'Khushi...Please wake up. Khushi!!!!' Arnav kept screaming but she lay imp in his arms.
After seeing Khushi in a pool of blood, a panic stricken Arnav had struggled to get her out of the pit without hurting her any further.
After getting her out, he had seen a cut on her forehead from where blood was oozing. A part of her slacks from knee downwards was also soaked in blood.
Arnav had tried his best to revive her senses, rubbing her hands and shaking her. But Khushi refused to open her eyes.
The terror that had gripped him from the time he found her missing only seemed to intensify.
A thousand images of the happy and smiling Khushi flashed in his head, each one making him feel like a tyrant for reducing her to this pitiful state.
Deciding not to lose more time, Arnav drove like a madman to fine the nearest hospital, all the while wishing for some God or some angel to keep her safe.
Finding a hospital in an unknown place caused further loss of time and Arnav's heart was beating faster every moment.
Finally, he had the fortune to find a good hospital within 45 minutes.
It was an hour after all formalities had been completed and Khushi was admitted to the first aid department.
Arnav had tried to battle with himself to call her family. They needed to know. But what if they were needlessly worried? But was it not the right thing to do? Yes it was.
He had carried Khushi's phone with him and he brought it out to find her father's number. Unfortunately the mobile was switched off and refused to come to life, thanks to lack of battery.
Frustrated, he ran his fingers through his hair, feeling distraught.
Just then the doctor came and Arnav immediately bombarded him with a barrage of questions.
'How is she?'
'Conscious'
'Is she hurt badly?'
'No. She will heal.'
'Has she lost a lot of blood?'
'Mmm. Kind of. But she will recover given proper food and tonics'.
'Can I take her home?'
'Yes. But you have to sign some forms first and make sure she is safe. Your wife needs all the tender loving care she can get,' the doctor said with a smile.
Arnav was about to correct his mistake, but he shrugged. How does it matter? He was not likely to see the doctor after leaving Simla.
When he entered the room Khushi was lying on her side, with a bandage on her forehead and perhaps knee too. But he could not see her knee as it was covered with a blanket
What could he say to her? How could he even think that a 'sorry' would heal all the pain and emotional torture she had undergone.
So he stood there mutely looking at her and willing her to look at him.
She knew he was here. She knew because she always felt his gaze on her. She was too enraged to look at him. Too hurt to even speak a word to him.
So, stubbornly she kept her eyes closed.
'
Khushi I know you are awake,' he said finally, gathering all the courage he could muster.
And I know 'sorry' is one of the most inadequate words one can ever say to make up for everything.
I don't want to justify my actions. I was a brute and always have been. But I have never hurt someone so much, if that helps. The mention of my mother sets off strange reactions in me and I cannot explain why. But I should not have taken it out on you.
You could have been killed or raped or more badly injured. And I can never forgive myself even though none of this happened, because it could have happened and I left you exposed to these dangers.
No Khushi I won't say sorry because it won't be enough. I won't take the coward's way out and beg for forgiveness. I will be a man and take on the consequences.
Sue me. Tell your Dad about me. And I know you will quit the job. Do whatever Khushi. Punish me. I deserve it.
But first, help me heal you. Let me do that at least. No I don't want you to melt after all the things I do for you. You can still sue me and punish me. But I first I want you to regain your strength,' he finished, saying everything his heart felt genuinely.
Khushi did not say a word. She did not know what to say after his long speech. He had already said all that she wanted to say, even about quitting. She hated what he had done to her, hated his arrogance and high handedness. But hating him hurt her more.
Why couldn't she hate him the way he deserved to be? Her weakness brought tears to her eyes, but she refused to let him see them.
The gentle sniffs he heard from her told him she was crying and he stood there at a loss to wipe away her tears, though he himself had put them there.
After what seemed like an eternity she stirred from the bed and sat up.
Instantly he was by her side, ready to help in case she needed anything.
His, eyes took in her disheveled state, her dirt smudged, tear streaked face and her eyes brimming with unshed tears. She still looked beautiful, came an unwelcome thought,
For the first time she allowed herself to take in his appearance. He looked haggard and extremely distraught. His face reflected the deep anguish he felt and his eyes mirrored the same. Sighing, she closed her eyes. Even now, the first thought that came to her head was that he looked tired and harrowed. Why couldn't she think of herself and not him? She had to be strong.
When they reached the cottage after her discharge, the next day, Khushi felt too weak to even walk.
The doctor had warned Arnav about this, 'Your wife has lost a lot of blood and she is also very tired. So you may want to watch out if she feels dizzy'.
Again Arnav had missed correcting her, too busy taking note of all her instructions. He had also taken the doctor's number for emergency.
Khushi consistently pushed away Arnav as he tried to help her walk. But when dizziness hit her and she was about to faint, he scooped her up in his arms and took her to her bedroom.
She felt too stunned, too shy and still angry, a whole world of emotions that prevented her from speaking.
He placed her on the bed tenderly and before Khushi could push him away again, he bent down and covered her with a blanket.
'I know you hate me Khushi and you can get your revenge. But first get back your strength. Let me get you some food and milk. You will need it to become stronger,' he said and left the room.
Khushi watched his retreating back. She hated this. She hated the fact that he was being nice and she could not stay angry.
What had made him react so violently when she had mentioned his mother? What was wrong or what was so unnerving about his mother? What weak nerve had she touched? She wanted to know, but she knew he would never tell her.
When he came back with a bowl of soup and bread, and a lot of fresh fruits, Khushi looked at the food disdainfully and then looked away.
She felt the bed dip beside her and hand reach out and tilt her chin.
'I said you can stay angry with me and punish me. But you need strength for that. And I know you don't want to eat the food I am giving, but then you are stuck with me till you get better.
And yes, if you hate this so much, please give me your father's number. I will confess my heinous deed to your Dad and he can punish me to his heart's content and he can also come down with your mother and take care of you.
I was trying to reach him, but your mobile was switched off and I could not call him. I will confess to my crimes like a man and he can punish me the way I deserve to be.
So, Khushi either you eat your food or let me call your father and tell him what happened, so that you can be taken care of by your parents and I can get the punishment I deserve.
Tell me what you want and I won't stop you.
The choice is yours. Let me take care of you or let them come.
Which of these is your choice?'
Arnav asked her looking into her eyes with sincerity.
Khushi looked into his honey gold eyes. His proud yet determined face. She also remembered his angry face as he had said 'Out!'.
She remembered the agony of being lost in a dark wilderness in an unkown land.
She felt the throbbing pain of her injuries.
And she came to a decision'.
