I've been vocal against Gul many times but I cannot question her freedom of expression.
Ofc Indian TV should become more progressive. Never denied it. And I hope more more often than not that Gul should start doing that.
But she does what sells. The audience should stop watching yet here we all are. Double standards. If we demand quality product by turning of our TV sets, PHs will deliver.
For a progressive show we need a progressive audience.
Because at the end of the day it's about what makes the money.
I get where your coming from. And I understand that with the power that media has, responsibility follows. It sounds great. Perhaps they can exercise caution but then again why should one have to exercise caution when is comes to creativity? It's not that I think Gul is creating a magnificent story or is a very talent writer. Her stories are mediocre. But she still shouldn't have to show something that isn't a part of her story. Hers is still a subtle story, there are so many movies and shows of various languages and parts of the world that should exercise caution, but they don't because that would be compromising with their story.
I wish she used her medium to show a progressive story, and honestly there is so much potential for character development which she ignores and I hate it. But it's getting her the ratings she desires. Like Rockerchic said, as an audience we continue to watch the show for whatever reason. Why would the writers change something that is working?
If she wanted to make Pratigya, or Diya aur Baati then that is how she would have conceptualized her show. Perhaps that is not her vision. Those shows came with the agenda to spread a message about woman's rights. That is not the goal of this show. EHMMBH came with the goal to make the men very good husbands. Gul's idea behind her men is to create very flawed men. We can not ask her to show anything other what her vision is because then it would no longer be her vision. I wish she had shown some progress in her characters by now, but again it's her story and she has the right to tell it. I can only control what I watch. And call it my character flaw but I find Diya aur Baati to be very boring whereas reading QH updates is a part of my daily routine. Gul found her audience and that is who she is catering too.
It's funny when you think about it...they are afraid of showing sex scenes but seemed to not have no issue showing a man slapping a woman.
Great topic, it's nice to be able to discuss out views in a healthy manner. I really enjoy reading everyone's views and everytime a read a new comment I find myself reevaluating my own opinions.
