The Time I Loved You

Synopsis

Love was a game, a cruel game... and the players were never the lovers. There was only one player in this game, and that was destiny. Randhir and Sanyukta could never play the game of love, for they never stood a chance. Now two years after their separation, when fate makes them meet in an unexpected way, do they take a chance and play again, or have their past experiences left such a deep scar, that playing again is not even an option?

Chapter One

If there was one thing that life gave, it was second chances. Randhir wasted his second chance. He turned his back to the chance he once took, and never turned around to look back at it.

Now he was a different person. He was not the Randhir Singh Shekhawat who was the topper of FITE. He was not the same Randhir Singh Shekhawat who Sanyukta Agarwal had once called MCP (male chauvinist pig). He was completely different.

He turned his back to that second chance. He turned his back to her. He turned his back to everything... even to himself.

Randhir worked at NASA. He was involved in a mission they were working on. That was his life now. His job. Many called him a workaholic. The truth was that he didn't want any free time. If he had any time to himself, his mind would wander to his past... to the past that included her.

Once upon a time, they were in love and he ruined it. Then when he got his second chance, he ruined it for himself again... this time, he wasn't sure whether he did the right thing or not. All he knew was that it pained him to turn his back to her the day of the blast. His heart ached harder with each step he took away from her, but he had already made his choice.

The girl he once loved more than anything else in this world was Sanyukta Agarwal. They had even gotten secretly married, but everything was lost now. Everything.

One day, she appeared in front of him again in the most unexpected way, and that was the day where the scabs from the past were scratched open.

Sanyukta Agarwal got ready that morning and took a deep breath. She looked at herself in the mirror as her eyes filled with tears. She couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of sadness that she felt every single day for the last two years. Ever since he walked away from her, she had walked away from herself. She thought if he was here with her, even for a little while, then maybe she would be able to touch a machine. But now, even a machine scared her. She lost all confidence she had in herself.

Her phone began to ring and Sanyukta picked it up on the first ring.

"Sanyukta it's our first day of the job," Aryan said into the phone and Sanyukta smiled.

NASA had been hiring employees for their new mission and she had applied with Aryan, a skilled hacker from her previous workplace. The truth was that her manager fired her after being unable to deliver presentations to his standards. Aryan followed her out and used his connections to secure them both jobs at NASA. Aryan was a really nice guy, and was very supportive.

"Yes, I'll meet you at the headquarters?" she said into the phone.

"Yes," he answered, then paused for a moment. "Sanyukta, don't be nervous. You know it will go well."

She nodded and her eyes filled with tears again.

"Yes - I'll be fine," she told him, holding back the tears that were threatening to fall. "You - you get ready."

"Take care," he said and then hung up.

As soon as Sanyukta hung up the phone, her heart started to beat erratically. She had to do this. She had to face her new job. It was true that she lost her confidence, but that didn't mean that she could lose her life like this.

Sanyukta picked up her bag and went into the guest room where Parth was lying down.

She sat on the bed beside him and took his hand.

"Parth," she said, and he smiled, leaning against his pillow. "It's my first day."

"Everything will be okay," he told her supportively and squeezed her hand. "Just be brave... you're the brave Sanyukta who stopped for nobody. Do you remember?"

"That Sanyukta almost killed you," she whispered.

"It wasn't your fault Sanyukta," he told her. "Now please stop blaming yourself."

"It's hard when I feel like it was my fault. R - Randhir even left me because he didn't like who I was," she whispered, then the tears that had filled her eyes began to fall one by one.

"We'll find Randhir and we'll bring him back to his senses," Parth told her seriously. "Now please Sanyukta don't cry."

"N - No. He's probably h - happy. Maybe he found a girl who's prettier than me, who is more caring than me, who is a nicer girl than me... the kind of girl he likes," she sobbed.

Parth leaned forward and wiped the tears that had fallen from Sanyukta's eyes, shaking his head.

"Sanyukta, you know that this won't help you," he said to her. "You just got a really good job. You have to go there and show your skills. Go now or you'll be late."

She nodded, and let go of his hand.

"B - bye," she choked, and picked up her bag before running out of the door and bumping into her father.

"You'll do well," Kishore, her father, told her and engulfed her in a tight hug. "You'll do very well."

Sanyukta hugged him back tightly. How much she had wanted him to accept her love for engineering, her desire to have a career... and now when he had, she couldn't do it?

She disappointed herself more than anything.

"Thanks Papa," she told him.

He broke the hug and touched her head affectionately. Finally, she regained her composure and made her way to the door, heading to work... to her first day on the job.

"Randhir," his boss called out, and he glanced up from the machine he was working on.

"Yes sir?" he asked.

"There are two new employees coming in today. You will be in charge of training them," his boss informed.

"Okay sir," Randhir answered.

"You're doing a good job," his boss complimented and then turned around, walking away from him.

Randhir went back to finishing his machine, his boss's compliment having no effect on him. It was rare for something to touch him nowadays. Good or bad, it was like all emotion had left him.

He usually got to work at six in the morning and left the office after ten at night. All he did was work all day, then go home and sleep. The cycle repeated everyday.

Soon, he heard a chatter of the regular staff entering the office. Randhir's eyes were fixed on his machine. He had no interest in anything else.

As he continued to work on the machine, he felt something. It was like a presence. He looked up from his machine... something that he never did for anyone, unless they called out to him.

He heard three sets of footsteps approach him.

"Randhir, these are the employees you need to watch over," his boss said, and Randhir turned around to look at the two of them.

His eyes fell to the one person he thought he would never see again. Her eyes widened with shock and he just stared at her expressionlessly.

"Thank you sir, I'll take over from here," he told his boss, ignoring the rapid beating of his heart, the sweat that was forming on the palms of his hands, and the emotions that were taking over his body.

How could a past so painful come back to haunt you in a way that was almost pleasing?

Wow! a story on current plot I missed your fics here ...

Randhir is the incharge ..it will be interesting to read how he tries to ignore sanyukta, his feelings for her ...
