🤱Surrogacy: Womb For Hire! Is It A Blessing Or A Curse For Women?👶

Infertility can be a challenging obstacle to overcome, but advances in reproductive technology have provided new options for individuals and couples seeking parenthood.

Whether surrogacy is a blessing or a curse for women is a complicated issue that greatly depends on personal preference, ethics, the law, and context.

It compromises the dignity of the mother, even if her participation is voluntary, by merely treating her as a 'womb for hire.'

Surrogacy is sometimes viewed as a type of slavery or prostitution in which the surrogate is exploited by monetary incentives, social expectations of self-sacrifice, or both. Don't you think it sounds like victim blaming?

There are compelling arguments for and against surrogacy, so its effects on women are complex and neither a "curse" nor a "boon." For some, it offers a path to parenthood, but it also raises concerns about the commodification and exploitation of women's bodies.

Many are arguing that surrogacy gives women the freedom to make their own choices regarding their bodies. Both the intended mother and the surrogate may exhibit reproductive freedom as a result.

Critics argue that surrogacy can commodify women's bodies, reducing them to vessels for reproduction and potentially leading to unethical practices.

What are your thoughts on this crucial aspect of women's lives? Is surrogacy a bio-market byproduct or a benefit/ an added advantage to motherhood?

Great post on much needed topic.

Before going into debate in detail in my post later, one thing that I consider completely wrong is woman going through surrogacy process to have babies for their figure. That is pathetic. That is the point from where the word motherhood comes. If one cannot sacrifice their figure in exchange of that wonderful feeling of carrying their own child in their womb. I will clearly challenge the motherly emotion in such woman. After getting a child they can do various display of emotion but it all is meaningless when you sacrifice carrying your child in your womb for mere physical appearance.

There are many other scenarios of surrogacy and I will come to them in my next post.

sorry- I have blabbered unfiltered here .

It is useful for women who can not become pregnant. But the surrogates or the poor women should not be exploited or taken advantage of. They should be properly treated and should be given necessary monetary benefits. There are many problems with this method. like Surrogate mother can get attached to the baby. their mental health and physical health should be taken care of. and the surrogates should be trained not to get attached to the baby. Their identity should be kept hidden so that they don't get shamed by society.

Surrogacy is a bane and boon.

First of all, the people who could not conceive for various health reasons, could have gone for adoption. But some people in the society want to have a child of their own. So, surrogacy was invented. In some cases the surrogate is genetically related to the child and in other cases the surrogate is not genetically related to the child.

You will always find people in the society who were in need of money. They started becoming surrogates to bring a roof over their family or to feed the family or to save another life. Carrying a child for 9 months takes a toll and the surrogate can suffer conditions like post natal depression. So surely everyone involved needs education and care.

It looks like commercial surrogacy (a fees will be paid for carrying the child) is banned in many countries including India. Only Altruistic surrogacy is allowed in which case, the surrogate will be reimbursed for all pregnancy related expenses. That is all. No extra fees is paid.

For women, age between 20 and 30 is the best time to conceive. The chances of getting pregnant without any complications are high in that age bracket. But, for various reasons, women can't find time to get pregnant and raise a child at that age. If they have complications to get pregnant at a later stage, instead of going for adoption or the painful process of IVF, some well settled women are going for surrogacy to have their own (or at least their partner's) child.

Good or bad, it is up to them. As long as the process is not exploited and the surrogates come forward willingly without getting compromised, I guess it is okay.

Cheers..

Exactly, my point is the same. Especially in the instance of famous film celebrities such as SRK and Amir Khan, who chose surrogacy despite having grown-up children, only to flaunt their youthfulness in public by going around with a young kid in arms !!

It has given rise to a multimillion rupees industry that is sometimes described as "rent-a-womb," "womb-for-hire," and "baby making." It just conveys the notion that if you have name and fame, you can even buy a lady's womb for the selfish purpose of flaunting your young actor image.

Isn't it turning a woman's womb into a commodity for trade, use, and discord?

How far is it appropriate for actors who have already had children to exploit surrogacy for selfish reasons?

Well articulated. Agree, it is a boon and a curse, a lot depends on genuine need and ethics! Adore this conversation, truly thought provoking, thank you Madi!smiley20

Even people who are not married or having a partner.. like Ekta K, Tushar K, Karan Johar, etc used surrogate to have their biological child.. that too only boy baby.. smiley3

KJo’s children Yash and Roohi look like a foreigner.. so I guess, KJo got eggs of a foreigner to have his biological children.. smiley3

Rajesh Kattar and his wife did multiple IVFs.. and finally had twins.. Boys.. ( one of whom died in womb )

Krushna Abhishek and Kashmera Shah used surrogacy to have twins.. Boys..

In a patriarchal society in India.. Boy child is celebrated.. smiley39smiley29

1. Many people.. single or married use surrogate to have a BOY..

2. Many couples choose IVF to have a BOY..

3. Many couples living in India fly abroad with pregnant wives to get gender testing.. to find out if they have a BOY..

Every celebrity who has had a child through IVF or surrogate is a BOY.. Why?? Is it their luck or they specifically want Male child ( so they got IVF done with only Y sperms?? ) to continue their family business..

When celebrities can do it, so many couples belong to certain communities who desperately want a BOY.. try to achieve it be IVF or Gender reveal abroad or through surrogacy..

This want for BOY and make it happen into reality via IVF / surrogate is really bad.. sends a wrong message to the rest of the society..
