Kyunki reality isn't glamourous...

TV shows these days are losing the original essence of the profession portrayed in a bid to put a glamour angle.
TV shows these days are losing the original essence of the profession portrayed in a bid to put a glamour angle
What did Fauji have then and Left Right Left doesn't have now, or what Lifeline had but Dill Mill Gaye lacks. Or for that matter what Udaan portrayed which FIR couldn't ?
The new shows might be treading the path of old hit shows, but have failed to present the ground realities. Does glamourisation of these shows has anything to do with the missing seriousness of the professions portrayed in the current crop? KT finds out...

According to actor Kavita Kaushik, who plays a female cop in FIR, glamourisation is important to make the show entertaining.

"At times the reality is sidelined to cater to larger audiences. A show, which is very strong on reality-based content, is only meant for niche audiences. Many things shown in a profession are real in the show wherein I play a cop, but it is shown in a humourous way. There has to be a bit mischief and fun, otherwise the show tends to get very heavy," says Kavita.

However, Kavita confirms she would readily accept the role that is the replica of Abhimanyu Rai's character in Fauji, which Shah Rukh Khan played.

Agrees actor Sangeeta Ghosh when she says, "Today the shows are more dramatised , but that's only because the audiences are loving it that ways. If the TV shows are showing certain professions, the channels can't take it lightly because it is the question of TRP as well. However, they try to make it look as pleasing and entertaining for the audiences," avers Sangeeta

If actor Ram Kapoor has to be believed , it's the fictional liberty that television industry is enjoying these days. "And that can't be questioned," says Ram and adds, "I don't think that the seriousness of a profession is ruined just because the glamour angle is involved with it.The audience these days are not fools. Channels know that the audience, nowadays , is very sharp, so they can't veer from the fundamentals, if they air a show highlighting a certain profession."

Priya Mishra, programming head of the show Left Right Left can't agree more when she says, "We try to maintain the gravity of a profession , but a certain level of liberty has to be taken to make the show more interesting for the viewers to watch.
I think the professions shown in serials nowadays tend to look very glamourous because of the simple reason that our technical production process has improved a lot.
So it is the qualitative difference, which makes things look vibrant and glamourous." However, not everyone feels that entertainment is the priority when it comes to highlighting a profession.
Take for instance director Ravi Rai, who feels that the quality in terms of content in television is worsening day by day because people in this industry are not ready to experiment. "People say that audience love the shows if there is a glam quotient involved in it, but I think they don't have too many options left with them .
There is some kind of fear in the television industry, and that is why the producers of these shows feel apprehensive of trying something simple and different. That is the reason they not able to come out of the glamourous mode. The quality of serials like Lifeline , Fauji or for that matter Sea Hawks was very high in terms of content ," asserts Ravi.

TV stars on the silken thread of love

As Raksha Bandhan is celebrated today, we ask some telly stars about their plans and their memories of the festival.

Aparna Tilak

"My brother is in Dubai since two years. But this time fortunately some of my relatives came from there and I sent him a Rakhi and his favourite mithai back with them. So he will receive it on Rakhi. It is true that distances hardly make a difference. However I am going to miss him, that is for sure."

"My most memorable Rakhi was when my brother got a job. He took me out shopping. Otherwise every year he had to buy something with mum's money. I really felt proud of him."

Is Gaurav Chopraa quitting the small screen?

With two Bollywood films and a Hollywood flick in his kitty, Gaurav has no time for television

NICOLE DASTUR

Was Bollywood your ultimate destination?
Well, films are an obvious step up for any actor, and I want to say a big 'thank you' to those who helped me get here, but no, films weren't a deliberate move. I hadn't planned it. I think my small role in the Leonardo DiCaprio movie Blood Diamond was the real turning point in my career.
But your role in Blood Diamond — your Hollywood debut — was a blinkand-you-miss it appearance…
I'll be honest. I was quite disappointed with the final outcome, because my role was edited and chopped a lot. But it was a big banner film, with big actors, and so, despite the small role, I got noticed. Blood Diamond has been instrumental in me getting offers from Bollywood.
So you already have two Bollywood films up your sleeve?
Yes, in one (Humne Jeena Seekh Liya), which releases in October, I just have a guest appearance. But it's a serious role, a strong character. I'm playing a social activist who is disillusioned, but has not lost faith. The character has an aura of heroism to it. On the other hand, I'm doing an outand-out commercial film with Boney Kapoor, where I'm playing a glam, sexy bad boy, like John Abraham in Dhoom. That's set for a 2008 release. And I'm also in talks with the director of Humne Jeena Seekh Liya for another film too. So I have a mix of commercial and meaningful cinema.
Hollywood has also beckoned again…
Yes, I've also signed another Hollywood film, and this time, I'm playing the protagonist, not just a cameo. After all, I have to prove that Blood Diamond wasn't a fluke! It's a martial arts film that's set in India, so I'm also learning martial arts now.
So will we see you quit the smallscreen now?
See, I don't plan anything, I take things as they come. If my film career takes off well, I just might quit TV. But I'd like to be known as an actor per se, the medium does not really matter.
You were recently accused of throwing tantrums on the sets of Jigar Ma Badi Aag Hai
The shooting of the serial started after I backed out of the show, so where was the question of me throwing tantrums on the sets? Secondly, I was accused of having problems with Neena Gupta's lines. Why would someone in my position have a problem with a senior female actress's lines? She has no direct connection with my place in the serial! Thirdly, it was said that I interfered too much. But shouldn't an actor cease merely being a puppet and be part of the creative process too? And to set the record straight, I left the show because I was genuinely tight for time. I'm doing so much these days, really, where is the time?

MEDIUM NO BAR: Gaurav Chopraa

Shveta Salve's all hype!
29 Aug 2007, 0609 hrs IST,TNN

Apparently Shveta believes in enjoying life to the fullest.

Well she did make her presence felt during Jhalak Dikhla Jaa , but Shveta Salve failed to cash in on the popularity she got. Shveta was seen doing the sexy teacher act a la Sushmita Sen in Main Hoon Na in her serial Left Right Left , but she didn't create any waves with her performance.
In fact Shveta cannot be spotted on the small screen these days, the best place to see her is on page 3, as she and boyfriend Rodney Barnes seem to have become a regulars on the party circuit. Looks like Shveta is going to give Kishin Mulchandani some serious competition soon!

Gaurav's Talkathon
18 Aug 2007, 2200 hrs IST,TNN

When Gaurav Chopraa starts talking there is no stopping him. Those close to him, at home or at work, naturally are the casualties! Of course, he's a sweet and caring guy, they would all agree. But, he will just not stop dissecting a topic once he's at it.

Wonder how girlfriend Narayani Shastri takes it? Or does she just switch off at times. Is that why Narayani looks a little spaced out at times at events?

Nikkhil in Left Right Left?
30 Aug 2007, 0352 hrs IST
,TNN
Twist in the tale.

A little birdie tells us that Nikkhil Arya was being considered for Left Right Left after Rajeev Khandelwal's exit. There was a very interesting role he was supposed to do. However, suddenly plans changed because the serial makers felt they should give a boost to the female characters in the show. Is it about women power? We guess.

Priyanka Bassi busy going 'Left Right Left' with Vikas as Rajeev is not around.

Rajeev with Priyanka Bassi

It's barely been a few weeks that Rajeev quit 'Left Right Left' and his so called love Priyanka is busy getting coochie-coo with Vikas Manaktala.

After his shaky relationship with Aamna, Rajeev was seen getting close to Priyanka, who really didn't pay much heed to him as the girl's eyes were set on the broody Vikas.

In fact, Priyanka and Vikas share the same Vanity Van with connecting doors and apparently spend a lot of time together. When we asked Vikas about their relationship, he diplomatically replied, "Priyanka is a co-star and a very sweet friend, that's all."

While Priyanka and Vikas have been keeping their relationship under wraps it's known to all on the sets that they are dating. May be its time for Rajeev to get back to his 'Kashish' Aamna.

Not sorry for the break
A. L. Chougule

Three years ago, when Rajeev Khandelwal quit Kaahin Toh Hoga at the peak of his popularity, people were shocked. Today actors opting out of successful shows is a routine occurence. Screen finds out what prompts the move...
bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. But this age-old saying does not hold true for today's television actors.Take the case of Iqbal Khan. A failed film actor, it was Ekta Kapoor who gave a new lease to his career on television. After doing three Balaji shows - Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai, Kavyanjali and Karam Apna Apna - the overworked and popular actor quit playing the main lead in the fourth show Karam seven months ago for his marriage and honeymoon. He is yet return to television...

Ever since dailies have taken over prime time, the turnout of actors has been very high. Several actors have quit shows at the peak of their popularity. These include Rajeev Khandelwal, Kiran Karmar4kar, Smriti Irani, Shweta Kwatra, Manish Goyal, Tina Parekh, Mohnish Behl, Manoj Bohra, Cezanne Khan and Anuj Saxena, to name just a few. Five years ago, most actors would not have even thought of walking out of a successful show even if they were not too satisfied with their role. Today, quitting a popular show or taking a break from TV is becoming a fad rather than an isolated case. What makes actors leave shows without an alternative in hand?

"There are various reasons, both personal and professional," says producer Sunjoy Wadhwa of Saath Phere. "As daily soaps undergo various changes, actors feel dissatisfied with the way their characters shape up. Some times they have a tempting offer elsewhere and therefore do not mind jumping the sets." STAR India's ex-senior creative director Shailja Kejriwal who has joined NDTV's new entertainment channel to be launched later this year says by and large breaks and replacements have become a routine affair because of an actor's inability to cope up with the pressure of working in dailies. "Sometimes it's creative dissatisfaction that leads to their exit. After all, it's not easy to work in dailies for a very long time with the same level of involvement," she feels.

Kaahin Toh Hoga was Rajeev Khandelwal's debut show. What surprised most people was that Rajeev who became hugely popular as Sujal quit the serial just a year after it started and remained almost out of limelight over the next two years. "I have always wanted to do quality work. Kaahin Toh Hoga was a love story and I opted out because after one year the love story was over and it became a regular saas-bahu drama," reasons Rajeev who's just quit another show Left Right Left which he had been doing for a year. "It may not have been a very popular show but it's a widely talked-about series. However, I felt that the story was not moving ahead and my character was stagnant which is why I quit," he confesses.

As Om of Kahaanii Ghar Ghar Kii, Kiran Karmarkar was hugely popular. But after five years he left and stayed away from TV for a year. "I needed a break to get away from the monotony of doing one role. More than a break I needed a change," says Kiran. Once he quit Kahaani... the sluice gates opened and he was offered several roles. "I was offered leads in practically every serial, both on-air and new - Yeh Meri Life Hai, Jassi..., CID and Kohinoor. Ekta had also offered me two shows. But I was not ready for any serial," he reveals. "I wanted to stay away from television and was also looking for some new challenging roles." While he is currently doing the weekly Thodi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasmaan he had opted out of Saathi Re mid-way because he didn't find anything interesting in the character.

Manish Goyal, post-Nach Baliye, walked out of Bhabhi that had made him popular as Tilak. He didn't want to play a grandfather after the generation leap. He also quit Betiyaan after a few weeks' work. Says Manish, "I do one project at a time and give it my 100 per cent. But I didn't get what I was promised in Betiyaan. At this stage of my career I am looking for something challenging. I was offered Durgesh Nandini but I refused because I was being denied my space and freedom to do something else for 90 days which was not acceptable to me."

Other actors who have walked out of popular soaps due to generation leap include Manoj Bohra (Kasauti Zindagi Kay) and Arjun Punj (Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki).

Manoj played Prerna's son Prem in Kasauti... for almost one year. The second 20-year generation jump would have required Manoj to play a 50-plus character and he decided to bid adieu. "The generation leap was an unfortunate development because I really loved the character. I felt sad because I was quite attached to the character and gave so much to the show which helped bring in new audience," he says regretfully. Like Manoj, Cezanne who played Prem's father and Prerna's ex-lover also quit Kasauti... for the same reason.

Monotony got Shweta Kwatra, Pallavi of Kahaani ,to opt out when the character was extremely popular, "I needed a change and chose not to do a daily for almost two years, hoping that the scene would change. But it didn't. Last year I wanted to do a daily but I signed for Nach Baliye which kept me busy for six months," admits Shweta who's entered Kumkum six months ago. Tina Parekh recently quit Kahani... after a three-year stint as Parvati's daughter Shruti. "The character had a beautiful journey and whatever I am today it's because of Kahaani... But I had to move in life. Shruti was an extremely important and popular character but I am done with the role," she explains. Denying that she was bored playing the character or that it was getting monotonous, Tina says it was her desire to experiment with new roles that prompted her to quit.

Among all the exits and walkouts, Smriti Irani's departure from Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi two months ago made the biggest headlines. Whether she quit the show after seven years because of a showdown with Ekta or lack of time owing to her own shows Thodisi Si Zameen Thoda Sa Aasman and Virrudh is anybody's guess.

Shweta, Tina, Rajeev, Kiran and Manish risk opting out of popular shows but imagine a newcomer like Poonam Joshi quitting Balaji's Kaahin Toh Hoga? "After two-and-a-half years I wanted a change. There was no challenge left in the role and though I took a risk I didn't remain jobless even for a month. I did Tumhari Disha and now I am doing Woh Rehne Wali Mehlon Ki," says Poonam. Gurdeep Kohli, on the other hand, took a break from Sindoor because of marriage and didn't return to the show because of professional and personal differences with producer Kinnari Mehta.

It's not just actors who opt out of shows, channels and producers also send them on a long holiday or simply show them the door. After the first generation leap Achint Kaur who replaced Shweta as Pallavi in Kahaani... was out of the show but her character is now back in the story. Achint is also out of Kyunki... Mita Vasisht who plays Trishna in Kahaani... has been sent to jail and is currently out of the show. Mita has no clue when Trishna will be brought back. Kavita Kapoor who played Meera in Yess Boss for nearly five years has recently been replaced by Sonia Kapoor. Nigaar Khan who played Barnali in Kasamh Se.. was sent to jail and a year later she is still serving the prison term. In fact, over the past few years several characters have come in and gone out of dailies. Says Achint, "Entries and exits are fairly common occurrences. There is nothing unusual about it."

One reason why breaks have become a routine is that replacements don't make any difference to dailies' popularities. "The audience has matured. They connect more with the story and characters than actors," feels Shailja. Another reason is the opportunities and money. Today actors are hardly an insecure lot. "It is a huge industry and there is enough work around," says Gurdeep.

Sunjoy feels that the money factor is definitely one of the major reasons behind actors quitting shows mid-way. "Five years ago actors would have thought five times before leaving a show. Today because of their increased financial comfort they can afford to walk out,"he says. Agrees Rajiv Paul who quit Karam along with wife Delnaz, "Three years ago I would not have done it. But today I am in a position to pick and choose because money is not a problem with me anymore."
