Diljit Dosanjh has received a nomination for the ‘Best Performance by an Actor’ category at the International Emmy Awards 2025. The recognition comes for his portrayal of legendary Punjabi singer Chamkila in the Netflix biographical drama Amar Singh Chamkila.
The film, directed by Imtiaz Ali, explores Chamkila’s journey from a Dalit Sikh family in Punjab to becoming a musical icon known for his bold lyrics and untimely death. Released on Netflix on April 12, 2024, it captures both his rise and tragic assassination at age 27.
Diljit’s performance has been praised for capturing Chamkila’s charisma and complexity. The film also stars Parineeti Chopra as Amarjot, Chamkila’s second wife, and features a soundtrack composed by A.R. Rahman. Critics and audiences alike have noted how Diljit balanced the singer’s charm with the darker aspects of his life.
Competition and global recognition
This year, Diljit faces stiff competition in the category from actors like David Mitchell, Oriol Pla, and Diego Vasquez. His nomination underscores the growing recognition of Indian cinema on global platforms and highlights the international appeal of regional stories.
Netflix has previously made history at the International Emmys. Delhi Crime won the Best Drama Series award in 2020. The series, created by Richie Mehta, fictionalised the 2012 Delhi gang-rape case and focused on the police investigation led by DCP Vartika Chaturvedi, played by Shefali Shah.
Recent and upcoming projects
Diljit was recently seen in Sardaar Ji 3, directed by Amar Hundal, co-starring Neeru Bajwa, Gulshan Grover, and Sapna Pabbi. The film released overseas on June 27. Looking ahead, Diljit is reportedly set to reunite with Imtiaz Ali for an untitled period drama set in the 1940s during India’s partition. Sharvari and Vedang Raina are also expected to be part of the project.
With this Emmy nomination, Diljit Dosanjh joins the growing list of Indian actors gaining international attention, demonstrating how compelling storytelling and regional narratives continue to resonate with global audiences.
