Praising Janhvi for her great choice in movies
Juhi Chawla will be judging the third edition of Sony's Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa. Just before she took centerstage at the press conference, the channel showed an AV of Shah Rukh Khan commenting on his good friend taking on the role of a judge. Khan said that Juhi was incapable of judging anyone negatively and will give all the contestants 10 on 10. He even let out a 'secret'. He said that whenever anyone gave a bad performance all they had to do was look at her sadly and she would melt down and give full marks. "She's so softhearted that she can never be mean or rude to anyone," said SRK.
Minutes later, when we met her for an interview, she flashed her trademark smile and said, "Shah Rukh has made me out to be some sort of a chocolate bar. But he's right to an extent. I can never bring myself to be mean or rude to anyone. I do realise how those contestants must feel for dancing on stage without any retakes. I'm an actress, so I know how it is when others comment or criticise your performance."
Chawla says that she will, however, make the proceedings more interesting "because Sarojji (Khan) and Vaibhavi (Merchant) are there unki class lene ke liye."
So has Juhi ever been shouted at by Saroj Khan while shooting for her dances? "Surprisingly, no. Sarojji has always been sweet to me. Maybe because though I wasn't a great dancer, I would put in all efforts to please her."
Given her comic sense of timing, wouldn't judging a Comedy Circus or a Laughter Challenge been more up her alley? "May be yes, but I'd be looking more at the contestants' attitude, the judging would be from a humane point of view. Sarojji aur Vaibhavi hain na dance ki nitty-gritties dekhne ke liye."
The actress also candidly mentioned how Sony sent her home a "mota (fat) cheque". So what else besides Vitamin M prompted her to take up Jhalak..? She smiles, "Offers had been coming for the last two years but the timing seemed to be right now."
Ask her if she is prepared for all the scrutiny by the media on her role as a judge and she says, "Well, after all these years of being in the public eye, one gets used to the media glare. And do I have a choice given the way media has grown and its presence everywhere?"
Her co-star with two left feet? Sunny Deol? She laughs, "Well I didn't say anything. You said it. But Sunny more than made up in the other aspects of acting."
Her favourite dancers. "Hrithik moves like a dream and I'm fond of Shahid too."
Finally, how's her character of Minty, the wife of a hyper, successful film producer in Luck By Chance been accepted? "You know while shooting, when I saw the clothes I was wearing and my look in it, I thought, mar gaye, God knows what have I got myself into! But after the film released, the response has been overwhelming. Though I completely flipped over Rishiji's character - roly-poly, cute, adorable, wasn't he good?"

Your pigeon and you had become very popular in Maine Pyar Kiya. Years later Sonam Kapoor is now the kabootar girl.
Yes, I know. I absolutely love her in the Masakali song in Delhi 6 and I really think, with no offence meant to other heroines, that Sonam has brought in a certain freshness, an innocence, an Indianness into Hindi films. She is exceptionally pretty.
Why Jhalak..?
Because I had promised myself that I'll do something new in 2009.
Are you anxious?
Yes, a bit. You know the first day when we all met our choreographers, they closed the rehearsal hall door and told us, 'Now think you are at home and dance as if no one is watching you.' I told them, "But I never do this at home." (Smiles).
What did your husband and kids say?
They said, 'Go ahead, have fun but don't make a fool of yourself on national television.'
Will you play the Maharashtrian card, like Sonali Kulkarni did last year?
Definitely no. I'm an Indian and wouldn't want my caste to be a talking point for garnering votes. It's simple. I want to dance well and win my viewers over. Dance has never been a way of life for me. I haven't even danced in my films, so it will be a challenge.
Who do you think will be your toughest competitor?
Considering I don't know anything about dance, they all are. Competition to me is all about bettering yourself and doing well with a lot of heart and hard work.
But Gauhar Khan and Mohinder Amarnath are a treat to watch. While Gauhar is all sexy and groovy, Mohinderji being such a senior is such a good sport, he's inspiring.
Do you think Jhalak.. will open doors for you as far as career is concerned?
Don't know. I strictly believe in enjoying the journey and not worrying about the destination.
Sooraj and his sister Kavita are making serials for TV. Would you consider acting in them?
Any acting offer has to be very different from what I'm known for. I have had the opportunity of doing some great roles like a husband-beater and that of a woman who has to deal with hardened criminals in regional films. If something gives me a chance to stretch my limits, I'll do it.

Will Ugesh work his magic on Jhalak?
Magician Ugesh Sarcar is already well known in India for his mind-blowing tricks. From reading minds to making objects float, India's answer to Criss Angel will now be judged on whether he is as spellbinding a dancer as he is a magician.
We caught up with Ugesh, who is partnered with choreographer Tina Sachdev, and asked him what tricks he has up his sleeve to outdo his competitors on Jhalak.

Jhalak… fell on my lap - Shiv Pandit | |||
| Let's start with a quiz question – what is common to Parmeet Sethi, Archana Puran Singh, Mona Singh, Rohit Roy, Shweta Tiwari and Shiv Pandit? Rack your brains and search your telly memories to find out. The correct answer lies in a reality show. Yes, they are all hosts of Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa (JDJ) since the year it started. While the others are well-known film and television personalities, Shiv Pandit (this year's host along with Shweta Tiwari) is a somewhat odd man out in this list. He shot to fame with his hosting IPL cricket matches last year and has also played a role in the serial FIR . Tellychakkar spoke exclusively to the handsome actor-turned-host. Excerpts from the interview. Congrats on bagging the prized role of Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa's host. Tell us something about how this happened. Honestly speaking, it fell in my lap! Sony called and offered me this and there was reason for me to say No! I am really grateful to Sony authorities for giving me two most prized shows in my career – IPL matches and JDJ. After taking up the job, I did have some issues with the dates and was a bit confused on what would be the best way to schedule JDJ. I had a couple of meetings with Sony and we could iron out the problems. Jhalak is a very good show, I am very excited to be a part of this. You will be co-hosting the show with Shweta Tiwari – one of the most senior actresses on Indian television. Are you nervous? Not at all! On the contrary it is my proud privilege to work with her. We have finished shooting for the first episode and had a gala time with her. The shooting went of perfectly. I am extremely happy that I could pair up with such a good performer, dancer and actress. Shweta Tiwari has been in the news for her tantrums on the sets. How has your experience been? One advantage or disadvantage of working with me is the fact that I am very thick skinned. I don't care if someone is snooty, wants to talk or to ignore. I understand that we are in this for professional reasons and the faster we complete our shooting the better. Having said that let me clarify that I have had no problems whatsoever working with her. We have a very good working relationship and I sincerely hope that this continues. Recently, the Zee authorities replaced the host (Tarana) in Dance India Dance with Saumya Tandon because of the apparent lack in chemistry between Tarana and Jay Bhanushali. There are also reports saying that because Tarana is much older than Jay Bhanushali, this did not work out. What are your thoughts on this controversy? I am not sure whether age is the reason for replacement in the show or not. I am not aware of what went inside and thus would not like to comment. However, if you are indirectly asking me about my chemistry with Shweta, I would say audience is the ultimate judge. On my part, I sincerely hope and will try my best to ensure that Shweta and I have a very good bonding. Tell us something about your looks in the show. (smiles) Designer Hemant Trivedi has worked on my looks and we have had many discussion sessions to finalise my looks for the show. During IPL last year, the audience could see me in lots of T-shirts and jeans. However, in JDJ I will be required to wear a lot more formal dresses as per needs of the show. I feel, clothes should not be so flashy that they draw the audience attention away from you. What do you feel about the contestant line up this year? This year's list of participants has a number of surprises. For example who could imagine sports personalities like Mohinder Amarnath and Baichung Bhutia shaking their legs in the show. And then there are good dancers like Gauhar Khan and Monica Bedi who will charm the audience with their dancing skills and good looks! You have acted in a Tamil film – Leelai. Tell us something about your first film experience. I am very fortunate to have worked under a very famous banner down South (Oscar Films – V. Ravichandran) . But I must admit that it was not cakewalk for me. Language is a big barrier for me and my voice will be dubbed for the dialogues. However, I have five song sequences in the film and had to lip-sync the songs. It was pretty tough! I had to mug up dialogues even during a break when everyone else was relaxing. Leelai is a romantic comedy where actress Mansi Parekh (India Calling fame) will be pairing with me. I play a character who takes everyone for granted and does not care about emotions. That is when he meets Mansi in his office. The film is about how his life changes after that. Leelai will release in April. We know very little about your personal life. What's happening on that front? I am from Delhi and have a brother and a sister. While my brother is a very good footballer, my sister has come to Mumbai to work behind the camera as a technical expert. I came to Mumbai seven years back and started my career as a RJ. I have done diametrically opposite shows like FIR where I played Hanuman Prasad, and hosted IPL matches. I could manage this because of my English literature academic background and meeting people from all strata of the society. And, I am single! |
