Apart from all the other reasons I have for thanking you for this FF, one important reason is that I always wanted some action scenes involving Abhiya and here I have my desire fulfilled by one of the greatest fan fiction writers I have come across.

Thank you very very very very much Shreya for this.

Coming to the update
So what is this town St.Halic - Is this a town occupied by vampires, mutants and not humans? If yes, wonder what do they do for living and food? I mean in the palace surrounded by the fort, you have the King, his counselors and chief of army for discussing all political affairs. And the surrounding places will be with normal household people engaged in various occupations. Is this the same for vampires also?

Yes. Quite similar to humans, except Mutants don't really occupy any place- they just go wherever they are ordered to go for whatever reason.

So finally Abhiya reached their current destination - Omnius.
And in this short journey, she came to know something more about mutants, though not everything. Hats off to you for giving attention to the minutest detail. Piya flaring up when the mutant mentioned Abhay's number instead of his name. She started to realise that there is something human (some kind of feeling and not just zombies) in the mutants and the mutants also sensing a different quality in the vampire princess.

Yeah. I planned a whole backstory for Mark, too.😳

Is this Queen Alizia - the queen mother of Piya? I dont remember reading her name before. I think her parents were always mentioned as "The King and the Queen". There is no doubt something brewing up in the City, but why is the Queen in need of a spy. Not that Queens should not be involved in such serious affairs. But when you have the King, it is he or both he and his Queen are to be involved. But we have only the Queen here? Is she acting as per the instructions of the King. Every one in the Palace must have known that the Princess has run away on some mission. Then the Queen does not seem to mention that as a priority task to the newly appointed strategist.

ah. Good to see that you recognized that minor detail. Later. 😆

And of all wonders, we have our Siddharth. Not that he is the same Siddharth of PKYEK. But the face and the character just fills in.

Piya fainted at some memory or in the excitement to get her memory back and Wow Abhay, in his panic called her Piya !!!!!. Its not just Piya's heart but mine too leaped at the sound. Now they take a barge to the Omnius. But aren't the barges to be guarded?
What must she have had in mind when she decided to sneak into the Omnius bypassing the security that she was shocked at the violence erupted to seek an entry. There you go again Shreya in bringing out a personality in a princess who had not seen much action and who fails to have even a simple plan forget a strategy to implement those actions (Or she may have forgotten). Believe me, I am not exaggerating but when I read your works, I get the same feeling I get when I read the works of reputed fiction authors.
Coming to the memory bank. Are they not secured by vampires? Or did these vampires also run to the security gate where the blast took place.

Yes. Piya has forgotten her old life and she is a different person now. And she left all the planning to Abhay😆 She is not good at fighting or strategy now.
The memory bank does not need guards. Because memories can only be accessed by one person, ie the person who has kept the memories. And the major effect of that blast was this intention only : to create a diversion.

Siddharth bit on a skewered lamb leg Do vampires eat?

Of course they do. Did you forget about Piya's breakfast? The one in which she tried to drug Abhay?😆

Siddharth is also a vampire like others. But why was he surprised at Abhay's description. This is how all the mutants were to be described. So what made him think that the description is not right. And how exactly did he know Abhay - as a human or were mutants behaving in a different way when they were turned? He knew him a human right. Did he turn him into a mutant? Did they share any past?

Yes Sid and Abhay have a past and therein lies the answer.

So coming to the commotion, who switched off the Diablos, the mutant head or the vampires in charge. The vampires were supposed to be incharge of the diablos, right.

Siddharth cut off the power. Isn't it obvious😆

So Siddharth knew that Abhay and the Princess were the intruders. The Spyders - Dont they crawl like the ones from Minority Report 😆. Just kidding. Why did he delete the footage of them. Whatever, he did not want them to get caught as he knew the consequences and did not desire those consequences on Abhay atleast. The Princess would not be harmed by the vampires incharge. They would leave her fate to the King and the Queen.

I must change that word. Spyders. Nope, they're your regular CCTVs

The next set of action events are simply fabulous that I just cant comment.
She seems to get back her memories of Vikrant and he both curious as well as concerned for her shares her memories. Then seeing her intimately with another man is not something he can endure. How much his heart would have twisted in agony to have to watch her in someones else arms. He could not tolerate her relationship which was a kind of soft, with Kabir then how could he with Vikrant. I can imagine his state of mind. Wanting to be a part of memories and resenting the idea, because he could not bring himself to watch all that. I can sense his pain.
Then Piya's expressions and body language changes to more of pain and torment and there he sees Piya in a totally different form and a dying Vikrant. Even before he could wonder what happened, he was shocked at Piya's state and tried to bring her to the present world. But she did not. She was still lost in the past, in the painful memory of losing Vikrant and desperately trying to find him and be with him. Abhay, helpless, dragged her along saying that they were going to Vikrant.
What followed between them was described very beautifully and really touching.
She still in the past seeking Vikrant and her attack on Abhay when she realised he was not taking her to Vikrant. He, already heartbroken at her loving someone else and now not being able to realize that she is still in that state of mind, felt betrayed. He felt betrayed not because he thought she attacked him or was almost going to turn him to the strategists. He felt more betrayed that she was in love with someone else. And the subsequent outbursts came out in a different way.
But his outbursts brought her into a shocking reality and she realised that they were almost caught and had to run.
But all too late before one strategist spotted them and fired at Abhay. She managed to save him and he came to senses too quickly and reacted by finding a way to escape. But that strategist had seen them both right. So he must know that the mutant 10121 is not dead. Will they use the diablo once again? I hope not.

Will they? They will certainly try I guess. But will it work?😉

They are on the run again and now looked like they are trapped. Did he fall into the trap of Siddharth. I really wish so.

why? you want sid to turn them over?😆

Piya is a vampire, so how come her ankle is twisted and even if it is, she should heal fast na.

I am eagerly waiting for the next update. But I fear if they were to be captured, then all might not go well. I really dont want Abhay to be tortured please...

Vampires don't have that ability here Harini. Mutants do. Which is why Piya is a healer. Abhay will be tortured. Just not physically.😉 Thank you so much for all the appreciation. I need it a lot if I want to publish this.😆

Quick recap : Abhay and Piya break into the Omnius and Piya gets her memories back. Inadvertently, she causes Abhay to be attacked. He almost gets shot but she manages to save him. Together, they try to escape the Strategists, but they fall down a hole.

Chapter 8 : A Love Lost

She held on to Abhay tightly as she fell through darkness with him, and she was conscious of his hand at the back of her head. He was still looking out for her.

And then her eyes were blinded by sunlight and they tumbled onto solid ground , rolling over and over. If Abhay had not shielded her head, she was pretty sure she'd have cracked it. As it was, when she got back her bearing, she realized that she was lying on her back, with Abhay on top, staring down at her. The sunlight was less here, but her skin was already burning.

Abhay rolled off her and got to his feet, helping her up. Quickly, he tied his cloak securely around her, then pulled up the hood. She sagged against him in relief. "Thank you," she murmured. "Are you all right?" He asked, his brow drawn in a frown. "Yes." Odd, she thought, how even speaking the simple word made her feel faint. Obviously, Abhay didn't believe her, because he immediately lifted her into his arms. "We'll have to keep moving," he muttered. "Tell me if you feel uncomfortable."

She burrowed her head into his chest, gratefully. Now she realized that she did feel incredibly light headed. The events of the night had taken a toll on her. She couldn't stop thinking about Vikrant, and how he had made her feel. She had been giddy around him, so much that looking back, she barely recognized her previous self. She couldn't imagine being in Kabir's arms, and she could only feel a faint revulsion as she tried to imagine what it might be like to kiss him. Which made her realize that she had been a fool to think that she loved Kabir. And that Abhay had been right to ask her if she really did love him. Had she deluded herself so badly?

She had been a fool. She'd mistaken care and friendship for something else. And then she felt horrified :she had led him on. She had led him to believe that in time she would have been freer with her embraces. She couldn't even imagine being with him the way she had been around Vikrant. She could even imagine kissing Abhay : she was ashamed to have put so much thought into it, to have wanted it, once.

Guilt swamped her. Kabir was a good man. He'd sought her out when no one else had. And because she'd stopped fighting, she had not been able to save him. She could have gone with him, could have-
And because of her wrong decisions, another man - an innocent man- had died. Not because she had loved him as she'd thought.

Sh remembered the day she had met the witch who had taught her the art of healing. Sasha. "Oh, poor child," she had told Piya within moments of meeting her, " 'Tis a terrible curse upon you, that he who should gain your heart, must pay dearly." Kabir had known.
When he had first started paying court to her, she had warned him. He hadn't taken it seriously. "Why do you set so much store by the words of a fortune teller?" She had never been able to tell him about Vikrant. Like she'd told Abhay. Why had she told him so easily?

" Piya?" Abhay's voice broke into her thoughts. "You should sleep."
He lowered her gently to the ground. She glanced around. "What's that?" She asked curiously. "I've never seen anything like that in Faye."
She chanced a look at him. "It's called a river."
A river? She'd heard of them. Large expanses of water, only flowing in one direction. Faye only had two large lakes- it had no rivers. She looked at the river , watching the foam break over the rocks. Then she looked back at Abhay. He was frowning as he stared at it. "Abhay," she said, doubt in her voice. "Where are we?"
He turned to her. "I don't know," he said, his voice toneless, but a note of worry and frustration crept into his voice. "Faye has no rivers."
"Neither does Ricardia," she informed him. "Nor Wanda, nor Daleid," she said, naming the countries neighbouring Faye. "Except...Lornea. The land of the witches. It's the only one which has a river in all of Neverland."
"Neverland?"
"Our world," she explained. "Don't you have a name for yours?"
"We have...a few," he acknowledged. "So either we are in Lornea ... or in my world..."

Silence followed his words.
"Your world?" She said in astonishment. He shrugged. "We have rivers. It could be Lornea too. We'll find out later. Right now, you need to sleep."

He arranged the cloak around her. To his surprise, she nestled up to him. "You won't leave me?"
"No," he said, fighting the urge to pull her closer. "I'm here."
She closed her eyes, but he knew it was a long time before she slept. He hadn't told her, but a surge of hope welled up in him at the slim chance that they'd somehow entered the human world. It was selfish, because Piya would have a bewildering time, in a world she barely knew, but he could be home... and here, she was safe. He stroked her hair softly, wishing he knew for sure. At any rate, they were out of Faye...and that itself was encouraging.

When Piya awoke, she was slightly disoriented until she remembered everything. She shot up, glancing at Abhay. Her throat ached slightly, so she cleared it. She thought she might have imagined the quirk of his lips, because he looked as deadpan as ever.
The forest was dark, so she knew it was night. "How long did I sleep?" She asked. He shrugged. "About a day and a half. Are you thirsty? "

A day and a half! He must be joking, yet looking at his face, she doubted he knew how to. "That long?" She said incredulously. "And you didn't move me from your lap?" Now he looked uncomfortable. "It was no trouble," he said. "And it was a rest you needed." She looked at his handsome face, wishing she could talk to him as easily as she had when she hadn't known him. Now, however...so much had changed. She lowered her eyes and looked away.
"Anything you need?" He asked softly. "Are you thirsty?" She gave a rueful smile. "We didn't get any supplies." He looked confused. "I know that. But you could always take from me."

She had a sudden flash of his fangs on her neck and she shuddered, then tried to smile at him. "No need. I'm not thirsty."
Abhay had seen the shudder. Why had she hesitated? What was going on? By all rights she ought to be thirsty.

What does it matter? A voice inside rebuked him. It hurts you so badly, weakens you, yet you want her to take your blood even though she doesn't need to?
"We should keep moving," he said abruptly. Piya, who had been gazing off into space pensively, started. "That is," he amended, "If you're not tired. We need to find out where we are." "I'm not tired," Piya replied. "I was just thinking... I wish I could get clean. I feel filthy." She gave him an embarrased smile. He must think her a pampered princess. To her surprise, he was frowning as he considered the idea. "There is a river here. It would probably be cold, but if you could brave it..."

Oh, he was a masochistic jerk, he thought. Why couldn't he just keep his mouth shut? Now his imagination was going into overdrive thinking about her bathing. She turned to him, her eyes lighting up. "Thanks, Abhay. That's that's a great suggestion." And then her smile faded. "You'll have to turn away till I finish."
" Of course," he replied, his voice hoarse.

He turned away as she walked closer to the river and began shedding his clothes. True to his word, he did not look. She tested the water with one foot, finding it cool, but not overly so. But the water...
What was suddenly making her nervous was that the water was flowing rather swiftly. She didn't know why, she just did.

You've come this far, she chided herself. It's foolish to turn back now. Gingerly, she stepped into the water.
The cold water was a shock to her system, and she yelped out. Abhay whipped around. "Piya!" He was in front of her within moments, wading through to her.

Piya had never been so grateful for her long hair that covered most of her exposed upper body. Mortification filled her, making her flush scarlet. "What are you doing?" She gasped, dipping lower into the water. " You said you wouldn't look! Couldn't you wait till I finished? Get out, get out!"
To his credit , Abhay did manage to look embarrassed and contrite before his face fell back into his usual mask. He averted his eyes hastily and waded out. "I apologize," he said, sounding stiff. "I thought you were in danger." And just like that her anger was replaced by guilt. "It's fine," she called out softly. "I'll make sure to call your name if anything happens." There was no reply from him.

She washed herself as quickly as possible and waded out, using her cloak to dry herself and donned her clothes. "You can look now," she said politely. "Do you want to bathe, too?"
"No," said Abhay in a strangled voice. "Let' s start moving."

Sainthood. That was what he deserved, for being able to control his reaction to her. For not even looking.
God, but she was beautiful. He'd barely seen past her hair, but it didn't seem to make a difference in making him want her any less.
"You're a dishonourable cad," he told himself. "She's been so through so much and she's still in love with someone else. And you are supposed to be her friend." How could he even think of her? She was a different species. He was her slave in every meaning. And she belonged to someone else. The most he could hope to be was a confidant. And that itself was enough. He didn't deserve any more.

Piya walked with him in silence. The burning in her throat had increased slightly, but it wasn't terribly uncomfortable... yet. She had gone for a week without blood in that battle. She could hold it out for now. That battle. She couldn't stop thinking of it. Thinking of the other options she should have taken. Thinking of Vikrant, and his smile, and how he made her feel, like she was floating on something around him. She couldn't imagine it now. She was ashamed that she'd mistaken friendship for love. Now that she knew what it was like, she knew she wouldn't make that mistake again. And she wouldn't fall in love again either. No way would she let that happen.

She almost snorted aloud at the thought. She hadn't found love in in decades. Six decades. And now she was on the run. The chances of her finding love was nil. She stumbled upon a log and would have fallen if Abhay hadn't caught her. Without a word, he righted her, ignoring the blush on her face. She wanted to thank him, but he had already turned away. She caught herself observing the side of his face, the tilt of his head. Why was she attracted to him? When he had shown no interest in her whatsoever?

It was the eyes, she decided. His eyes were a lot like Vikrant. It was her mind's way of trying to be closer to the man she still loved. The thought gave her comfort. She was not a lightskirt after all; it was still Vikrant whom she loved.

Abhay had no idea how to get out of the forest. He wished he knew whether they were after all just moving in circles. There was not much wildlife, so he figured they ought to be close to the borders. All he saw was the occasional rabbit, fox or snake.

She walked on in silence beside him.Abhay caught himself several times from asking her what she was thinking about. She didn't even say anything about resting, even when the sun began to rise. Neither did she ask for blood. He wanted her to talk to him.
When the sun had risen well into the sky, he stopped. The foliage prevented her for getting any burns, but the places where it peeked out would cause her discomfort. She kept on walking however, seeming not to notice that he had stopped. "Piya!"

She stopped dead at the sound of his voice and turned around. He was a little way behind her, looking worried. She walked back to him. "Sorry. I-are we stopping?" He frowned, then said, "Yes. You need rest. And blood-"
"I told you I don't need blood," she snapped. "When will you understand?" When his eyes lowered, she felt guilty again. "But you're right. I need to rest."

She lowered herself down on the cool ground. After a beat, he sat down next to her. "Do you want to talk about Vikrant?" Her surprised eyes flew to his. "Vik...Vikrant?" She stammered. "What..." he shrugged. "Maybe you could tell me about him. He must have been a fine man." She bit her lip as she stared at him. Wrong move. His eyes were capable of drawing out everything from her, and she was allowing herself to be drawn into the safety she felt around him. Without planning it, without gathering her thoughts, she began to speak.

"He was a wonderful person. He was kind to everyone, and so much fun to be with. He could light up a room just by being in it."
She moved closer to Abhay almost unconsciously. "We were sparring partners. He was the only one who'd make me work for it; everyone else let me win easily. He said... the first time we fought, he bested me, and then he said that someone with a face as beautiful as mine should definitely find it easy to bring men to their knees, and it was merely a lucky chance that he found himself winning, which meant that I must have found him slightly alluring after all. Women vied for him; so I naturally called him flirtatious. He dared me to find him a woman who he'd flirted with." She paused, a soft smile lighting up her face.

"Vikrant was extremely sociable, so I took him up on it, but the truth was that he was simply friendly with all the women, yet he never gave a hint of anything more. I was forced to conclude he was right." She looked at him. "Do you know, Vikrant beat me again and again, till I got better than him and managed to beat him. And then he said that I cheated by smiling. It was a silly thing to say, completely ridiculous, and we both knew it, but men are seldom so unaffected by victory or defeat. I think I fell in love with him that day..."

"He officially asked me during the Annual Ball. I accepted,I could not dream of saying otherwise. He made me so happy, he kept me so happy, Abhay...he could have chosen better, but he wanted me." Abhay shook his head. If he'd been in Vikrant's place he would have felt honored that she'd chosen him. "But you know," she continued, "Vikrant insisted it was he who was the lucky one. " And Abhay found himself hating him.

She went on talking, telling him about Vikrant.
Vikrant's habits. His ideals- "He treated everyone the same, regardless of their status-", the ways he used to make her laugh. "And then there was that war," she finished. "We were taken in. I made some stupid decisions, and we lost many people. Vikrant, too. And then-"

She cleared her throat, and continued speaking, but Abhay had seen the sorrow veil the enthusiasm in her eyes. "Anyway, so I gave up all my memories of him, of how to fight. I never wanted ... I never wanted anything more to do with it. And so..."
She trailed off, picking at the hem of her shirt.

Abhay forced down the sandpaper apparently stuck in his throat. He'd wanted to dislike Vikrant like Kabir, but it sucked that he couldn't manage it. The man reminded him of ...well, himself. In parts. But he could never be that person now. Never again.

"I'm sorry," said Piya. "Did I upset you?" His head shot up. She was looking concerned. For him. The irony was not lost on him. "No, Princess, and it is I who should have asked you that question, given how much more you are upset. No , you are more than upset, you are mourning. I did not wish to reopen old wounds. I apologize." She smiled sadly. "Do not. You were my friend, once. Can we not be friends again? Besides, you are feeling sad for someone else's pain. You deserve my apology. Thank you for listening."
Once again, the irony was not lost on him. "Did Vikrant have no faults?" He asked. It was a challenge keeping the resentment out of his voice, but he managed it. She smiled. "So many. He was a terribly fussy eater. And when he was angry, he used his sarcasm freely to inflict pain. He never forgot grudges. And he often said less than what he felt."

They were not his faults, and Abhay was relieved. But the pain increased, with the obvious fondness in her voice as she spoke of his faults. She knew his flaws, and she had loved him in spite of them. She took a deep breath. "Do you know something, Abhay? I feel safe in this place. Whatever this place is...it feels nice. And safe." He wanted to agree, but he couldn't let his guard down. Not yet.

"Perhaps you should rest, Piya," said Abhay non commitally. "It's been a long day, and you must be tired. And you must be thirs-"
"Finish that word, and I will smack you," Piya snapped. Every time he alluded to her thirst, the burning in her throat seemed to multiply manifold. "Sorry," she added, seeing him lower his gaze. "I didn't mean to snap at you... you know, you're right. I am tired."
Sleep would temper her raging thirst.
She moved closer to him. In other circumstances, she would have guilty for revelling in the warmth of his body, but right now, she was too tired to care.

In the evening, when she woke up, they started walking again. "We're close," said Abhay. "The forest is thinning out. We might get there in a short while."
"Really?" she said, dizzy with relief. Finally. Finally she could get a drink.

"Yes," said Abhay. "Really."
She smiled. "Great."
They walked on, for a while, until Abhay stopped. "Piya," he said, touching her arm lightly, "I... I think I need to go and scout out... to see where we are... I don't want you in danger. Could you stay here...or...if you want to come with me?"
She looked up, knowing he was giving her a choice and respecting him for it.
"I'll stay here," she said. "Come soon."
He looked torn. "Are you sure?"
She smiled now. "Yes. Go."

She watched him off, swallowing. The burning in her throat intensified. She tried recounting the names of all the herbs she knew. She finished, and Abhay had not yet returned. She closed her eyes, trying to stop the burning.

A crash in the undergrowth near her.and Piya stood up in alarm. "Abhay?" she called, rushing to the source of the noise.
A young male lay fallen on the ground. His eyes widened in wonder as he looked at her. "Are you... are you a fairy?"

But Piya couldn't think. She was staring at the cuts on his arms and hand. Blood oozed freely, fanning her thirst . She was in a red haze. And finally, she gave in to her need.

Karan Gupta screamed in horror and pain as Piya's fangs pierced his neck.
