Part 20 :
Next morning both woke up feeling fresh . Love had brought about a change in their looks. They were glowing from the inside and it was showing on the faces. A smile that broke without a reason , the aching need to be in the presence of the other a feeling that they can do anything to keep the other happy, a sweet pain and longing they felt when they were not together all these had become part of their lives now, in just a few days. Few weeks ago two people who were strangers were now not able to be apart.
Arjun came down hiding the bag behind his back, quickly put it behind the couch and joined arohi to have breakfast. While eating he started playing with her fingers and suddenly started teasing how small they were in front of his and how her ring finger was not even as wide as his little finger which she denied, so he measured the size of her ring finger using a string , she was right it was not that small, he cut the thread at the exact size and carefully put it on the side. 'ok, I was wrong it is not that small , but not wider than my ring finger' they continued arguing like that till they finished their breakfast, both of them deliberately delaying so they can keep sitting and talking like that.
As they started going down arjun told her to go ahead and wait near the car as forgot something and came back. As arohi went down, he came back into the house and took the bag and kept it on her bed inside, he smiled thinking how the evening would end, with them being engaged, he had one more thing to do and he will do it while coming back, arohi had told him that she will be home by herself so he will give her enough time to get ready, she will gorgeous anyways but still it would be a special evening so everything should be special. Royal blue for a royal moment he thought looking at his selection once more. He put the string that he had left on the breakfast bar earlier, in his pocket. He wanted to take her somewhere on saturday on his bike, he was going to convince her to stay another day so they can leave together on sunday.
As he came down the security guard, govind, stopped arjun and gave him a letter, 'sir I have to take leave for few days, someone else will replace me from this evening, when I come back I will take charge again' arjun took the letter from him the security company had issued a permission that said govind will be on leave and another guard will be in charge for few days. Arjun was fine with it. Govind saw them both get in the car and thought 'they look so good together, wish saab and memsaab live together like this' he did not know how much they were in love but still he somehow felt the connection just by seeing them and wished wholeheartedly that they stay together he liked arohi's gentle nature, even if it was just a few times he had seen her going up or down. Employees observe everything, they just keep quiet to keep their job.
As they went he told her 'when u come back u will find something special and I want you to be ready by the time I come back' 'what is it that is so special?' 'you will know' 'tell me please' 'what will I get if I tell you?' 'nothing' 'then no deal, wait till the evening' arohi faked anger, with him she was a changed person and that too just from a few days, she forgot she was a teacher or she ran a school, it was just arohi the girl in love. He chuckled at her but did not reveal what the surprise was, 'and you have to be ready like a princess' he said, 'ooohh what is the occasion' 'do we need an occasion to celebrate, just like that' 'I think I know u a little by now , there is something going on right?' 'let us see how much u know me , what is my fav colour?' 'blue' 'fav dish?' 'kadi' 'wrong' 'what? that is what u told me' 'that was just to impress u , now that I succeeded I can tell the truth , I hate it, see u don't know me so well' arohi was really angry but just for few seconds then she could not help but laugh 'so what else did you say that u like but actually hate so that u cld impress me' 'when it concerns you there is nothing I can hate, if you want I can change all the things I hate into my likes, not just to please you but to be a part of you' he said sincerely, and squeezed her hand. She was overwhelmed. 'okay next question '' he had not yet finished and they had arrived at the workshop 'will continue in the evening ur highness' he said and added 'are you sure u will be okay with ur friend, call my no. if u get stuck anywhere' he said she nodded and as she was about to get down he stopped her 'give your friend's number as well' 'okay but why' 'just to be on safe side, he said' 'her name is leela' he then entered the name and number in his cell. She left looking back at his car twice while walking and his eyes never left her sight until she went inside the building.
She was so happy and cheerful, that her newly acquired friend, Leela, had to ask if there was any special news 'are u getting married or engaged' she asked 'what ? how did you ... I mean why do u ask' arohi said 'I can tell from the glow on your face' leela replied. Arohi couldnot help but blush is it so obvious and then the word engaged hit her, and then she remembered arjun's sudden interest in the size of her ring finger. All the blood rushed to her face. Nervousness, happiness and a sweet pain all occurred at the same time. She could hardly concentrate, it all fits, he said it is a special evening and also he did look very determined when he said promise last night, she could not stop smiling, she was lucky, surely her parents in heaven have blessed her and they must be watching it all, if only they lived to see her being so happy, she wanted to have guddi beside her to hug her and make her part of everything in her life. She just wanted to be out of the workshop and reach home and see what else was waiting for her that he had planned.
The workshop that helped her learn things that will help her school children ended, she thanked the staff and invited them to her school. Then she and leela went out chitchatting. Leela had a daughter , a special kid, she wanted to buy some activity kits. Arohi too place a bulk order at that shop to be shipped directly to her school, she was glad she came there. Her friend bought two each of everything, arohi asked if she was buying for someone else too , she replied that her brother had a learning disability and he too needed these things, her daughter and he would do them together. Then she had tears in her eyes, she was a middle aged woman who looked like had gone through lot of hurdles in life and still she managed to smile and keep up with life so she can take of them. As they talked more about special kids , many things came up in their discussion . Leela was worried mainly for her daughter as she was growing up and even though mentally she is a kid physically she is like any other girl , the natural process and changes in a woman's body undergoes wont stop from happening. Arohi agreed, guddi had gone through all that and it was a big challenge for arohi to make her understand about things or put her into a habit of taking care of that basic stuff. The woman worried how she will safeguard her daughter all life, if something goes wrong how will she face it. What if she died before her and then who will look after , there were options medically available but it was far fetched and it all made the woman scared. There had been cases where mentally challenged girls were subjected to assault and the consequences were hard to imagine. Arohi was able to understand her pain and was sympathetic, this was something that she herself was worried about. Arohi in between called arjun once to let him know where she was and that it will take an hour or so to reach home. Even for arjun it was going to take more than 2 hrs to reach home, talking to arjun even for a few minutes made arohi feel better. Leela and Arohi started back home and after dropping arohi at the gate of the house she left.
As Arohi entered the building she remembered the surprise arjun had planned, only she had now guessed part of it and could not wait to know the rest of it. Govind the guard was still in his seat. As he saw arohi come in he got up to greet her. She was about to approach the stairs, just then two women climbed down the stairs talking 'simran you are here for another month know, I will take you to that place also' One was Payal Mittal and another a stranger. As arohi took few steps back so they can walk around , payal stopped and glared at her. 'arohi right?' she asked. 'yes, hello' she said to both of them and thought she had seen the other lady somewhere, even that lady was looking at arohi with the same look. As arohi sarted to go up payal mittal stopped her. 'wait a minute, I want to talk to you' arohi had to stop. Govind was at a ear shot. 'is raashi home? I don't see her' she asked arohi. 'no she went to her inlaws' 'when?' 'couple of days ago' she was not sure why payal was asking, may be she had some work with raashi. 'so it is just you and arjun, what are you doing when raashi is not here?' 'excuse me' said arohi not believing what she heard, mrs. Mittal was being directly rude , just then as if a thunder bolt had stuck the other lady spoke up 'I know where I have seen you' her voice was loud and scratchy arohi too remembered just that moment where she had heard it before , oh lord no not them 'do you know her simran?' payal asked the lady oh yeah simran mishra, the mishra's 'I know her and her family very well payal didi' then she turned to arohi and very rudely said 'tum uss pagal ki behen ho na', this was a shocker for arohi it had been very long since someone spoke so insensitively about guddi and she could not take it 'what r u saying' she said controlling her tears 'haan u r the same girl' 'how do you know them simran?' payal mittal asked her cousin, 'arey didi , u remember 3 years back we had gone for my son's rishta and her parents had hidden from us that their other daughter is mentally not allright and they wanted this girl to be our bahu'** . Arohi's tears had now flown down her cheeks, her legs wouldnot move even though she wanted to run upstairs, Her parents did a small mistake of hiding and then they did let them know but their reaction was outrageous. they questioned them a lot and she rejected the proposal, how does that give her any right to talk about them like this, it was just a small interaction, they hardly knows about her family . 'really?' payal questioned 'yeah and then see the arrogance of this girl, when we simply questioned the history she calls us directly to tell she is not interested, as if we were, who wants to get such arrogant girl as bahu, they bring bad luck' 'oh so this is the story behind you' payal mittal continued ' you couldnot find anybody to catch hold of, so you are trapping a nice guy like arjun, his family is so nice, they have no clue that you must be casting your spell on him, and that too alone when raashi is not there, what else are you doing to make him dance to your tunes, you spoilt the perfect alliance for natasha, I will see how you will be happy' arohi felt like slapping them hard but if she could not get the strength out to hit them she was drained 'chalo didi let us inform rudra bhai saab what she is upto, let us save them from these sisters' arohi could not take the word again 'shut up' she shouted at the lady 'yes I rejected ur family because you did not deserve the respect from us for what all you asked and what do you know about me or my sister '' the lady responded in a louder harsher tone 'no need for me to know anything, all I know is my son was lucky to escape, now he is married he has a family, god knows what would have happened if he married you' and then what she said after that shook arohi to the core. Even after the two ladies left she stood there dumbstruck because she could not deny what the lady said in the end. It just added to the pain that had started after talking to leela.
Govind was a mute spectator, he came forward seeing arohi's tear filled eyes. But she just went upstairs pulling together all her strength. They had hit on her family, her character and her future. As she finally came inside she threw down her bag on the bed and collapsed on it , she was so shocked at the rudeness and the manner the strangers had talked about her and she felt like they were still standing down and cursing her. just then her eyes fell on the bag on the bed. She opened it slightly and saw a blue suit , she took it out and a smile automatically formed when her eyes were still sad and tears fell. She let the hand slide over the smooth texture, like she caressed arjun's heart itself. It was beautiful, she forgot what had happened moments earlier and admired his choice. She stood up and kept it on her to see in the mirror it looked beautiful, she folded it back went to wash her face. When she came out she was back to the earlier moment when the ladies hurt her and she remembered arjun's special evening, her friend's marriage comment, the ring finger, the dress and the promise that everything will remain same even after they leave mumbai, will it be, she sat down on the bed again , her phone started to ring , it was arjun and it was 5 pm, she did not take the call.
Something snapped in her and quickly she started packing her things. She cannot marry Arjun, if he comes now and sees her like this he will question her and wont stop until she told the truth, she had seen how he had warned payal mittal in the party over a small thing, and he will coax her into agreeing, she should not be here when he comes she cannot give him anymore hope. It will break his heart but it is better now than any harsh consequences later. Sometimes major decisions are taken in split second that is what arohi did. She called sanchit's number , asked him to be in the bus stand abt 5 hrs after now and wait for her whatever time it is, she did not reply to any of his questions. She put the dress back in the bag and left it on the bed. She took the letter pad and a pen and wrote few lines, kept it under the bag and leaving the keys on the table , she came out took one look at the beautiful house, where she had experienced the most beautiful moments of her life I am sorry arjun she whispered taking his picture in her hands, a tear dropped on the glass and flowed down the split of the frame. Leaving a piece of herself behind she locked the knob closed the door behind her and with her bags went down, the sketch she made of arjun the heart all of them that she had tucked in the wardrobe were still safely lying there.
She came downstairs, Govind was still in the same disgusted mood at the ladies and seeing arohi come down he got up to enquire how she was 'madam please don't feel bad they are like that only very nasty people' he said 'govind can I ask you a favour?' 'ji' 'please don't tell arjun or raashi any of this' 'but madam it is not your fault' 'can I ask another favour, I need to go to the bus stand right now' 'madam this time?, I mean it is far' 'I have to go back somehow, can I get a taxi that can take me out of Bombay to the next nearby town' he checked the phone nos and called his friend who ran a taxi, 'he will take you madam till wherever you want to go' 'thank you I will never forget your help' she said 'madam I have never seen a woman so gentle and good as you after the singhania's left, I wish you all happiness' he said in next half hour the friend came, meanwhile arjun had called twice from the office , she still did not pick up the phone, she did not have the courage to even say hello. Even the guard who had to replace govind had come and he too left.
Once on the road arohi finally took deep breaths and said thanks to the driver for helping her. he was a nice person and he was ready to take her to her home, but she just wanted to get out of Bombay and reach some other place from where she can catch a bus , it was already abt 6 and by the time she reached her place it could be midnight, she was not worried of that. She was worried of calling arjun.
But she has to call, she has to tell him he will be going back to a empty house, so he is not utterly disappointed, she hated herself for this but she has to leave, he must be already worried. She called him. He took it at first ring 'arohi, what happened, I was calling you, did you reach home, or are you still outside' he asked all at once, as he came out of the jewellery store, he had just picked out the best rings in the store, two of them, one for her , one for him, they will wear it forever. He got into the car talking to her. 'arjun' she said with a shaky voice 'arohi, is everything okay' 'yeah yeah I am fine, arjun , I am going home' she said finally gathering all courage. 'okay, I will be there too in abt half hour' so she has not yet seen it so should he wait somewhere for somemore time, he wanted to go and see her all ready he wont be able to wait till she gets ready after seeing her, he wanted it all to be perfect.
'no arjun , I am going back, to my house, I am leaving mumbai' she said still with a shaky voice, it took few seconds for him to understand what she said 'what ? wait , going back , leaving mumbai, arohi you are scaring me, what happened is everyone okay? Did you get any call which street are you in now' 'arjun I am out of mumbai, nobody called, it is my decision to leave' 'you had been home already?' 'yes' 'and?' 'arjun I don't know how to say this I did not want to stay back' 'is this a joke? Because I have really started to freak out now, you are getting back at me for not revealing anything in the morning right? Omg you almost got me' he tried to laugh 'no arjun, listen to me please, I called because I don't want to you go with expectation and find the house empty' ''..' 'arjun?' 'yes' 'I am sorry' 'I don't understand, why?' 'I will call you tomorrow , don't worry about me , I am safe . arjun please don't be mad I can explain, I will tell when I feel like sharing, bye' she cut the call not waiting for his response.
Arjun was driving fast still holding the phone , even though she was not on line. As he reached their house he slammed the brakes and not noticing the change of guards he went up taking 3 stairs at a time. He opened the door and noticed only one lock was put the dead bolt was open, that meant she locked it from inside before closing because he remembered locking both. He took strides into her room to confirm his worst fears . there was still hope that it was all a joke and she was standing there waiting for him to surprise him. There he found , his gift still lying on the bed, intact , welcoming him. He felt a surge of disappointment, pain and anger creep up him along with a slight hope that she was still on her way back and may come in anytime.
__________ ** the lady and the alliance were already mentioned in part 5 of the ff, when bua told daadi about arohi, this was the main purpose of introducing that point and also the lady's voice in payal's house when arohi was running up after arjun's confession.
