completely. Turning back, she saw Dev from afar, heading towards her.
"How did you do that?" she called out to him, half running and half talking to her husband, her face turned towards him.
Then she collided with someone, and two hands steadied her. Looking up, she saw Maan, who cocooned her into his embrace.
At first the embrace was warm, familiar, soothing. But then her body became cold, and she hesistated, and she tried to let go but he was persistent.
She screamed at him, she kicked him, but somehow he managed to hold on. He managed to hold on...
Geet saw red, and what occurred next was a blur.
But when she gave herself time to calm down, and for her haze to disappear, and for her conscious to fully comprehend what she had happened and what she had done- she found Maan on the floor, nursing a cut and heavily bleeding hand. The empty vase lay in shattered pieces across the floor.
Chapter 4 - Enchanting Silences
"Maan, I-"
He stood up, brushing the broken pieces from his clothes. Geet stepped forward but he raised a hand, stopping her in her tracks.
The silence of the night seemed overpowering, the slow lull of the clock deathly as she watched him walk out of her room, closing the door behind him.
Geet collapsed onto her bed. She grabbed Dev's untouched pillow and screamed her anguish into its softness, the muffled sound of her voice giving way for the racking sobs to leave her body.

The following morning brought a haze over the suburb. Winter sunlight threatened to break through the smoke, but the chill was evident and unforgiving.
A jacket was thrown over his shoulders, the tufts of hair cascading on his forehead. He pushed the glasses up the bridge of his nose, his palms resting on the chipped offish white paint of the balcony.
She appeared from behind him, placing a small cup of steaming chai to his left. Her hand squeezed his shoulder, but he didn't respond, so she sighed and left him to his thoughts.

"It's all a haze."
Her voice broke through the clouds of his thoughts. She had been sat on the couch for quite some time, he had remained defiantly behind the kitchen counter, leaning against it with his eyes closed. His left hand nursed a poorly wrapped bandage.
"Nothing makes sense."
Silence.
"So you're not going to say anything?"
"Any word that comes out my mouth is a bitter pill for you. The more I talk, the harder it is for you. I know you don't really want me around here, either. But we have to wait, for as long as we can."
"You know, Maan. You know everything. I know you know everything."
"You spend far too much time in that room of yours."
"Don't patronise me."
"Would he let you behave as irrationally as you are now?"
"He isn't here anymore!" Exasperated, she jumped off the couch and stormed into the kitchen, standing in front of him. He turned his head fractionally to the side, wanting to avoid her questioning eyes. "Dev has been missing for four entire weeks, and no one breathes a word about it."
He noticed her trembling hands, the knuckles white as she clenched them into a fist yet again. Smoking and clenching had become a habit since Dev's disappearance; as if her body had devised its own survival instinct to cope with the loss.
Geet stared at the rugged face before her, but he gave away nothing.
"f**k this."
She fished a cigarette from the pocket of her jean and brought it to her lips, but he pulled it away.
"I'm going away for a few days," he said, holding the cigarette in one hand as his fingers ran over its curve.
"Can I ask why?"
Silence.
"Close the door on your way out."

Neither of them had slept that night, so she had been awake when she heard the shuffling below.
She stepped out of her room, watching the way the early breaks of sunrise gave way through the panels of the windows, casting a beautiful earthy glow in the apartment.
Maan was rolling his jacket, his half full backpack beside him when she descended the stairs, a shawl wrapped around her frame.
She stopped at the foot of the stairs.
"When are you coming back?"
"3-4 days. It depends." He held out a packet of cigarettes to her. "Take it. I can pick up some more on the way."
She shook her head, and he didn't protest. Watching him walk towards the door, she felt the familiar sensation, her mind throbbing as she closed her eyes, trying to locate the oncoming flashback.
Don't leave me.
Her eyes flew open as she heard her own voice in the lost recesses of her mind. Before she could think about her preceeding actions, she leapt off the last step and grabbed his arm, pushing him against the door as she wound her arms around his neck and surrendered to present him with a soul searing kiss.
