Does today's India NEED these regressive/sadistic tracks?

As an American born to Indian parents and an absolute lover of Indian culture, I can say India is progressing fast, like really really fast. We cannot afford to just sit and let our TV culture become regressive when the country is seeing a phase where chaiwalas and auto drivers are giving you the opportunity to use PAYTM. It honestly and seriously annoys me to see that writers think desis ( Indians and Pakistanis) are so driven by emotions, that they can show emotional abuse to give people a false idea of what real life love and marriages are about. I have NOTHING against the cast, but how many of you think that the cast would watch this kind of a track and enjoy it ? Everyone in India today, especially the youth is becoming so westernized that even the ones who work in such shows rarely watch their own shows, let alone other Indian shows. Many have confessed to it. How does that make you feel ? I don't know about you, but it makes me feel like my intelligence is being insulted, and my trust is being betrayed when good shows become stereotypical, regressive and sadistic. It's sad that the people involved are NOT bad people ( I don't hate anyone from the cast or PH), but I AM definitely offended that that they do this for a living, enjoy the success, watch way more intelligent ( Read:western) content in their personal lives, don't enjoy the regressive tracks of their own shows and yet gain massive appreciation from intelligent viewers who are trusting them with their time.

The new wedding promo where Anika is crying under the veil and Shivaay's hand motion telling her to cover her face is really bringing out the devil in me. Its 2016, do we really need to see the same concepts we saw 5 years ago in a certain show ? Are hate marriages and contract marriages that common that we need to show them on National TV ? How is this contributing to society or even giving us selfish pleasure ?

As a Non-Indian actor once said : " "If I feed you McDonalds every day, you'll get used to it eventually but you can only imagine what you'll look like after 20 years. Will that be my fault or yours?"

Sorry, for this seemingly unrelated and quirky quote, but it is a great analogy for the kind of senseless material we are being shown on the country's biggest channel. If we don't feed audiences better material, this is going to become the trend in TV, and thats how people will begin to think about relationships. And then the media will never be blamed (even though it should be) because we viewers never raise our voice or demand more intelligent, thought-provoking material!!

I do not know if anyone cares about these thoughts or how to get it across to content writers and channels. But, out of sheer concern for how Indians abroad don't have a good way to stay connected with culture, I request someone to please respect and understand my views. And please help me in sending this message to the right people, so that we can have meaningful change or atleast hope for it.

being a canadian in NYC myself, i am with you on this! i had actually mentioned this in shivika AT yesterday!
you know what is more appalling is that all such regressive shows are produced by females. its so funny, a female lead is not allowed to have a one night stand by her own choice; however, is forced into a marriage where she is emotionally tortured and just because its your fav pair on screen - everyone laps it up and finds it oh so cute and omg so much tashan btw them - when in reality, it would amount to some kind of lawsuit atleast here in states
yeah, and none of these actors watch indian shows, i have seen some interviews - not specifically of this cast, the way they talk - it seems like they see it beneath themselves if they watch any indian content! its all american shows that they talk about - talk about deceiving the audience 😆

i watched this show as one of my friends recommended and i loved the "hey forget your life for 20 mins and come on a fun ride with us feel" every day! i had hopes for the first time from an indian show but shouldnt have had any 😉

Thanks for your reply and for being with me on this lol 😊

@bold- Yes, it bothers me beyond belief that they look down upon and stay away from the very shows that they want people to watch so that they can have a successful career. What are the people getting ? temporary entertainment mixed with sadism, classism, regressiveness. I thought it would change by 2016, but I am seeing the same tracks I saw 5 years ago when I was in high school. How do we make them realize this? lol

Exactly. There really is a limit to how much creative liberty there can be. The media is so powerful, and they realize this only for their own benefit which is to make money. they never realize that people need to grow from these shows.

You voiced what I feel...its high time and in some way these shows influence people in their thoughts... these negativity can be cut off...

I still don't understand why the need of marriage ..to develop a love story..? I mean it could have been so different and it would have been a fresh start...

They could have shown, Annika leaving OM... Tia not reaching the venue...and shaadi cancelling... Shivaay slowly realizing TIA and ANNika's truth and arriving to save Annika just in time from Daksh...

To avoid any gaps in story they have the other two leads story also...I don't see why this saas bahu drama must continue, or this shaadi with angst and hatred should continue in shows...why can't it be more realistic and modern...????

In my opinion evening telly shows affect the audience coz subtly they are getting a message of over powering , or subduing women or men vice versa...and I believe what u see will actly affect u...so when in the outside we fight for liberal thinking , empowerment , standing for oneself and all why should our shows have the same old story...

But I like this show...coz eventually they will have to deal with major plot brotherhood. And it would be worth the wait...evenif such painful tracks should be taken ...considering all previous shows , brotherhood plot is new i think...with the men given importance in shows..LOL...😆

@bold- See this is the problem. Thanks for replying and dont mind me saying this. But why should we take these painful /poorly written tracks ? When we keep excusing such tracks, give them chances to show better tracks in the future, watch them without collective rebellion, they think that its ok to show such things and make money. Every track is important to prove how good a show is, why should we settle for a track which is poorly written ? They need to know that they can't take mental breaks and write intelligent stuff only when they feel like it.

Exactly. Like I said, peoples intelligence and hunger for new, thought-provoking material cannot be underestimated. If Indians are finding this stupid, how can NRIs find it good, and how can this be quality material that you can show to your American friends when they wanna watch a show with you ?
