Seeing
Smrita had pointedly told her the next morning, not the day the girls stayed over and hung out but the following morning, when Viveka was getting ready for work
Mama and Mami left the evening after Holi citing “We had to first fly to Dubai we were able to find a ticket”
Inder was missing too
Naina probably knew? Or did not?
Akash called her around Noon when the twins were taking a walk on Aurangazeb Rd with Viveka
“Naina hai beta?”
“nahi papa so rahi hai”
“Raat ko soye nahi aap log?”
“Hum log so gaye around 4 AM”
“Naina ne dekhi movie?”
“How do you know?” Viveka chuckled
“Diyu ka text aaya Raanav ne murder scene compilation dikhaya”
Viveka nodded laughing
“naina did not watch it with us”
Akash grunted sadly
Viveka increased her pace
“That does not automatically mean she was with Inder Papahh”
“Aur kaha ho sakti hai? Tumhare ghar mein chhupkar baithi thi kya?”
“There are so many rooms and a large room with books and paintings and magazines”
“Who Viveka nahi hai”
“I know she needs people but we have to think appropriately”
“I am beta I don’t want your family to think that’s why we left you behind”
“I doubt anyone cares”
“Kal itna tamasha ho gaya” Akash blurted
And then proceeded to finally reveal what happened with Nupur Dhamija
“Its OK Papa that’s all she knows don’t take to heart, we don’t live in the 19th century” “She cannot tell Naina who she can be with”
“Galat hai na beta?”
“I agree I am sorry she hurt Ma”
“raanav ne kuch kaha?”
“I don’t think he even knows what Mamiji said”
“Oh pleez! Of course he did
After his chat with Naina he brought her back to their suite, grabbed some extra bedding from a closet and went off to sleep upstairs
Around 11 when he was up he heard Smrita mumbling in the hallway with Nupur
He waited for Mamiji to leave and confronted his mother
“What happened to make her cry”
“Apni MIL se baat ki?”
“If that’s sarcasm then I hate it”
“She left all her daughters here”
“Can we not talk like that” he cringed
“I cannot change their gender if that’s what you want me to do”
“You sound so angry”
“My brother’s wife is upset and they areleaving tonight for Dubai”
“They were gonna leave tomorrow at Noon were they not?”
“Whose side are you on Raanu?”
“Gawddd!!” he yawned and rubbed his eyes
“I need coffee and need to go see my wife”
“she took them to a café for brunch”
“Did Naina go too?” he asked casually
“Aur TUM raat ko kitchen mein Naina ke saath kya kar rahe the?” Smrita smiled derisively
“NOTHING, just sorting things out”
“What happened between YOU TWO?”
“walk with me Ma I am going to get coffee, I have to be at Dad’s Doc appointment at 1 I might take the Metro”
“Dad made us apologize to Mrs Mathur”
Oh?” he went down the stairs quietly
“Its like you are suddenly a different person Raanav”
“I am NOT Mum”
“Are you OK with the Mathurs?”
“About what?”
“You married a Mathur”
“I want to be with Vi”
“Everything is upside down in the house, Dad’s accident, her NGO smaj seva, Lekha’s car getting wrecked, those sisters staying over, the apology”
“Nothing has to do with Viveka”
“Oh pleez, she rammed into Lekha’s car”
“To avoid that stupid mutt”
“Stupid?”
“Mum I love Lekha… I love you a LOT I am unable to be angry and petty” he said turning on the coffee maker as the help asked politely if he should
“No thanks its OK”
She has changed you in a month” Smrita growled
“The only way I can ban her sisters from this house is if we breakup” he said sipping his coffee and feeling better about the day
Smrita stared at him blankly
I am the same person Mom”
“Umm.. no… u are”
“If forgetting or disregarding some things that were important to me at some point… yeah… (he sipped.. ) yeah umm yeah I guess I am doing that” “This is a different feeling” he sighed “I am seeing myself differently”
“WHYYY?”
“I want to be with Viveka, she wouldn’t give me time of the day. Have you seen the people she hangs with?”
“I am on the board of 5 NGOs”
That’s not what I meant… I don’t even know how to explain it” “If I told her her sisters couldn’t sleep over she would not bat an eye lid” “She is not a typical wife Ma”
he said grimly “And THAT… would hurt me (he realized Viveka’s indifference would put him in his place soundly)” he said softly… (Smrita looked at him confused)“I am running on serious lack of sleep. I need to go find my wife”
“Kyon?”
“Really?” he laughed raised his mug in a sarcastic toast
Walking away back into the house through the large glass doors
“Be well mother… I will call you after Dad’s appointment”
“I will be there too”
He didn’t hear it
“This is not you raanav, this is someone else. I don’t know this child. You are playing the role of someone that desperately wants to be appealing and attractive to some nerdy middle class NGO worker. This is not a classy London educated lawyer… why would you do this to yourself? “I see nothing in her” Smrita muttered watching him go
