Part 112

NK felt his eyes sting with unshed tears and his hands tremble.

He set the letter aside on the bedside table, careful to weigh it down with a bowl of fruits. He then lowered Aarti to lie down in their bed, her head sinking into a soft pillow. He lay over her, his hard, big body covering hers. His fingers captured hers. He looked into her eyes.

"My darling Aarti'", he whispered, struggling to get the words out through a choked throat.

"I asked you to marry me many times. I knew that a part of you wanted to say 'Yes' even when you said 'No'.", he smiled at her.

"I am no prince of a man. No one can call me perfect. Or good husband material. I am just'. Ordinary. A man. Just a man''" He cupped her cheek.

"I want to live with YOU. Spend every day with you till we die. See the smile that you hide in your eyes when you are happy. Feel the warmth of your love till I die''" NK swallowed.

"I don't care about saris and hair and jewellery and all that stuff. I never have. You have always looked beautiful to me, even in the mechanic's overalls'."

Aarti smiled.

"I will stock the fridge with ice cream'..", NK promised.

Aarti shook her head, smiling her 'No'.

"Better still, I will take you out for ice cream frequently.", NK said.

Aarti nodded, still smiling.

"I have seen others fall in love. Classmates, friends'..Nannav & Khushi Bhabi'..", NK smiled thinking of them.

Aarti smiled.

"Akash & Payal Bhabi'"

Aarti nodded.

"Di & Anand Jiju'But I never thought that I would fall in love. Or any girl would fall in love with me..."

Aarti kissed his dimpled chin.

"I am no alpha male, no over achiever, no go getter'..I am just plain me. I..I don't know how to be someone else, Aarti'"

Aarti caressed his cheek.

"I like working with Nannav & Akash, Aarti. Because I love them. And because I am doing something for the family. Not because I enjoy making money." NK kissed her forehead.

"What is love?"

NK kissed her nose.

"I don't know. But it has something to do with wanting to see you all the time, be with you all the time, wanting only you and no one else, seeing only you and no one else in a crowd'..Being able to tell you whatever I feel, knowing that you will take the effort to understand'..Knowing that you will never hurt my feelings'..Knowing that you accept me the way I am''"

This update shows things that are lacking but needed or desired... DESIDERATUM.

Reading Aarti's letter NK felt touched by her emotions. He realized the extent of the insecurity feeling dwelling in her in the matter of human relationship. He realized how her formative years have played a major role to encapsulate herself with her own protective gear against the assault of emotions. He realized that she had to do it to protect herself as well as her mother from her father's wrath who would pound out even a chink in the armor if visible.

Whispering to Aarti he said, whenever he asked her to marry him and received a negative reply he knew she had wanted to say yes.

"Learning to have patience and not forcing the relationship is part of the twin soul process. If you are trying to force your will onto the other person, chances are you're not ready to really connect yourself. There should be no blame here - only deep and unconditional love "

Continuing his talk he said that he was not a prince, a perfect person or cut out to be a good husband. He was just an ordinary person who wants to live with her, spend his time with her till the end of their time on earth. He wanted to be the one to glimpse the smile that lighted her eyes and feel the warmth of her love.

That is what he cared about and not her clothes. For him she looked beautiful in whatever she wore. He promised to take her out to enjoy the simplest of things like eating ice-creams that she had been deprived of all along.

He says he has seen others falling in love, his friends and members of his family, Nannav and Khushi Bhabhi, Akash and Payal Bhabhi, Di and Anand Jiju. But he had never even thought or dreamt that he would fall in love or any girl would fall in love with him. He described himself to be an ordinary person, not someone the girls would drool over. He said he cannot pretend to be someone else. What you see is what you get.

He said he worked with Nannav and Akash because he loves them and feels that he is contributing to the family and not because he is enjoying making money.

NK' s take on love is wanting to see her, wanting to be with her all the time, wanting only her and no one else, seeing only her in a crowd, being able to communicate with her whenever and whatever he felt and knowing that she will definitely understand his feelings and knowing that she would accept him as he is.

With his lips on hers he told her that he wished she had told him about her surgery so that he could have been there as her support. He felt bad that she had to take in so much of uncertainities while she herself was under scalpel.He set things right in her mind that he would never have given up nor left her alone. They were bound together for better or for worse.

Hearing his promise and understanding the depth of his feelings, unknowingly a tear slowly traversed down her cheek. Aarti touched her cheek feeling wet and was stunned beyond belief that she possessed the emotion that makes her cry. Once the realization set in tears started pouring uncontrollably. All the pain, fear, helplessness, loneliness that she had bottled up in her 22 tender years came out in the form of racking sobs.

NK gathered her close and let her cry her heart out for all the bad things, that she had to bear and had lost hope of ever her life taking a good turn.

Even after understanding the past one cannot erase it. What we can do is we can change our perception of it. That.. is within our grasp.

Only when we do so we will be able to look at the ugly phase of the past stoically and with that realization comes the dawn in our life where the sunburst warms our life after the long cold night.

The assurance from NK of his love, expectations from life was needed by Aarti in order to over come the lingering memories of her black days. It was necessary for her to be shown how her life was not anchored to her bitter past but to the lively present and the bright future.

That is why this update that gave assurance that was lacking but needed or desired is termed DESIDERATUM
