Hey, good post. And believe me, I hear you. I find it so frustrating that people enjoy such stuff on TV. I don't mind some dramatization, but the concept has to be practical for me. I generally tend to stay away from TV shows for that reason, I know that at the end, I will be disappointed.

I do agree that India is progressing at a very fast pace. But I also believe that it may be the more fast paced in the urban areas. And even here, maybe the present generation is more open minded in comparison to our parents and grand parents. As amazed as I am at times, much to my chagrin, I realize that the orthodoxy, traditionalism, submissiveness, martyr-ism are all so much higher in my parents / in-laws than it is in our generation. They are still bound by rituals and societal pressures against practicality in a lot of occasions.

Since the general TV watching audience is maybe middle-aged (for all of us watch shows on laptops / online I am assuming), such tracks may still be popular.

Thanks for your reply! I have quit on this show because I know I am stupid and will end up really hurt when the wedding track airs because I almost broke my tab after watching the promo. Ok, the audience is middle aged. but how many of those people had hate marriages ? This producer shows it as if its perfectly healthy and normal and common for people to force each other for marriage.

I understand your point, but then in Pakistan itself, didn't Zindagi Gulzar Hai do well? It had modern couples' problems and not much abuse by in-laws but the writing stole the show, so even people with sad lives loved how the female lead learns to appreciate life's blessings. So, it is not necessary that people want to only want to watch their sort of problems on screen or they can't watch people get married in a normal way like the leads on ZGH got married. The writing was so tactful and skillful that people loved the real problems. These hate marriages and contract marriages are not as real and that is not the reason why they can hope to strike a cord with the audiences. They should show arranged marriages if they really want to connect with TRP audience, but this OTT hate marriage is unacceptable and people are being forced to love it.
I will have to respectfully disagree with you on this, but I really appreciate you giving your insight on it.

Yes Zindagi Gulzar hai did extremely well and its one of the best Pakistani shows I have seen. But you might know this, but ZGH has been inspired from a novel and it was adapted/written by the owner of the channel herself. She took a risk and it paid off !!! There has been many others like this, but that was years ago, when I was a child. Dramas like Dhoop Kinarey, Tanhayian, Ankahi, Aangan Tera, classic stuff !!! But that was almost 2 decades ago, an entirely different era, where the audience appreciated beautiful and meaningful stories.

So I agree with you, that people should take more risks and come up with more progressive and entertaining content, rather then spread so much negativity through regressive content. Its been only off late for the past few years that slowly the trend is changing back to the dramss which were loved and appreciated ages ago, but all I'm saying is that if PH needs to take the risk, then even audience needs to change their ways of thinking and their taste in shows.

@bold- Agreed. People will change their taste if they see enough of new content in shows, if they keep seeing hate marriage, they will find it amazing. I don't want my future children to grow up thinking thats normal in Desi culture lol 😆

😆

I was talking about the fact that no matter how the wedding happens, they will expect Anika to support Shivaay because she is now his wife.

The marriage itself is a different story all together... anything in the name of creativity I guess...

Ohhh Okay gotcha! Yes,youre right, once the absurd wedding happens, fandom will go insane when he occasionally decides to treat her like a human being.
They will also think shes very lucky to get that attention from her so-called husband, who according to Gul will "never" be able to accept her low socioeconomic status.
And the TRP audience will call her an ideal bahu for " making it work" regardless of how it all happened.

I couldn't argue otherwise. The show started of on such a good note and I was totally charmed by Anika and her character. I was finally hoping to see Anika starting her own business when I saw the earlier promo, which had me even more excited. Finally, a FL to look up to and a show with a Nayi soch. Then, came this whole sickening stalking track if Daksh and even more sickening track of the ML forcing a girl for a substitute bride. And we have to be able to empathize with Shivaay because he is of course under the impression that she is a sl*t and therefore is justified to force her to his whims and fancies. 🤢

I never thought this is what they meant by 'Nayi Soch'!

I don't even know why they started the Nayi Soch thingy, it was hilarious to me! And they had to convince people that RISHTA WAHI but soch nayi as if relationships ( between the audience and makers) break if channels dare to think differently.

That's what they're showing in their dumb, silly shows where people cant stand each other because of differences. And OMG I was dying to see Annika become a celebrity chef/interior designer/wedding planner, anything but a substitute bride who is crying under a veil 🤢 And then we're supposed to remember shes strong because she looks at herself in the mirror and says "she always took her own decisions, and now the biggest decision of her life is a forced one"! I lacked empathy at that point, one day shes running around laughing and working hard and the next shes in love with someone who thinks shes a s**t and then the day after that, she's a substitute bride. This soch is too nayi for me to digest.

Completely agree with you! Seriously! Regression is something I can't bear... but I think not a single show in India is void of it (except some comedy shows). And it has been bothering me for a long long time now that these regressive 'tashan' shows where the female lead is abused mentally n emotionally or physically (some shows have got vamps whose main motto in life is to get rid of female lead or perhaps the male lead as well).. these shows r topping the trp charts and the makers are churning out the tracks that appease the trp masses. for once if a maker does try to portray sensible concepts, his/her show will end up getting low trps despite a descent fan base and is wrapped up. Honestly I dunno I feel- Indian Content can get better if trps r banned I guess.
Well I'm a Resident Indian. Still, I have watched very few Indian shows, as every show I pick up has got regressive content right from the start or incorporates it in later stages. Sometimes when there is a good track I watch otherwise I wont. I had my hopes high on IShqbaaz bt it;s going the typical way and has become draggy now. Still I'm hoping the makers would redeem it. Being a fan of the show I'll watch the good content they're showing and skip the bad ones. Ofc when you talk about the stuff one should be showing on tv, the morals that a tv show must showcase, I can;t speak anything. Indians are indeed trying to change their ways... the makers are coming up with good concepts but only very few are able to break-free from the trp chains and deliver their content.
Well this is just my POV. And I'm not blaming any show/makers/cast. there were good shows in the past and few of them might be coming) Well can;t blame the makers now right? all they want is trp.. so obviously they'd churn out a story in that way.
I must say that I enjoy watching korean/taiwanese/chinese dramas more and I love their storylines... I also love how most of their shows stick to the original plot and are a limited episode collection. I don;t want to compare I'm just writing my thoughts. I hope that Indian TV too would improve it's content further more.
