Chapter Four

It was beyond her realm of reasoning to comprehend what was happening right now. After two years, she was on top of him, looking into his eyes... this was something, she never thought she would be able to do again. Her body was on his, and a shiver ran up her spine, as the desire to get even closer took over.

He was looking at her with the same intensity, the same desire... he also had the desire to close any gap between them. He too wanted to get closer to her... closer to his wife.

Two years had passed though. Two whole years. So much had changed. It was not as easy to hug each other, to touch each other, to be with each other again.

Time had created a larger distance.

Finally regaining her senses, she stood up, her heart hammering. She looked down, embarrassed to look at him.

Randhir got off the bed too.

"Let me go," Randhir told her.

He was afraid of staying. He was scared that if he stayed, then he would succumb to his inner desires. He would lose control over himself... maybe he would beg her to let him return to her.

No. He couldn't do that. He had to protect himself.

"Please don't go," Sanyukta responded, her lips quivering. "R - Randhir, please stay here."

He looked up at her and saw the fresh tears that glistened her eyes. How he wanted to hold her face, caress her cheeks, and tell her lovingly not to cry... he so badly wanted to pull her into a strong embrace and just hold her tightly. He wanted to tell her he loved her... but he was too weak, too cowardly, too afraid.

"I promise, there's nothing out there that can hurt me," he told her seriously.

She looked down and sniffled, having a hard time controlling her emotions. She was afraid that if he left, she may not see him again... what if he disappeared without a word, leaving her life once again?

"I'm - I'm not asking you to stay because I'm afraid there's something outside," she confessed, "I'm asking you to stay for me... I'm asking you to stay for... for this feeling."

Randhir watched the first tears pour out of her eyes, and he knew she was being sincere. He knew she was being genuine.

Sanyukta had left engineering, because he wasn't there to support her. She had left everything, because of him... and he like a fool, blamed her for being so career-oriented that she didn't see anything else.

How could everything go back to how they used to be now?

"Why did you leave engineering?" he finally asked, with a sigh, unable to even say no to a request that was so heartfelt.

A glint of hope reached her eyes, as he asked her... that meant that he wasn't leaving her so soon.

She reached out and took his hand with both of her shaking ones. Without saying a word, she lead him to her bed.

"Sit down," she whispered. "I'll tell you everything."

Randhir nodded and sat down on the bed. She sat next to him and took a deep breath.

"Ever since the blast, I blamed myself for Parth's accident," she admitted. "I still feel guilty... perhaps I could have stopped it, and he wouldn't have gone into a coma. I got scared to even touch a machine after that."

Randhir looked at her with surprise - how could Sanyukta Agarwal, someone who was so passionate about engineering, just turn away from a machine like that?

"Parth's accident affected me a lot," she whispered, tears rolling down her cheeks. "I just got really scared."

Randhir wanted to take her hand and tell her not to be scared... but how could he just touch her? Just because she held his hand earlier, didn't mean he could do the same. He was scared that the proximity would break all his barriers.

"It wasn't your fault," Randhir said to her.

She glanced up at him, as if she was shocked that he didn't blame her for Parth's accident. He looked ahead, unable to look into her wet eyes.

"It wasn't ever your fault," Randhir repeated. "You shouldn't feel responsible."

Sanyukta smiled through her tears. This was what she had been wanting to hear for so long. Randhir having faith in her, only lead to her having faith in herself.

She never wanted to be guilty in his eyes... and when he accused her for the blast, she felt guilty, because if she was a criminal in his eyes, how could she be a victim in her own? She saw herself through his eyes.

"You really think that?" she asked him.

"You loved engineering Sanyukta, but you were never so obsessed over it that you would risk someone's life," he said to her. "I'm surprised that you blamed yourself... how could you do that?"

Then he looked at her and saw that she was smiling.

"Yes Randhir, I loved engineering. I... I loved you too," she whispered, her smile turning into a pained expression. "That's why I never wanted to drop in your eyes. I always wanted you to have faith in me. How was I to believe in myself, when the one person I believed in more than anyone else couldn't even believe in me?"

Randhir couldn't take it anymore. His own eyes stung with tears as she said that. How could he be so cruel? He didn't even give her a chance. Just one impulsive decision, because things were going rocky for them, he gave up entirely on their relationship... and he did that while hurting her too? How could he do that?

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

What more could he say? He couldn't defend himself, because he had fallen in his own eyes.

"Don't be," she replied, and wiped her tears with her fingers. "I guess I just wasn't strong enough. It wasn't your fault... you just said what you felt. There's nothing wrong with that. And - and it's good you walked away from us."

Randhir was waiting for her to say that. That he did the right thing. Perhaps, because she found someone like Aryan... someone who supported her through thick and through thin, someone who wouldn't assume that she made a mistake because of his own blaring ego.

"I'm happy for you... for having found him," he said to her softly, and she looked up in shock.

"What?" she asked, sounding confused. "Who?"

"Aryan," Randhir responded. "I'm happy that you found someone who loves and respects you."

Sanyukta smiled widely before breaking down laughing. Was he serious? Aryan was just a friend to her. Aryan and her? He had to be joking.

Randhir frowned as she laughed at him, but then his frown turned into a smile. He loved it when she laughed.

"You're so silly," she told him, between fits of giggles.

"Why?" he asked, forcing himself to frown.

"Me and Aryan?" she asked, before she burst out laughing again.

"What's so funny?" he asked again, and crossed his arms over his chest, trying to look irritated.

"Aryan and I... I - I found him? Oh goodness!" she laughed so hard. "You know - you know Randhir. We f - found each other and oh - we secretly even got married!"

Then she fell back on the bed as she continued to laugh until her face turned red.

"Married? What?" Randhir asked impulsively, this time feeling himself get possessive, "How could you marry him?"

For goodness sake, they weren't even divorced yet!

Sanyukta sat back up on the bed and upon seeing his stern expression, had another fit of laughter.

"Still don't know the meaning of a joke!" she laughed, and then let her head fall on his shoulder, as she tried to control her laughing. "Oh - oh God! Aryan! Randhir... we're just friends! I can't even think of him in that way... it's too funny!"

Randhir looked down at her head which was resting on his shoulder and he felt his palms start to sweat, as goosebumps erupted all over his body. This closeness was not good.

"Oh," he simply said.

Finally, after she realized that she was resting her head on Randhir's shoulder, she reluctantly removed it. She had completely forgotten that the equation changed between them.

"Sorry," she responded, looking away from him awkwardly. "I got carried away I guess."

"Did you like anyone else then?" he asked.

"Do you?" she asked him, avoiding his question.

He looked at her with searching eyes... was she wondering whether perhaps he had moved on from her?

"I love someone," he said to her. "She... she's the only one I think about."

'It's you', he wanted to add, but of course he didn't. He looked away from her, his heart pounding. What had he just thought? He knew he loved her, and that feeling hadn't gone anywhere... but he had just admitted it to himself. He hadn't once let himself admit that he still loved Sanyukta in the last two years.

"You do?" she asked him, feeling her heart drop.

She was right. He had found someone prettier, perhaps someone who was his type.

"Yeah," he answered, and then looked back at her with a loving smile on his face.

She didn't like this. Those loving eyes had once been reserved only for her. How could he so easily think of someone else and have that look?

"I guess she's pretty," she replied coldly, and crossed her arms.

Randhir looked up at her with surprise. Was she jealous?

"Beautiful," he answered, half teasing her.

Then she glared at him.

"How could you?" she snapped. "We aren't even divorced!"

Randhir couldn't stop the smile that formed on his lips as she said that... she was so cute when she got possessive.

"We aren't?" he asked, sounding confused, as if he had completely forgotten about it. "Does that mean you don't want me to be with her?"

She felt her heart drop. She inhaled sharply, angry at him for even having looked at someone else.

"So all the things you said in college... all those loving words, you've told her? Have you kissed her too?" she asked angrily. "What else have you done? Did you marry her?"

Randhir smirked.

"I've told her all those loving words. I've kissed her. I've married her," he teased, and he wasn't even lying. "She's the most beautiful girl I've ever come across."

"Get up!" Sanyukta said angrily, as she stood up from the bed and faced him.

"Why?" he asked with a frown.

"You aren't allowed to stay here any longer! What will that girl think if you're with another girl all night? You can leave out of the window!" she said angrily.

"She would be so pissed," Randhir said, a loving smile taking over his features once again. "But you know... she's so cute when she gets possessive."

"I don't need to hear the details," Sanyukta snapped. "Why aren't you getting up? You were so eager to go earlier!"

She was so angry - not only had he moved on from her, he was narrating his life with the girl to her. Who did he think she was to tell all this to? Was he trying to piss her off or show off?

"I don't want to go," he said and then tilted his head to the side with a smirk.

Sanyukta stomped her foot with frustration. She grabbed his arm and tried to pull him off the bed, but of course he was so heavy. Instead, he tried to pull his arm away from her grip, and he pulled her down along with his arm, onto his lap, her body colliding with his chest.

"You MCP!" she yelled through gritted teeth. "You still haven't changed!"

"You're still the same Farzi," he retorted.

She was about to get off his lap, but he wrapped his arms around her back, holding her there.

Sanyuka was now livid. He was calling her Farzi, and on top of that, he wasn't letting her get off.

He reached up to caress her cheek softly.

"I don't have anyone in my life," he admitted and he felt her relax on top of him. "Just you."

"Me?" she asked with shock.

"Yes, you," he whispered, as he tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear. "It's always been you."

Sanyukta didn't know how to feel... a part of her was relieved that he hadn't found anyone else, but another part of her was scared... scared that he was opening up to her, she was scared that this wasn't real.

"You still love me?" she asked him with disbelief.

"I will always only love you," he responded with a smile.

Sanyukta felt her whole self cave as soon as he said that. She gave in. Her body would have even collapsed if he wasn't holding her to him, supporting her.

"I missed you," she whispered, tears in her eyes. "I missed you so much... how could you just leave me like that?"

"I regret leaving," he told her honestly.

Now that he was finally allowing himself to feel, all the regrets and the pain of the last two years came crashing down on top of him.

"I hate you," she whispered bitterly.

"I love you," he replied to her softly, his own eyes filling with tears. "I'm so sorry Sanyukta... I am so sorry."

"I hate you," she told him again, her voice cracking. "I hate you so much."

His heart ached to hear those words come out of her mouth, but he didn't let himself turn around due to fear this time... no, he was going to dive into the fire if that was what it came down to.

"I love you so much," he whispered.

"S - stop!" she whispered painfully, "It hurts."

Then she tried to get off his lap.

"Let me go," she urged.

"I don't want to," he whispered back to her.

"Please," she begged, as a fresh layer of tears coated her eyes.

His arms fell weak as she pleaded with him, and she pushed his arms aside and stood up. She turned away from him and wiped away her tears.

Randhir stood up too and approached her from behind. He wrapped his arms around her stomach and nuzzled his face against her neck, hugging her from behind. As she felt his stubble graze the skin of her neck, her stomach performed somersaults.

"Please Randhir," she begged. "Please don't do this to me... I won't be able to survive with this much pain."

"I love you," was all he said.

She squeezed her eyes shut and started to sob. Randhir let go of her from behind, and his own tears rolled down his cheeks, as he turned her around to face him and engulfed her in a tight embrace.

She cried against his chest, wrapping her arms around his body, clutching to his shirt and holding on to him for dear life. He sniffled and allowed his tears to fall into her hair, as she cried loudly against him.

"I can't take it," she muttered, her words muffling into his shirt. "It hurts."

"Sanyukta, I love you so much," he said hoarsely. "I miss you... p - please come back into my life."

She broke the embrace and looked up into his pained eyes with her own tear-filled ones.

"Randhir... I - I love you Randhir," she finally confessed, her whole body aching at the thought of being away. "I still d - do."

Without wasting even a single moment, he brought his hands up to cup her cheeks. They looked into each others eyes as they shared a silent look of agreement, before they both slowly leaned towards each other and allowed their lips to touch.

With this one touch, a jolt of electricity ran up both of their spines.

His hand reached behind her ear, holding the back of her head as he deepened the kiss, and one of her hands rested on the nape of his neck, the other one buried in his hair.

She kissed him back just as passionately, with just as much love as there had been the last time they kissed. With this one kiss, they unleashed their inner inhibitions, their desire to be together. Their lips moved together in perfect harmony, and even today, their knees went weak.

After they broke the kiss, Randhir rested his forehead against hers, taking deep breaths to catch some air and take in what had just happened. Sanyukta's hands fell to his hands that were on her cheeks.

"Don't ever leave me again," she whispered to him.

"Never ever," he replied honestly.

She held his hands tightly before leading him back to the bed and seating him down.

"You have to tell me what happened with you in the last two years," she said to him.

"Nothing," he replied seriously.

"What do you mean?" she replied with a frown.

"I swear - I worked and I slept. That's all I did everyday. I have no interesting stories or new friends like you," he told her.

"Is that why you were in the office so late?" she asked him curiously.

"Yes," he admitted with a nod, "It had become a habit."

"But why?" she asked him. "Why didn't you have fun?"

"Maybe I got scared of life after I left you," he admitted. "I was scared that if I let myself think for a moment, I would leave everything and run back to you."

"Why didn't you?" she asked him tearfully and hit his chest hard. "Why do you have to be so oversmart? Couldn't you have just ran back to me? I tried calling you but you never answered. H - how can you just not pick up your wife's phone calls?"

"My wife?" he asked, raising his eyebrows, and she looked down, blushing.

"Well... yes, of course," she whispered in response. "We got married remember?"

"Of course I remember," he replied.

"I have... I have something," she said, and then stood up before walking to her cupboard.

From her cupboard she pulled out a mangalsutra and a box of sindoor.

"Complete our wedding ceremony," she said to him, before handing him the two objects.

Randhir smiled and looked up at her.

"Where did you get this?" he asked her.

"I got these after the competition ended. I always had hope that one day you would come back to complete our marriage," she admitted.

"Come here," he murmured, and she sat on the bed next to him.

She closed her eyes as he picked up the mangalsutra and reached around her neck to tie it.

"I'm giving you my life in this mangalsutra right now," he said to her, as his fingers brushed over the soft skin of her neck.

She smiled and looked into his eyes, seeing the sincerity of his words reflected in them.

Then he picked up some of the sindoor with his fingers and leaned forward to fill the parting of her hair. As the red powder filled her parting, she looked up in his eyes.

"You're completely mine now," he said to her, placing the tub of sindoor on her bedside table.

"Not yet," she responded softly.

He looked at her with confusion, but his confusion was cleared in a moment when Sanyukta smashed her lips against his hungrily, pushing him down against the bed as she kissed him with so much passion that his heart nearly leaped out of his chest.

Randhir smiled against her lips knowing that tonight was going to be one of the most beautiful nights of their lives as a married couple.
