THE ace choreographer is one of the three female judges of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 3 this year. Merchant talks to Indya.com about judging her second reality show, her experience in the show and much more.



What made you say yes to Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa?
First time when I did TV I was apprehensive about it, but for me it is easy as I just have to give them only one day a week. So from Monday to Saturday I am free to do whatever I can. I am flying to Barcelona this week then I will come back and shoot for this show, again I will fly to New York for my show and I will come back. My producers and even my friends keep on telling me that they are really enjoying this show, they are quite encouraging.
My reason for doing this show is that firstly, honestly I am telling you, that they pay me very well. As a technician I know how much hard work we have to do behind one shot. So we get a chance wear designer clothes, make up and try different hairstyles and as a girl I like to do all these things. All these things I never get to do in reality. It has become like family to me, as I come here, give my comments. It is great experience.

Do you think that it gives recognition too?
I am a very anti social person. I do not have too many friends and I do not even go for parties. I have a very boring life. When it comes to work I become alive. For 10 years of my life I wanted to be anonymous. I am a very lazy person, I do not have PR person to take care of my work. People do not even know what I am doing, where I am. People barely get in touch with me. So I always have been a recluse. During Nach Baliye I realized, when I used to go to UK suddenly there are so many Indians, they recognize you and walk up to you and say things like 'you danced so well, we loved your choreography'..this and that. Therefore suddenly there is a face attached to the name.

What is has been your memorable experience after doing this show?
When I was in Barcelona for my show, there was this Indian family.they came to me and told me that they like my show a lot. Then I was like what is this! I have work hard for all these years but only now people started recognizing me with just a TV show. So see the power of TV.

Did you face any kind of rejection in your struggling days?
Yes I have faced it a lot. For me my first rejection was that when I wanted to enter in the industry, my uncle said no to me by saying that humare ghar ki ladki kaam nahi karegi. Then I went to my mother's cousin Chinni Prakashji and told him that I want to learn choreography and he was also apprehensive but Rekha Prakashji, his wife, said that if your wife can work then why not the daughter of this family. Film wise also it happened, there was this director - I will not name him - it was one of my first films. I was shooting that song for a long time and in front of everyone he insulted me by saying that 'what do you think of yourself and I can easily throw you out of this set'. In the end that project was scrapped.

At any point of time do you get involved with contestants?
What people think about reality shows is that see these people keep on crying in the show but it's not like that. It is just at that moment. at that moment we can feel sorrow of someone else. Like last time when they showed facts about Monica's life, we all were crying .Of course such incidents never happen with everyone but when people start hating or rejecting you and even your own relatives too ban you then you realize who your true family member is and who is not. So we do identify with these contestants emotionally.

Have you ever had to go through any trying emotional moments such as these?
It happens with everyone and as an artist we all have to work in such situations. Recently when I was shooting for Kambakkht Ishq, I packed up at 9 pm and 15 minutes before that I got a message from my family that my grand father is taking last breath. I had to hurry up. When I reached home, he was taking his last breath, he had cancer. I reached home, I saw his face, he was breathing that time and after 30 seconds he left.
Of course the next day I had to attend my shoot. I am fulfilling my grand father's wish by doing this work. He was a great dancer otherwise my father's side of family is into construction and we have born with a golden spoon. I still remember when I used to go out for getting something I had full battalion which would follow me everywhere. But my mother instill this value that apne balbute par kuch karke dikhao.

What does she think about all these contestants?
I am very shocked! Some of them are doing daily soaps and some of them are playing for our country. But when I get to see a result, that's when I realize that they have worked so hard. I am simply amazed. It is almost like a live performance, there is no second chance here.

How is your co-ordination with Saroj Khan?
It is great. It is a dance based show and in such shows choreographers' opinion is very important. As a judge my aim is that my judgment should affect their performances...they should do better after that. And I am ready to become tough for that. We have lots of nauk jhonk. Saroji is like God mother for me. When I get confused while taking any decision I ask her.
