Parul Chauhan in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa

Parul Chauhan will soon be dancing to a new tune. The actress has signed for the next season of the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. Parul who has already started preparations for the show gave us the details.
"Yes, It's true. I am doing Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa. I have also started practicing for it from this week. This is my first reality show and I am quite tensed about it. I am also hoping to learn many new things while doing this show, reveals the actress.
The actress says she has the support of her production house and co-stars who are egging her on everyday.

"All my co-actors are also happy that I am participating in this show. Only thing they are advising me is not to cry as I am a very emotional person and I cannot hold back my tears at all. I am mentally prepared for this show as I have seen many reality shows. And I am also ready to take all good and bad comments," says the confident Parul.

Dance master Saroj Khan is going to be one of the judges of the show. Is she worried about meeting her expectations?

"I have met her during her show and I found her sweet. In fact she told me that she follows my show. At that time I thought she must be telling it like that but when she started speaking about the current tracks, I was completely impressed. Moreover it is natural that she will get upset if I will spoil her pooja as I know dance is like pooja for her," says Parul.

So what does she think about her competitors and all the controversies that come with being in a reality show?

"I do not think that the presence of bigger and more famous people will affect to me as a competition is ultimately just a competition'Though this is the first time I am participating in one. I am also scared of it but all big people too get scared of performing at stage. As far as controversies are concerned I want to experience that too. I have only seen that on television but I have not experienced that in reality," laughs Chauhan.

The expected to contestants of the show are Ram Kapoor,Anand Raj Anand.Karan Singh Grover,Prem Chopra,Vijayendra Singh,Hard Kaur,Gauhar Khan,Bhagyashree,Shilpa Shukla and others.

Apart from Saroj Khan, Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Juhi Chawla will be the judges while the hosts of the show will be the same as last year - Mona Singh and Rohit Roy.

Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa will be starting at the end of February and is expected to replace the current Indian Idol.

Juhi gets judgmental

Juhi Chawla makes her official TV debut with Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa as a judge.

Juhi Chawla will be judging the third edition of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Just before she took centerstage at the press conference, the channel showed an AV of Shah Rukh Khan commenting on his good friend taking on the role of a judge. Khan said that Juhi was incapable of judging anyone negatively and will give all the contestants 10 on 10. He even let out a 'secret'. He said that whenever anyone gave a bad performance all they had to do was look at her sadly and she would melt down and give full marks. "She's so softhearted that she can never be mean or rude to anyone," said SRK.

Minutes later, when we met her for an interview, she flashed her trademark smile and said, "Shah Rukh has made me out to be some sort of a chocolate bar. But he's right to an extent. I can never bring myself to be mean or rude to anyone. I do realise how those contestants must feel for dancing on stage without any retakes. I'm an actress, so I know how it is when others comment or criticise your performance."

Chawla says that she will, however, make the proceedings more interesting "because Sarojji (Khan) and Vaibhavi (Merchant) are there unki class lene ke liye."

So has Juhi ever been shouted at by Saroj Khan while shooting for her dances? "Surprisingly, no. Sarojji has always been sweet to me. Maybe because though I wasn't a great dancer, I would put in all efforts to please her."

Given her comic sense of timing, wouldn't judging a Comedy Circus or a Laughter Challenge been more up her alley? "May be yes, but I'd be looking more at the contestants' attitude, the judging would be from a humane point of view. Sarojji aur Vaibhavi hain na dance ki nitty-gritties dekhne ke liye."

The actress also candidly mentioned how Sony sent her home a "mota (fat) cheque". So what else besides Vitamin M prompted her to take up Jhalak..? She smiles, "Offers had been coming for the last two years but the timing seemed to be right now."

Ask her if she is prepared for all the scrutiny by the media on her role as a judge and she says, "Well, after all these years of being in the public eye, one gets used to the media glare. And do I have a choice given the way media has grown and its presence everywhere?"

Her co-star with two left feet? Sunny Deol? She laughs, "Well I didn't say anything. You said it. But Sunny more than made up in the other aspects of acting."

Her favourite dancers. "Hrithik moves like a dream and I'm fond of Shahid too."

Finally, how's her character of Minty, the wife of a hyper, successful film producer in Luck By Chance been accepted? "You know while shooting, when I saw the clothes I was wearing and my look in it, I thought, mar gaye, God knows what have I got myself into! But after the film released, the response has been overwhelming. Though I completely flipped over Rishiji's character - roly-poly, cute, adorable, wasn't he good?"

'I haven't danced in my life'

The innocence is still in place. When you look at Bhagyashree dancing to a slow number on the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa stage, you feel time has stood still. We met her at the launch of the show in which she is a participant. Excerpts from a conversation

Your pigeon and you had become very popular in Maine Pyar Kiya. Years later Sonam Kapoor is now the kabootar girl.
Yes, I know. I absolutely love her in the Masakali song in Delhi 6 and I really think, with no offence meant to other heroines, that Sonam has brought in a certain freshness, an innocence, an Indianness into Hindi films. She is exceptionally pretty.

Why Jhalak..?
Because I had promised myself that I'll do something new in 2009.

Are you anxious?
Yes, a bit. You know the first day when we all met our choreographers, they closed the rehearsal hall door and told us, 'Now think you are at home and dance as if no one is watching you.' I told them, "But I never do this at home." (Smiles).

What did your husband and kids say?
They said, 'Go ahead, have fun but don't make a fool of yourself on national television.'

Will you play the Maharashtrian card, like Sonali Kulkarni did last year?
Definitely no. I'm an Indian and wouldn't want my caste to be a talking point for garnering votes. It's simple. I want to dance well and win my viewers over. Dance has never been a way of life for me. I haven't even danced in my films, so it will be a challenge.

Who do you think will be your toughest competitor?
Considering I don't know anything about dance, they all are. Competition to me is all about bettering yourself and doing well with a lot of heart and hard work.

But Gauhar Khan and Mohinder Amarnath are a treat to watch. While Gauhar is all sexy and groovy, Mohinderji being such a senior is such a good sport, he's inspiring.

Do you think Jhalak.. will open doors for you as far as career is concerned?
Don't know. I strictly believe in enjoying the journey and not worrying about the destination.

Sooraj and his sister Kavita are making serials for TV. Would you consider acting in them?
Any acting offer has to be very different from what I'm known for. I have had the opportunity of doing some great roles like a husband-beater and that of a woman who has to deal with hardened criminals in regional films. If something gives me a chance to stretch my limits, I'll do it.

Will Ugesh work his magic on Jhalak?

Magician Ugesh Sarcar is already well known in India for his mind-blowing tricks. From reading minds to making objects float, India's answer to Criss Angel will now be judged on whether he is as spellbinding a dancer as he is a magician.

We caught up with Ugesh, who is partnered with choreographer Tina Sachdev, and asked him what tricks he has up his sleeve to outdo his competitors on Jhalak.

Why did you take up Jhalak?
Well, it's because of Misark Bhakaria. He's actually haunted me by continuously telling me that I should do it because it would be fun. That is why I am here.

How has been the experience so far?
It's been great! My body hurts, it hurts so bad that I can't even sleep at night but otherwise it's real fun.

Does your magic work here?
It's crazy because I've promised myself not to use my magic in dance. I am just going to go ahead and work hard.

How would you rate yourself as a dancer?
Well, let's just say that I am being overambitious here (laughs).

What are your strengths that will help you to survive longer?
Give me 10,000 years and I'll be the best dancer (laughs). Frankly, I don't think I have any strength. If you don't trust me, go ask my choreographer. She keeps cursing herself saying 'why did I get this guy?'

Who do you see as your toughest competitor on the show?

All of them! All the other 11 contestants have some sort of background in dance, even Mohinder ji, at this age, is so fit and fine so lets see.

Of all the judges, who are you most scared of?
I am not scared of the judges because they are here because of what they are. I respect them and tomorrow, if they tell me that I am dead, then that means I am dead. So, I like and respect all of them.

Is there any negativity between the participants because of the competition?
No, I don't think so. If negativity emerges, it will probably be if you take the first step in that direction.

Are you going to be vocal on the show?
I am a kind of person who is happier doing things. All I do is I keep irritating my choreographer and everybody around.

How much time have you been dedicating to the rehearsals?
As of now I am spending 6-7 hours, because rest of my time I have to give to other things too.

Are you scared of the eliminations which will happen every week?
I am just here to enjoy and have fun. I am here to entertain people.

Do you think there is any kind of magical trick to win the show?
Dance, dance and dance really well. Let's see what I can do.

Catch Sarcar on the dance floor from February 27 on Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa (Sony TV).

Battle is on before it starts for Gauhar Khan

Gauhar Khan, one of the contestants on Jhalak Dikkhla Jaa 3, is rumoured to be having problems with not only a fellow contestant, Parul Chauhan, but also the person she has to get along with, her choreographer Hanif Hilal.

Talking about Parul, she says, "I don't have any issues with Parul. I had a problem with the fact that she was allowed to come in a little later than the others because she is doing a daily soap. I don't agree with such concessions. And I am actually quite fond of her. We speak to each other very often. I do not know why this has been taken to be true. But I guess, reality shows are always like this."

However, the actress does have a problem with her choreographer Hanif Hilal, whose she feels isn't very committed to winning the show. She says, "See, I am not here to waste my time. I want to win the show like every one else. I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I'd benefit in one way or another. I have taken up the show to gain exposure."

Hanif, she says, only spoke of his weaknesses when they first met, instead of what they would do in the show. She says, "He told me that he is weak in a few areas and brought the conversation to the end there. My confidence level dropped, obviously. He should be talking about new ideas and how he is going to help me win the show."

So, would she like to change her choreographer? "Yes," she says, "Why not? But since I have no option, I guess I'll just have to make amends and live with it."

Gauhar also mentions that she is fully prepared for the judges' comments. She says, "Everything is fair in love and war."

    Monica's missing talking about Rahul?
Monica Bedi is quite happy working in reality shows on the telly.
    Monica Bedi More Pics

Reason? She says that if biggies from B'wood can work on the telly, so can she! "Even established actors like Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar are working on the small screen. Also, it is more exciting to watch stars on the television. When people watch reality shows, they accept you more quickly, as they get to see you more often. This hardly happens in a movie," says Monica, who was in the city recently. The actress will soon be seen in a dance reality show.

And what about her 'good friend' Rahul Mahajan? " Nahi yaar, uske saath kuchh bhi nahi hai . While on the show, there were so many stories linking the two of us. However, it is funny to note that nobody wants to ask me anything about him anymore," she says. Well, if you really wanna talk about him, we're all ears, Monica!

JDJ: Behind-the-scenes gossip from day 1

The first day of a reality show is usually not very dramatic as tensions are yet to erupt. But Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa's first day was a bit different. Here are few details about what happened in the show which will air Friday at 9pm.

"It was not a very good day for Guahar Khan, surely. As far as her performance was concerned, it wasn't bad. But she could not hide her issues with her choreographer and spoke to the judges about it after the performance. Hanif Hilal is Guahar's choreographer. You will have to watch the episode to find out what happened right after that, but I will tell you that, by the end of it, Gauhar was in tears," a source said.
"Most of the stars got their friends to support them. Hanif's ex girlfriend Pooja Bedi came to wish him luck. It was Karan Singh Grover's birthday, so he had his friends on the sets. However, he didn't get too great a response from the judges. The surprise package of the evening was Hard Kaur, who was brilliant. Another good performer was music composer Anand Raj Anand, who asked Vaibhavi Merchant to come on stage to perform with her," the source concludes.

Boxing champion Vijendra Singh was also supposed to be a part of the show, but cancelled at the last moment. So now, Baichung Bhutia has replaced him. And our source tells us that his performance was excellent, even though he got only three days to practice.

This year's Jhalak has 12 contestants. So, six contestants will perform in each episode.

Jhalak… fell on my lap - Shiv Pandit

Let's start with a quiz question – what is common to Parmeet Sethi, Archana Puran Singh, Mona Singh, Rohit Roy, Shweta Tiwari and Shiv Pandit? Rack your brains and search your telly memories to find out. The correct answer lies in a reality show. Yes, they are all hosts of Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa (JDJ) since the year it started. While the others are well-known film and television personalities, Shiv Pandit (this year's host along with Shweta Tiwari) is a somewhat odd man out in this list. He shot to fame with his hosting IPL cricket matches last year and has also played a role in the serial FIR . Tellychakkar spoke exclusively to the handsome actor-turned-host. Excerpts from the interview.

Congrats on bagging the prized role of Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa's host. Tell us something about how this happened.

Honestly speaking, it fell in my lap! Sony called and offered me this and there was reason for me to say No! I am really grateful to Sony authorities for giving me two most prized shows in my career – IPL matches and JDJ. After taking up the job, I did have some issues with the dates and was a bit confused on what would be the best way to schedule JDJ. I had a couple of meetings with Sony and we could iron out the problems. Jhalak is a very good show, I am very excited to be a part of this.

You will be co-hosting the show with Shweta Tiwari – one of the most senior actresses on Indian television. Are you nervous?

Not at all! On the contrary it is my proud privilege to work with her. We have finished shooting for the first episode and had a gala time with her. The shooting went of perfectly. I am extremely happy that I could pair up with such a good performer, dancer and actress.

Shweta Tiwari has been in the news for her tantrums on the sets. How has your experience been?

One advantage or disadvantage of working with me is the fact that I am very thick skinned. I don't care if someone is snooty, wants to talk or to ignore. I understand that we are in this for professional reasons and the faster we complete our shooting the better.

Having said that let me clarify that I have had no problems whatsoever working with her. We have a very good working relationship and I sincerely hope that this continues.

Recently, the Zee authorities replaced the host (Tarana) in Dance India Dance with Saumya Tandon because of the apparent lack in chemistry between Tarana and Jay Bhanushali. There are also reports saying that because Tarana is much older than Jay Bhanushali, this did not work out. What are your thoughts on this controversy?

I am not sure whether age is the reason for replacement in the show or not. I am not aware of what went inside and thus would not like to comment. However, if you are indirectly asking me about my chemistry with Shweta, I would say audience is the ultimate judge. On my part, I sincerely hope and will try my best to ensure that Shweta and I have a very good bonding.

Tell us something about your looks in the show.

(smiles) Designer Hemant Trivedi has worked on my looks and we have had many discussion sessions to finalise my looks for the show. During IPL last year, the audience could see me in lots of T-shirts and jeans. However, in JDJ I will be required to wear a lot more formal dresses as per needs of the show. I feel, clothes should not be so flashy that they draw the audience attention away from you.

What do you feel about the contestant line up this year?

This year's list of participants has a number of surprises. For example who could imagine sports personalities like Mohinder Amarnath and Baichung Bhutia shaking their legs in the show. And then there are good dancers like Gauhar Khan and Monica Bedi who will charm the audience with their dancing skills and good looks!

You have acted in a Tamil film – Leelai. Tell us something about your first film experience.

I am very fortunate to have worked under a very famous banner down South (Oscar Films – V. Ravichandran) . But I must admit that it was not cakewalk for me. Language is a big barrier for me and my voice will be dubbed for the dialogues. However, I have five song sequences in the film and had to lip-sync the songs. It was pretty tough! I had to mug up dialogues even during a break when everyone else was relaxing. Leelai is a romantic comedy where actress Mansi Parekh (India Calling fame) will be pairing with me. I play a character who takes everyone for granted and does not care about emotions. That is when he meets Mansi in his office. The film is about how his life changes after that. Leelai will release in April.

We know very little about your personal life. What's happening on that front?

I am from Delhi and have a brother and a sister. While my brother is a very good footballer, my sister has come to Mumbai to work behind the camera as a technical expert. I came to Mumbai seven years back and started my career as a RJ. I have done diametrically opposite shows like FIR where I played Hanuman Prasad, and hosted IPL matches. I could manage this because of my English literature academic background and meeting people from all strata of the society.

    And, I am single!

ANAND RAAJ ANAND & ROZITA RAJPUT

    ANAND RAJ ANAND
Anand Raj Anand has multi-faceted skills - writing lyrics, composing and singing. His love for music and desire to create his own identity brought him to Mumbai which heralded his struggle in the industry. After a long fight the musician recorded seven songs out of which three were used in the film Masoom. One of Anand's creations 'Chota Baccha Samajhke…' became an instant hit and he was flooded with offers. Anand composed some good melodies for films like Major Saab, Qila, Pardesi Babu and Ek Hindustani. At a time when the industry is flooded with new beats and remixes, Anand has adapted to the market's requirements and yet retained the unique quality of his music.
