Don't know if the story is true or not but I've often seen this happen that parents in their old age are either treated with disrespect and left to work as nannys at their home or sent away to the old aged home. A lady in my neighborhood is very religious and preaches everyone. She stays alone in her house as her kids live abroad and in Goa where her husband also lived (he died few months back) but she preferred staying alone rather than keep her mother with her. She and her sister paid 4000 to the old aged home. She now is herself treated as a nanny of her grandkids. The saying is true "As you sow, so shall you reap".

And where this is one reality, I've also seen parents doing the same to their kids. Some disown their daughters after they get married and give everything to their son. Then the kids are left to break down the house and fight for their share.

I don't vouch for old aged homes but instead of leading a miserable life with your kids, it's a better option to stay there or alone. I have neighbors who were above 90 and stayed alone as their children disowned them. Such children meet their fate when the time comes. I can't get how can children treat their parents this way after all what their parents did for them but one thing which most parents make a mistake with is that during their lifetime, they put the house on their son's name. They should never do that.

Lots of judging happening on this thread.

I think it's wrong to judge the rules of any relationship.

Open marriage for example, is not my thing. But if two consenting adults are engaging in it, then why should I make a fuss and lose my sleep over it.

Similarly I have come across a good number of middle aged people who are quite enthusiastic and positive about spending their old age in old homes; most of them have only one child and they want their issues to prioritize their career even if it is in a foreign land, away from their parents.

In general, parents tend to be very very selfless and usually expect nothing in return from their children apart from probably a bit of love and care. They tend to be content with very little. I personally think that's how it should be. A parent's love for one's child is probably the singlemost sacrosanct thimg in the world. If all parents started becoming selfish, this world would have been doomed.

Yes, there are children who treat their old parents very poorly but that's rare from what I have seen. Most children, whether they live with or away from their parents tend to feel a good amount of love, respect and duty towards their parents.

Parents should be given the opportunity to choose between staying with their children or staying in a place where they get to mingle with like minded people.. They should not be forced either way.. Keeping them forcibly in their childrens' home in the name of duty can also result in mental agony for parents in some cases..

The narrative spread with this picture might be true but it was sad to watch the grandma giving explanations about why she is living in ashram.. Even if she was forced to talk on camera by her son still am sure she would be upset to know that her family name is being tarnished. I feel that family didn't deserve to be outed like this.. Just as Anushka and Virat should not have released the video of that litterbug without blurring his face..

There is a difference between the parents "wanting to stay" at old age home and "forcing parents to stay at old age home" 😵 even while the same children continue to occupy and appropriate house built by their parents 🤢.

Maybe the children should move to some young age home 😉

They should not let anybody take over their assets and money no matter how much they love them. They should help their children know and avail loans for their financial needs. Oldage homes and housing societies for senior citizens should not be discouraged. The better the facilities and rules for such places ,better security and stability will be available to the senior citizens. Also not everyone abandons their parents, most have relocate from time to time to other cities where their parents can't go with them or do not want to go with them. Sometimes their security is not adequate in these localities.Plenty of cases where senior citizens were targeted by criminals because they lived alone and were easy targets. With time we need to adopt practical solutions. We can still keep condemning irresponsible children but the priority should be to come up with better solutions for the parents.

You said it all ..

In India ,there is almost an unhealthy equation between parent-children .. It affects both ends of the equation .. Children never learn to be independent & feel entitled to mooch off of their parents till the end of their parent's time on this earth and parents continue to interfere in every aspect of their children's life with unreasonable expectations ( starting from academic expectations to arranging marriages for their children )..

I wouldn't mind if it changes for better ..
