In Islam, a husband has to say talaq three times, which is of course total divorce and the couple can't become together unless the ex wife marries someone else and gets divorce from that relationship and then the wife and ex husband can get remarried.

When the husband says talaq once, than they have to wait 40 days and if the husband says twice, there is more waiting period
