On a subtle level we all are... it's a collective reaction (like someone mentioned before). It may not affect you or me or anyone else individually but on the whole it definitely does. It is not uncommon to see things that are shown on tv, happening in the neighborhood. And although we may think it's wrong, we still accept it because its on tv. There are so many dowry cases, so many domestic violence cases, so so many... be it the east or the west, it's everywhere. every. where.

And when it does come to kids, you may wish to control them... but the more they feel controlled, the more they rebel. If you don't allow them to do things in front of you, they do it behind your back. Most parents never wish ill for their kids, but even then some kids go on to doing things like drugs etc. How are the parents to be blamed then? And after all, these kids have the freedom of expression too... by using and doing all that they may. And some day, these kids will be adults who are responsible for their own decisions - are you still going to be able to control them? Like I said, the message effects everyone receiving it - in a good or bad way.

And I don't advocate any actions like drugs or etc... just like I won't advocate what Gul shows in her shows. Every single person has a moral responsibility whether they like it or not. And my only problem with Gul is that... She has such a beautiful story line, with so much potential, so much following, and such wonderful actors... and she is so influential, then why isn't she using her power to bring about a change, for the better? Why not support a progressive thinking society? And with all the stuff they are showing now, it doesn't only demean women but also ruins the story line which has a really good potential.

There is a subtle difference between controlling and teaching right and wrong. Let's not go into parenting.

I've been vocal against Gul many times but I cannot question her freedom of expression.

Ofc Indian TV should become more progressive. Never denied it. And I hope more more often than not that Gul should start doing that.

But she does what sells. The audience should stop watching yet here we all are. Double standards. If we demand quality product by turning of our TV sets, PHs will deliver.

For a progressive show we need a progressive audience.

Because at the end of the day it's about what makes the money.

Great post Sanaa!

Ms Khan has always maintained that all her stories have been inspired by Mills and boons...she is extremely passionate about such stories. This is her way of thinking and her way of expressing in her work. I believe in Freedom of Speech ...and it's important that every citizen in every part of the world has it. Now saying that I also believe that it's very important that the individual uses it to benefit the society.

I don't have an idea which audience she is catering to in India...whether its urban or small town or city women...at this point it doesn't matter because women because I think that she is not helping the society at all in showing such regressive behavior from a male lead...I am always voiced my opinion about the way her PH has time and again glorified domestic abuse in all forms in the name of love and passion. It's extremely sickening to watch abuse in this form inflicted on women I every possible way...but we cannot deny the fact that people are watching it. As long as audiences don't take a stand and reject such material they are going to produce them.

We are a minority who watches QH in the Internet throughout the world...we don't even play a role in the trps. What really needs to be done is to educate and create an awareness about women rights in masses of women. They need to realize that a woman has rights too...a husband or a fiance or a liver does not have the right to abuse them physically or mentally...self respect and dignity is above than any kind of love in the disguise of abuse...and mostly importantly women has to be financially independent.

The producers and makers will always target the audiences who are weak and gullible.

I guess it is about what makes money at the end of the day. And why is it making money? Because she's got two brilliant actors who portray emotions and feelings really well as lead actors. They make an amazing on screen couple. They are the only reason I'm putting up with the show in all honesty. That said.. I missed the last few episodes and only read the written updates with hope of some decent apology from Asad's side. Down the drain! Back to my point, her simple formula is 'get good looking actors.. create chemistry'..my question.. why not get the same actors and create the same chemistry but show a progressive storyline? Why show the girl putting up with a domineering, self satisfied jerks in the name of 'love'? TRPS.. money.. well here's a thought

Diya aur Baati Hum is/was doing really well! And as far as I know.. they've portrayed women really well. They've gone one step further to show how an educated woman gets married to an uneducated man (while many a times it's the opposite way round). That and Pratigya. I mean.. with her direction skills she could easily make a story like that even better. When I watched bits and pieces of EHMMBH.. I never found myself disgusted at any male character. But while watching QH.. I find myself wondering why Zoya doesn't wring Asad's neck! Asad being KSG.. and I adore this guy and his acting!

She could easily make more money that way without tarnishing the whole meaning of love..

I get where your coming from. And I understand that with the power that media has, responsibility follows. It sounds great. Perhaps they can exercise caution but then again why should one have to exercise caution when is comes to creativity? It's not that I think Gul is creating a magnificent story or is a very talent writer. Her stories are mediocre. But she still shouldn't have to show something that isn't a part of her story. Hers is still a subtle story, there are so many movies and shows of various languages and parts of the world that should exercise caution, but they don't because that would be compromising with their story.

I wish she used her medium to show a progressive story, and honestly there is so much potential for character development which she ignores and I hate it. But it's getting her the ratings she desires. Like Rockerchic said, as an audience we continue to watch the show for whatever reason. Why would the writers change something that is working?

If she wanted to make Pratigya, or Diya aur Baati then that is how she would have conceptualized her show. Perhaps that is not her vision. Those shows came with the agenda to spread a message about woman's rights. That is not the goal of this show. EHMMBH came with the goal to make the men very good husbands. Gul's idea behind her men is to create very flawed men. We can not ask her to show anything other what her vision is because then it would no longer be her vision. I wish she had shown some progress in her characters by now, but again it's her story and she has the right to tell it. I can only control what I watch. And call it my character flaw but I find Diya aur Baati to be very boring whereas reading QH updates is a part of my daily routine. Gul found her audience and that is who she is catering too.

It's funny when you think about it...they are afraid of showing sex scenes but seemed to not have no issue showing a man slapping a woman.

Great topic, it's nice to be able to discuss out views in a healthy manner. I really enjoy reading everyone's views and everytime a read a new comment I find myself reevaluating my own opinions.

That's what people said about Geet and IPK and now QH.

At some point we have to realise the only common thing between these three things is Gul Khan who's often never given credit and her actors are shown the full lime light. She makes her actors look good. She takes actors who you think can never do these types of roles and makes them into stars. Let it be Sanaya, or Barun or KSG or Surbhi.

Gul sells.

Her Mills and Boon sells. Her actors sell only because they play her characters.

I'm saying if QH starts dipping in the TRPs, Gul will know that people are not buying her bulls*. Let the TRPs dip, let people turn of the TV... But people are clearly loving her regressive show if the TRPs are anything to go by.

#1 on Zee, the second best show in all of TV, #1 on IF

People are buying bulls*.

Why should she change when everything is going her way? She's in her comfort zone.

Sad truth.

Absolutely agreed!
A standing ovation to the TM for this post!!
I have often worried about the amount of violence (both physical and mental) against women in Gul Khan's shows be it Geet,IPK or QH. Whatever ppl might say abt TV shows existing only for entertainment, the truth that media has the power to create reality and influence impressionable minds cant be ignored. Gul Khan stop this violence!

We know what she's creating is selling. We know she's got a massive audience as I mentioned in my post. But with this, all I'm trying to get across, is shouldn't she be a bit more careful about the effect it could have on people? Just because ..I don't know.. drugs sell.. doesn't mean we should go around and not say a word to today's youth who have it.

Oh.. wow.. can't believe I'm talking like that when I'm not even 20 myself!!

There's a reason drugs are condemned, and I agree, this example is very extreme when compared to TV industry.. but works along the same lines in a sense doesn't it.

Also, on cigarette packets there's a note at the bottom which says they're dangerous for your health. Maybe (as someone mentioned before) they should have a disclaimer before the start of the show 'The hero in this show is a complete jerk. Watch at your own risk'..!! 😆
